It doesn't mean that you can't proof-read before pressing 'send'?

It's not so much that I want to be part of the 'grammar police', or that I'm an official Pedant (well, maybe). It's that I can't understand what some of you are actually saying!

Do you have to agree with the spell-checker? Are you not allowed to use punctuation and capital letters?

If you don't use full stops I have no idea where one sentence ends and the next one begins and it makes it really hard to understand what you're getting at. Add to that, words that don't make any sense and I lose the will to live (and read).

So, I know you will say - Well don't read it then. Move along to the next post. Which obviously I can (and often) do. But surely the point of spending time composing a post is for others to read?

BTW, this is not aimed at posters who write in obvious haste and distress. This is aimed at the others, who could surely spare a moment to make their posts coherent?

My phone won't let me scroll up more than a line or two.

It's bloody annoying

I had one phone that wouldn't even let me see what I typed as I typed it ( that one went back...)

AuditAngel · 17/11/2013 11:32

I don't post on my phone, but half the time the iPad keyboard misses key strokes. Other times the predictive text thinks differently to me.

I also sometimes forget to proof read, I get too excited!

RevelsRoulette · 17/11/2013 11:33

hmmm. odd. Let me test.

mitmoo mitmoo mitmoo

What phone doesn't let you scroll up? That's crazy.

Sorry OP my phone sez no.

I'd like to write nicely but my phone doesn't care about what I think. My fat fingers and the multi language keyboard doesn't help either.

RevelsRoulette · 17/11/2013 11:44

I hear something

YABU. You are assuming grammatical errors are all and only being made by posters using their phone.

It is quite easy to spot and correct the absurd auto corrected word in phone posts, and frequently the poster then immediately corrects the word.

Bad grammar has no connection to whether a phone or a keyboard has been used.

Incorrect spelling is presumably more likely using a keyboard. My phone corrects my spelling, albeit it occasionally predicts and inserts a word I wasn't expecting.

I use a top of the range Android to post which uses that really clever "Swype" input where one just swipes over the keyboard to add words. Most of the time it's amazingly accurate.

I can't use any other meeting to post on here as I set the forum to be permanently logged in on this phone and can't remember either my password or which e-mail address I used to register so I can't log on with any other item of hardware.

I often have typos cause it's try jus to scroll on my phone and I often can't get back to finish tge post if I go up. --tis a piece of piss to do links on a phone though]]

Opps

Caitlin17 · 17/11/2013 11:53

My phone has just double posted and has I assume, caused the OP to go into an an apoplectic rage, ruining her Sunday.

IslaValargeone · 17/11/2013 11:58

Sometimes threads move so quickly, responses would be overlooked/out of date if one had to proofread?

IslaValargeone · 17/11/2013 12:00

I can cope with the odd spelling mistake, grammatical cock up.
A lengthy post without punctuation, paragraphs, or God forbid text speak, I just don't read.

CoffeeTea103 · 17/11/2013 12:04

I can deal with the auto corrects or spelling mistake but it's the paragraphs without any full stops or other punctuation that gets me. I don't bother reading once I see one like that.

Nanny0gg · 17/11/2013 14:29

Caitlin17 Nope. Quite calm and sanguine thanks.

It is more the lack of punctuation and capitalisation that I can't cope with. A whole 'stream-of-consciousness post is virtually unreadable (especially combined with text-speak). And often the poster will apologise (because they're on their phone).

I have had an explanation from MNHQ for the deletions. It wasn't me (phew!)
