A sore throat shouldn't mean three days off work?

Yet here I am, emailing in sick on day 3 (phoning hurts to much).

Went to GP on Monday morning, he diagnosed straightforward virus causing pharyngitis. I had sore head and ears as well so thought one day working from home, ploughing through emails would be fine.

Instead I am a pathetic husk, lying in bed, cat-napping, necking pills and mumsnetting. Still feeling unbelievably crap.

My boss and colleagues are going to think I'm a lead-swinger, aren't they? BlushSad

No, why would they? Sore throats vary from a little tickle to raging quinsy. Feel better soonThanks

GillyBillyWilly · 23/10/2013 08:50

I had a quinsy when I was about 16.

Horrendous. Just.... Horrendous.

kelda · 23/10/2013 08:51

It's not just a sore throat though is it. My dh was really ill with a 'sore throat', temperature of nearly 40 degrees, needed antibiotics.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

GillyBillyWilly · 23/10/2013 08:51

I digress....

Take as long as you need... And get well soon! Thanks

FuckyNellItsHalloween · 23/10/2013 08:52

Quinsy???? Do I dare google?

kali110 · 23/10/2013 08:52

My sore throat meant inflamed and open sores, temp. I was off for over a wedk. Couldnt barely drink water let alone eat anything!yanbu.
Concentrate on getting better.

Ruprekt · 23/10/2013 08:53

I am on Day 5 of the same thing. ConfusedConfusedConfused

Sore, dreadfully sore throat. Exhausted. Can hardly move off sofa. Now got hacking cough! Sad

UnexpectedFrightInShaggingArea · 23/10/2013 08:54

I had quinsy as a teen too, truly grim. This isn't quinsy though, just an inflamed throat.

Thank for the flowers. I am lying here in equal amounts of pain and guilt for not being al work.

MY DD has been off Uni and work with a sore throat she is usually a trooper and is never off anything ill this has floored her . op Keep warm and get better soon

Nanny0gg · 23/10/2013 08:56

I had a throat infection one Christmas and I actually felt like death would have been preferable. Luckily it was in the days when the doctor actually opened the surgery for a few hours Christmas morning so I was able to get antibiotics straight away. I then stayed in bed for two straight days and totally missed Christmas altogether - just managed to see the DC open their presents. Smell of turkey cooking was foul!

Sore throats can be horrific. Get well soon.

GillyBillyWilly · 23/10/2013 08:56

I'm not at work either... Morning sickness! Sad

UnexpectedFrightInShaggingArea · 23/10/2013 08:57

Rupekt - day 5 ?! Nooooooooo!

My boss is away on a work trip - she's going to think I'm taking the opportunity for a sneaky sickie while she's away.

What are the rules about doctors' notes again?

My ds2 was hospitalised with pharyngitis in June so yes, it can be that bad! :(
Hope you are feeling better soon.
Try difflam spray - from the pharmacy and gargle with soluble co codamol.
X

Badvoc · 23/10/2013 09:00

You will need a self cert after 7 days I think...

mrsjay · 23/10/2013 09:01

I think you need a Drs note after 7 days (i think)

UnexpectedFrightInShaggingArea · 23/10/2013 09:15

Thank you Badvoc and MrsJay.

Will get myself or DH to the chemist to see what's there. I can't take any more time off.

Also thanks re doctors note. I might have to get one on Friday as I'm due to go on holiday from Monday, so if I am off all week then I won't be back in work until the following week.

I rang in with a sore throat once... for a week!

after being dismissed by gp twice and then my face ballooning it turned out to be mumps :(

Lilacroses · 23/10/2013 10:53

Well it sounds bloody horrible so please don't feel guilty. My Dp was iller than I've ever seen her with tonsilitus once. She actually cried she was in so much pain and that is unheard of. Hope you feel better soon.

PrimalLass · 23/10/2013 10:54

I had tonsillitis this year and it was absolute hell. I have not felt that ill in years. Take care of yourself and don't worry about work.

PrimalLass · 23/10/2013 10:56

Lilacroses I cried too, on the phone to NHS 24.

ephemeralfairy · 23/10/2013 10:58

I've had tonsillitis three times in the last year, and been off for three to five days each time. It was hellish, like flu with temperature, aching joints etc. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, could barely talk.
Rest and feel better soon!! xx

ephemeralfairy · 23/10/2013 11:00

Yes I cried in the doctors surgery when told there were no appointments left for that day....they saw me as an emergency in the end!

echt · 23/10/2013 11:01

I had quinsy back in the day. Awful beyond belief. Confined to bed.

On the other hand, when stricken by voice loss - near total - I was signed off until I could speak. I later found out a senior manager had said that any decent teacher could command a class without speaking. Hmm

GrendelsMum · 23/10/2013 11:02

Oh, I'm so glad other people are ill too. (Sorry!) I'm not nearly as ill as others, but I feel a complete idiot for feeling this sick for several days, when its 'just a cold'.
