A sore throat shouldn't mean three days off work?

Yet here I am, emailing in sick on day 3 (phoning hurts to much).

Went to GP on Monday morning, he diagnosed straightforward virus causing pharyngitis. I had sore head and ears as well so thought one day working from home, ploughing through emails would be fine.

Instead I am a pathetic husk, lying in bed, cat-napping, necking pills and mumsnetting. Still feeling unbelievably crap.

My boss and colleagues are going to think I'm a lead-swinger, aren't they? BlushSad

I'm on day 3 of being off for a cough. I speak with customers and can't get through more than a sentence without breaking out into a huge cough. I feel like such a faker when I call in, but it hurts so much.

Last time I had a 'sore throat' I was off work for two weeks. And my GP said I might need more. I thought I was being a moaner and being pathetic as i dragged my sorry self to the doctors after a weekend of not being able to eat or swallow well. She took one look at me, got out her medical cert and instructed me to go back to bed! She said it was so swollen she wished she had a medical student with her to show them, and was amazed I could even drink anything! I felt much, much less like a wimp after that.

She gave me antibiotics as it was a throat infection. Keep an eye on it, if it is not clearing you may have a secondary bacterial infection.

I feel for you. Sore throats are the absolute pits. Horrendous.

I had an awful sore throat when I was pregnant with DS2, so the pharmacist and gp wouldn't give me anything for it despite me begging in tears. I had a bundle of manic energy toddler DS1 to look after and it was horrific.

For years I would start to panic if I felt a sore throat brewing as I didn't think I could take it again.

Thankfully, have never had one that bad again.

You have my sympathy and I hope you get better soon.

I'm on day 3 of a sore throat too. Hit me out if no where on Monday, have been alternating freezing/boiling lots of ice water plus paracetamol and ibuprofen.

Sadly my throat is my weak spot, if anything gets to it in floored.

Had strep throat 3 years ago, that was horrible.

pointyfangs · 23/10/2013 11:14

You're not swinging anything at all, throat infections can be really serious. The last time I had one it was streptococcal - my temp went up to 41, I could only suck ice cubes and had to have liquid antibiotics as I couldn't swallow tablets. Take it seriously and go back if it doesn't improve, a bacterial throat infection is all too easy to get.

I had a sore throat, went to the doctor who basically said it was a cold and to take cough and cold remedies. Went back a week later as I felt even worse turned out I had bronchitis and if he'd given me some tablets the first time it would have been over before it even began :-(

Ended up with a sick note, rang work and they said don't care there's no one to cover your shift so you'll have to come in and try your best but you can't not come in or try to go home part way through. I was only 18 at the time and did a lot of damage to my lungs (coughed up a fair bit of blood but still couldn't have time off). Took so much longer to. cure than if I'd been able to rest

I had tonsillitis once and was in bed for a week and lost half a stone as I couldn't swallow. I also was vomiting as I couldn't cough, it was delightful. I thought my head was going to explode, the GP wouldn't give me antibiotics.

ChubbyKitty · 23/10/2013 11:49

I had a sore throat last week, had to have 2 days off. First day my ribs were on fire and I couldn't move. I had to balance my phone on the side of my head with my one working arm because the whole other side of my body was a write off. I can't remember what I did to survive because I was a little delirious from a fever Sad

UnexpectedFrightInShaggingArea · 23/10/2013 12:18

Sorry to hear of all the illnesses. Apparently my tonsils are fine, and it's a virus rather than a bacterial infection so antibiotics are no good. Just got to ride it out.

I'm glad I'm not the only one, and my lovely colleague has sent me a message to say not to worry. He has a new baby at home so I am better off here than in and spreading my germs to them.

You have my utmost sympathy. I had a horrendous throat infection once complete with a high temperature - the pain was unbelievable, and I had to take antibiotics for a week. Can still remember the pain 20 years on Sad

I was hospitalised for 4 days with a quinsy, they tried to drain it with a big needle after I'd sat in a&e throwing up and dangerously dehydrated for four hours. Horrible memories!

Hope you feel better op, sore throats for whatever reason can be nasty so cut yourself some slack!
