To ask why little toenails fall off and don't hurt?

Or is it just me? But if my thumbnail came off after a bath it would hurt like ?????

I've never heard of this! It sounds like you have damaged the nail bed at some point.

MaidOfStars · 04/11/2013 15:06

They don't hurt because they are not toenails but in fact tiny little aliens that find a home buried in the recesses of our high-heel-damaged little tootsies. It was time for it to leave the nest for the next phase of its life.

Or, yes, you've damaged it and it's fallen off painlessly. If toenails don't come off very quickly after trauma, I find that they don't hurt in the slightest.

Edendance · 04/11/2013 15:10

It just fell off?? That's never happened to me Confused mine's weird though, more like a crunchy corner than an actual toenail.

Mine have come off before too, thought it was just me! I can cut them really low down and nothing untoward happens.

I've lost by big toenail and the one next to it too, that was painful! I had blisters under the nails after a marathon and eventually the nails fell off. It wasn't pretty.

paulagil · 04/11/2013 18:01

Hi girls. Yes, i think i must have damaged the nailbed as i am frquently stubbing my little toe on things. The nail grows very thick and then comes away, leaving another, thinner nail underneath. It's definitely a nail and not something else which would put you off your tea.

Definitely not a thread to read with your dinner Shock

Happy toe-nail growing.

paulagil · 04/11/2013 18:07

That's why i started it just after lunch Wink

I don't have little toe nails :(

MiconiumHappens · 04/11/2013 18:10

OP my big ones come off Sad

Have been to the docs and they have tested for fungal infection but came back clear.... I have no idea why, they seem to be worse when I run a lot.

Sorry for those eating tea.

Justforlaughs · 04/11/2013 19:06

I think that the little toe nail splits easily and leaves a thinner nail underneath. If the whole thing comes off it hurts like billyoh!

Feminine · 04/11/2013 19:14

Once, one of my little toe nails came off. Not my little toe, the one next to it.

Underneath was a gorgeous, fresh... perfect replacement!

bundaberg · 04/11/2013 19:17

wtf? your toenails just fall off? regularly?

WilsonFrickett · 04/11/2013 19:20

Yep. Usually after a bout of high-heel wearing crazy dancing. Few week later - double nail layer. Glad it's not just me!

mewmeow · 04/11/2013 19:22

Yanbu. Mine fell off today too Smile

paulagil · 04/11/2013 19:35

Glad it's not just me then. We should form a club: the Double Little Toenail Brigade.

What causes it, does anyone know?

Tell you what, if any of you were on the 'AIBU to hate toe post shoes' thread a wee while back as well as this, then I have found my foot sister family Grin

I suspect it's something to do with that mysterious thing, a 'nailbed'. I don't have the faintest idea what a nailbed actually does, but I bet it's all its fault...

lljkk · 04/11/2013 20:00

Mine have done this sometimes; peculiar but I don't worry about it. They grow back.

Sunshineonsea · 04/11/2013 20:33

Grin at crunchy corner

sydlexic · 04/11/2013 20:39

My little toe nail fell off, then both the big toe nails. I thought it was trauma caused by dancing with DH. A year later I was extremely ill, diagnosed with a B 12 deficiency.

MammaTJ · 04/11/2013 20:42

You have mouldy toe nails. You need to treat with curinail or maybe even a cheaper fungicide.

Ireallymustbemad · 04/11/2013 20:45

Sounds to me like a fungal infection. That has only happened to me when I had one, the top nail getting thicker and then falling off leaving a very thin one below.

I'd see the GP if I were you.

LydiaLunches · 04/11/2013 21:07

My little toenails grow a bit and then fall off, grow a bit, fall off, repeat my whole life and are tiny. I thought this was normal until I encountered toenail painting, not sure how as my 5 yr old noticed that they are unusually small/ non existent the other day. They are not as hard as a normal nails either.

I dont have much in the way of little toenails either. When I paint my toenails I have to paint on a bit of a fake one for my little toesBlush I hurt my foot once and the doctor in A&e noticed my pathetic attempt at my paint-on toenail and looked quite bemused about it. He smirked and said 'whats that?'Blush
