To think that just because you're posting from your phone

It doesn't mean that you can't proof-read before pressing 'send'?

It's not so much that I want to be part of the 'grammar police', or that I'm an official Pedant (well, maybe). It's that I can't understand what some of you are actually saying!

Do you have to agree with the spell-checker? Are you not allowed to use punctuation and capital letters?

If you don't use full stops I have no idea where one sentence ends and the next one begins and it makes it really hard to understand what you're getting at. Add to that, words that don't make any sense and I lose the will to live (and read).

So, I know you will say - Well don't read it then. Move along to the next post. Which obviously I can (and often) do. But surely the point of spending time composing a post is for others to read?

BTW, this is not aimed at posters who write in obvious haste and distress. This is aimed at the others, who could surely spare a moment to make their posts coherent?

I agree. I often get pulled up when I reply sometimes because I have taken something one way when reading it. When actually if proper grammar was used I would have understood.

misspontypine · 17/11/2013 10:06

My phone is strange, it doesn't let me scroll up to see what I have written, it think it's because the screen is chipped.

My posts tend to be easier to read when I post on my phone because of predictive spelling.

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 17/11/2013 10:08

I use my phone. I wont use preview as I still wouldn't notice any mistakes. I correct mistakes if I notice them when I return. Its no big deal.

My phone does tend to change innocent words into swear words though. I blame MN for that

ConfusedPixie · 17/11/2013 10:10

Yes and no. My new phone is like missponty's. I can't scroll up through what I've written and can only see one or two sentences. However I try my best to read it as a type and it's not always an issue, but if I'm trying to get a response out quickly or I'm tired I don't notice it.

Though I do use full sentences and paragraphs when on the phone, and correct spelling. Just sometimes the phone changes words even after I've looked and checked it Hmm

Hear hear!

Birdsgottafly · 17/11/2013 10:16

I don't preview and my phone does some strange auto corrects.

Threads move on so quickly, if everyone previewed then it would be a nightmare, as we would all have to go back to the point of the thread, which their post was relevant.

MN isn't a writing exercise, our brains are set up to interpret passages of writing, even with words missing.

I appreciate that for people with SN or Englishh not as their first language it might be difficult to follow, but everyone else should be able to read incorrectly written/punctuated posts.

Birdsgottafly · 17/11/2013 10:17

I checked English, but my phone decided it needed another "h" Confused.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 17/11/2013 10:17

It's because the stupid viewing window only lets you see one line at a time. Hard for consistency and continuity.

But you can still use punctuation and do proper links if you pay attention.

It is a total faff posting from your phone. The keyboard is tiny, it's hard to put in the punctuation because you've got to switch keyboard views. It's difficult to move back a few sentences if you realise you missed out a comma or something. Grin

I haven't come across a post on here that was so badly spelled that I couldn't understand what the word was meant to be.

Sometimes I misunderstand because I'm a bit dim. Grin or I even read something that doesn't even appear in the OP [boggle] what's THAT about? Hmm but spelling, grammar... they'd have to be going some before it became indecipherable. Maybe mashing the keypad with their head or something Grin

winklewoman · 17/11/2013 10:38

Revels, on that recent very long, three part thread which has been removed, one poster was virtually incomprehensible. She cannot even have attempted to proof read.

Ubik1 · 17/11/2013 10:39

Oh guck iff op

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/11/2013 10:41

My phone doesn't let me scroll back either. And you can only see one or two lines of text at a time.

ScrambledSmegs · 17/11/2013 10:43

Mine won't let me scroll up. It hates me Sad

RevelsRoulette · 17/11/2013 10:44

I missed something AGAIN, didn't I?

NoComet · 17/11/2013 10:49

scroll on an iPhone is shit, no sodding arrow keys.
Checking long posts is a pain.

But, that's nothing to the horrific, crazy, throw it across the room auto correct on this fucking stupid bossy self opinionated Kindle fire Angry

RevelsRoulette · 17/11/2013 10:50

Confused why have posts been deleted?

WorraLiberty · 17/11/2013 10:51

yanbu when i log on to facebook some of the posts are like this with absolutely no punctuation whatsoever and i dont know where one sentence starts and another one begins therefore the posts are really hard to read and it does my head in.

Nanny0gg · 17/11/2013 11:19

What did I say???

OP posts:
SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 17/11/2013 11:22

Why are there deletions?

RevelsRoulette · 17/11/2013 11:22

I dunno. What DID you say? [baffled]

thebody · 17/11/2013 11:25

how can this thread have got so vicious to warrant deletions?

my phone has a mind of its own and often sends before I have pressed send! very annoying.
