To go ahead and be a sex chatline worker?

Hi all,
I'm a regular and have been on and off for years so I have changed my name!
In a nutshell : DH lost his job in August, we have no savings, 2 dc and a huge mortgage (outskirts London so stupid money)

Anyway I'm a therapist (beauty and massage) worked for an agency- money okay but jobs were 2 hours away with a minutes notice and I was visiting strangers houses (scary situations- HORRID that could be another thread).

SO I started wondering what I could do from home.. I came across an advert for chatlines...
Now the money isn't amazing but if you put the hours in you can get £250 a week.. (I know it isn't a life changing sum but I chat crap while mopping the floor or emailing etc) and it's safe and in the comfort of ones own home and I need money.

Has anyone done this work? I did actually see a thread about some chat line women on mumsnet but it was 5/6 years old didn't want to bump up an old thread..

Any info/advice welcome!!

Do chat lines still exist then? I thought it was all webcam now?

I did this once YEARS ago. I was 21 and fairly innocent. You know, there are some right perverts out there.
One guy asked if I was into watersports and I wittered on about water skiing and wakeboarding

I lasted a whole 8 minutes in that job.

D0 - I thought the same until today when I rang up the head office and the woman said it's in demand..my understanding is this chatline workers = £8 per hour Webcam girls = up to £25/£30 per hour

Tarot line work - great advice and I could actually do it infront of dh

Dobe - I recently worked for an agency and was sent to 'respectable gentlemen' - biggest pervs actually very scary so I've seen/met all sorts but at least this is in the safety of my own home
Oh and Dobe 8 mins is very good (so I've been told...most last for 3 mins..you were a pro )

Hey there. I was a phone boner quite a few years ago and have also had some experience with working as an online tarot reader.
Phone sex is fine if you have a thick skin, a sense mucky of humour and the people around you are honestly comfortable with it. However, it's something I would only recommend doing for the short term because it really can worm some weird shit into your psyche. You get really desensitized to all sorts of.. ideas, language and situations, and that can have quite a negative knock on effect in your life, self identity and personal relationships. If you are going to do it, my advice is to give yourself a 6 month limit max, and only do a few shifts a week.

To be honest I actually found the phone sex work an easier moral choice than tarot. I have/had (it's been quite a few years now) a basic understanding of card reading, so thought I'd try out phone readings as a job. But it is a business y'know? One that is designed to get more money out of quite desperate people who are often looking for answers and support for quite serious problems. I felt that the phone tarot service I briefly worked for really took advantage of lost people, turns out I much preferred the honesty of the phone sex lines. No-one was under any illusions calling a mucky phone line!

Thankyou Ami for that! Completely with you on the 'easier moral choice' to do sex chat over tarot (hate ripping vulnerable people off but don't feel that way about some drunk guy calling whilst his dw is sleeping in next room)

They are much and such the same on the moral scale imo.

Sex lines have cheating bastards calling, they are hiding bills from their wives etc, and a lot of the guys are addicted. I did sex texting and chat online for a while and most of the guys on there were awful, sleazy guys, who thought they were in a 'relationship' of sorts and the way they spoke about their partners was awful. I was even contacted by a couple of partners begging me to stop talking to their partners.

Tarot lines do have vulnerable people calling, although not as many as I thought, but you are in a position to advise them on a personal level, tell them to contact relevant agencies, listen to them and help in general.

It's all a matter of personal choice. Tarot work sat better with me.

This - it seems not but thinking about it how can someone 'prove' to be a REAL tarot reader ? IT'S all rather grey in the beginning ...

Can I ask..what made you do the job? Lastly was the money good?

I needed a job that I could do from home, I accidently stumbled into it really, but I made fairly good money from both. The £x an hour is slightly misleading for phonelines though as you don't get paid for the first minute of each call and you don't get paid for the time between calls. I was making around £200 pw on sex texting and £300+ for tarot, but it's a lot of night working too if you want to make good money.

You are self employed and have to get all the correct paperwork etc which is a pita as well.

Oh and the tarot reading is easy, I bought a cheap set of cards, put stickers on them with key words and had a folder with spreads all clearly named and marked out and a bit of bumf about what all the various things meant so it was easy reference, and waffled, a lot.

Funnily enough I am getting into it now for real but I wouldn't go back to the lines again, when you hear bad things all the time you become pretty disillusioned with life, Was good for a while though.

I would never do this it is against all my beliefs. I can see you are in a very difficult position op and it is safer than going out to peoples houses. Anyway it is something you have to decide for yourself and your own beliefs. So I am just telling you what I would do, which is if I couldn't afford to live in your area and find a safe job to move to a cheaper area of the country, maybe somewhere where you and your dh could find a job if possible. But honestly i would rather scrimp and save on benefits than do a sex line.

I'm more than happy to answer any specific questions you may have - although the blog series does cover quite a bit, including how much I actually walked away with once all the fees were taken (£172 went down to £88 after fees).

i did two shifts of telephone sex work years ago, and found it perfectly fine. i couldn't do domination, even under the direction of an expert sex-line dominatrix, i'm just not nasty enough. that was a revelation to me.

I did it not so long ago, it kept a roof over our heads and food on the table and i found it fine, its just a LOT of hours to get a decent amount of cash. I find it much more morally acceptable tban tarot. With sex lines everyone knows the score, but with tarot it is praying on peopkes vulnerability.

thehorridest i worked in a sex chatline office 11/12 years ago I was signing on previously to that and they put me on workfare for 3 months (i did a month at a charity shop and two months at my local council) when that was complete i was told i would have to go and work in Campbells soup factory for my JSA for another 3 months I had applied for loads of jobs and took the sex chatline job because they were the only job that was offering me PAID work.
This is why your post is too simplistic.
