to dislike the easy name changing on Mn?

Call me old fashioned, but I sort of like getting to know, in the very loosest sense, the people that I spend time with fairly regularly (ie. you lot).

I sometimes think that the dreaded Mumsnet Royalty (sorry for using that hateful phrase which is always but always used as an attack, goady, personal or otherwise) are just people who don't name change and so more or less everyone knows who they are.

I can understand name changing for the personal stuff, of course I can and do it myself, but why do people permanently name change every few weeks or months? Don't you ever think "I wish I wasn't anonymous and that someone else on MN felt a bit of human connection with me"?

Just curious.

I have named changed once due to a horrible nasty experience I can't talk about as it makes me cry in to my wine which is pants because my tears dilute the alcohol Grin

MuffCakes · 27/11/2013 20:44

I've changed 3 times in 2 and a half years.

I changed because I gave to much of myself away on one of the other names and I felt as people knew so much about me and could bring up other stuff not even to do with the thread I started iykwim.

The other nc was just because I didn't like the name I was rarely using and didn't feel it fitted me. This one does but again I have said a few to many personal things.

azzbiscuit · 27/11/2013 20:45

The internet is full of freaks, on another forum I received threats against my family so I'd rather be as anonymous as possible.

DustyBaubles · 27/11/2013 20:45

I name change fairly often, because I have a habit of leaving my page open, so my screen name is easy enough to find.

I also have an alarming tendency to over share.

At the same time though, I'm not particularly hush hush about it, I'd say I'm easily traceable on here, if anyone was bothered enough to try.

I have no desire at all to establish a rapport with random online bods, though.

pianodoodle · 27/11/2013 20:47

I haven't name changed at all yet but I don't post any very personal questions.

I might actually trawl through my old posts though and see if the possibility is there to piece together enough about me from snippets to build a picture that could identify me.

I've no doubt someone who knows me in RL could work it out but I wouldn't want a stranger being able to do any detective work just in case I accidentally piss someone off some day Grin

Maybe that's why some people name change often?

AndHarry · 27/11/2013 20:49

Yes, you properly confused me when you stopped being BBH.

The only bit I don't like is when everyone seems to know who a poster used to be and I don't have a clue. It makes me feel left out :(

Mim78 · 27/11/2013 20:49

I think it's good you can name change.

Littlemissexpecting · 27/11/2013 20:51

I need to name change as I'm no longer expecting....

Some people probably have a very identifiable writing style so even if they do name change they'll get spotted anyway!

Amrapaali · 27/11/2013 20:51

I would like to name change but I quite like the one I have now....

MPB · 27/11/2013 20:52

I've just name changed after outing myself. FFS I bet she's sifting through my 500+ posts and getting some juicy goss!

My fault for thinking I wouldn't know her, we were comparing where we lived as live in same town. Looked at one of her posts and she's a mate of a mate and we were at the same kids party at the weekend!

What a twonk I am!

somedayillbesaturdaynite · 27/11/2013 20:53

i changed often when on the run from dv xp..

thebody · 27/11/2013 20:54

like everlong I have never name changed and I am probably identifiable but not really that bothered to be honest.

thebody · 27/11/2013 20:56

oh op can understand though if people want to change so it should be easy.

I like seeing familiar posters though. it's nice.

Catmint · 27/11/2013 20:56

I'm lucky enough to have quite a stable life. I am proud of who I am and am open about my frailties. And I like my name, so I don't change it. Well once, but the people I talk to knew it was me.

CuntyBunty · 27/11/2013 20:56

I agree, but there are some right "advance search wankers", as I like to call them on here, so I do name change, for the most harmless of reasons. Also, I like to keep a low profile overall. I am not on Facebook or Twitter and if asked on here, I would tell anyone what my previous NNs were, but I do like to think of myself as an "Internet Ninja".

MistAllChuckingFrighty · 27/11/2013 20:58

I had never name changed until circumstances beyond my control made it impossible to stay on MN and keep the same name

EvilRingahBitch · 27/11/2013 20:58

I was the same name for years, never royalty or anything like it, but I felt that people sort of knew who I was and recognised the name. Then I got into an acrimonious discussion and just felt I'd left too large a footprint on the web, and ever since then I've discarded names on a monthly basis. I do think I've lost something, because I don't get the same responses I used to, but in the light of Penisbeakergate I think the increased privacy is worth it.

OrlandoWoolf · 27/11/2013 20:58

I've name changed recently - I was posting too much personal stuff and was a bit disturbed by the recent troll influx.

My absence has not been noticed though Sad

CuntyBunty · 27/11/2013 20:59

It is nice to see the familiar posters on here The Body. I am not contributing to that feeling by name changing every few months. I kind of feel bad about it now.

OrlandoWoolf · 27/11/2013 20:59

But I was well known before and liked being known.

Sparklingbrook · 27/11/2013 21:00

I don't name change. I like to be me IYKWIM. Like thebody I like seeing familiar posters too.

There's nothing I post that I would care who saw, and I don't flatter myself to think anyone would want to look me up on here.

I name changed for 20 minutes for a laugh-I didn't like it.

Mintyy · 27/11/2013 21:00

Orlando - whoever you are - I could tell you woz an oldie. Pm me.

WorraLiberty · 27/11/2013 21:04

I've never name changed (apart from a Christmas variation) but I probably would if I posted about personal stuff.

It's ironic really because I think people get better advice when the person giving it, knows a little bit about them and their personality...but you can't blame them for changing for privacy reasons.

What I can't stand is when people nc for silly reasons, such as people might disagree with them...or just to stir up trouble.
