To buy my wedding dress off eBay?

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:07

Hi

I'm getting married next August in a shoe string and have seen many dresses from china that are very cheap.

I've been recommended one seller who is cheap but doesn't have the dress style I really want Sad

I've seen the style I love on eBay by a few sellers and don't know whether to trust them or not?

The dress is only £50 so would you risk it for a biscuit?

Or do any of you lovely ladies have any recommendations wrt the Chinese sellers on eBay? Smile

I would be so nervous because you can't 'see' them. Have you tried any charity shops?

HelloDoris · 27/11/2013 17:12

I bought my dress from Jjs House a Chinese supplier. Can't do links as I'm rubbish, but google their website. Remember to factor in customs charges, I paid £25 extra on top of the dress charge and delivery. Mine came in at £168, and was well worth it!

I have to admit I was really nervous about buying but my dress is GORGEOUS, it has a couple of teeny tiny faults but only things a bride would notice.

If you have any questions please shout!

momb · 27/11/2013 17:12

If it's a stock dress for £50 then go for it. If it's a custom-size for that price I'd be dubious.

Will this work??

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:16

I've read the feedback on eBay but the cynic in me doesn't trust it 100% Hmm

My lovely mother-in-law to be has insisted she buys my dress and I do have a back up one that I had picked before realising I could get this style cheaply (it's a copy of a designer one that costs what my entire budget is Shock)

So I'm so happy I've seen it but scared Confused hence my dilemma.

My back up dress is only £100 and MIL to be is happy with this amount

Hellodorris- that's where my back up dress is from!! My MIL brought hers off there and was stunning but unfortunitly they don't do that style Sad

I done it, made to measure for £120 but did need tweaking a friend is a dress maker so she done the alterations for me so you might want to factor that in.

The way I saw it was ok, I might lose £120 buy i stand to save a lot!

Newlywed2013 · 27/11/2013 17:19

Rather than eBay! Try light in the box got my dresses
From there! You will have to pay a couple of quid in import tax but so worth it! Seen too many people get terribly made gowns on eBay!

chirpchirp · 27/11/2013 17:19

If you go for it you should be prepared to probably have to spend the same again or possibly more to have it altered.

There are a few high street retailers who do affordable bridal wear, I got mine from Monsoon, £125, couldn't have been happier with it. Think BHS also have a decent range.

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:20

You can buy either stock or made to measure. I'll see if I can do a link to the dress. I understand the taste may not be for everyone but I just fell in love lol

I bought a separate corset from a corset seller on the internet and a separate ballroom skirt from anither seller. Came up to 70 pounds in price and looked fab. With a corset you can get an exact fit and a ballroom skirt is cheap and easily made to fit exactly with an extra stitch or two on the waistband which won't show undet the corset anyway. Both can be bought from uk sellers and can be returned if not right. I'm amazed more people don't do this, tbh. You can also have different coloured top and bottom (I had a pale blue corset and a cream skirt).

ThePinkOcelot · 27/11/2013 17:24

I bought my dress off eBay. It wasn't from a Chinese seller though. I have heard some people who have been really pleased and others not so much. Good luck an congratulations

I got my dress from monsoon. My cousin worked there so got 50% off. It came to £200 but I will have to pay for this to be altered and dry cleaned.
My friend found someone on Facebook who will make the dress she wants for £190.
Bit more than you wanted but I think FB groups or eBay are best.

TarkaTheOtter · 27/11/2013 17:25

I know someone who got a terrible quality dress from China. The skirt was made of two pieces of fabric and sewn together unevenly with a seam at the knee. It was also very, very delayed so she wasn't left a lot of time to sort it out. Only worth it if very cheap and you have a (quick to implement) plan B.

exaltedwombat · 27/11/2013 17:25

I love "risk it for a biscuit"! Is it a family saying?

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:26

Brilliant ideas ladies Grin thank you and am researching them all. Thank you for your congrats too Smile

What's your budget and what style are you after? You may be better off getting a second hand dress from eBay. Then you can try on the make and style in a dress shop.

lborolass · 27/11/2013 17:28

I don't think there's anything wrong with buying from ebay.

Doesn't everyone say "risk it for a biscuit"? Grin

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:28

Yes lol we say it all the time Smile

Brilliant FB idea. My link didn't work, I am useless lol

Fairy Gothmother on the internet do fantastic corsets (don't be put off by the name!).

HairyBeaver · 27/11/2013 17:30

Around £130 but can go up to £200 as if I see something around £200 I'd give MIL the extra, as she hasn't stated a limit but hers cost that so don't expect her to pay more then that and would be happy to pay the extra Smile

ToysRLuv · 27/11/2013 17:38

Looking at the prices now, it must have been something like 200 pounds I spent, even if the skirt was end of line and dirt cheap.. Oh, well.. Still really fantastic value IMO.

Newlywed2013 · 27/11/2013 17:43

Also try preloved
