Rereading books 1 & 2 before mad about the boy, haven't read them for years, she is insinuated as fat in he films and books but she veers between 9st 3 and 8st 7! Know they were written a few years ago but still!

NotYoMomma · 19/10/2013 10:28

OwlinaTree · 19/10/2013 10:31

You are about 10 years late with this conversation!! Grin

MrsDeadfield · 19/10/2013 10:33

Yeah I know but it just enraged me this morning haha!

Most hilarious scene in a film for the fight in the restaurant IMHO.

Writerwannabe83 · 19/10/2013 10:48

I wouldn't waste your time reading Book 3.

I was pretty much bored from the off and it didn't get any better. I read about a quarter of it and then just gave up Smile

hackmum · 19/10/2013 12:16

In the first two books, Bridget is an unreliable narrator. The whole joke is that she keeps dieting even when she's self-evidently not fat. (In the new book her "ideal" weight is around 135lb, which is about 9 stone 7lb, which is what she used to regard as fat. I don't know why the weight is given in pounds, presumably for an American audience.) Of course in the films they made her actually fat - Rene Zelwegger went up to 11 stone, thus not only ruining the joke, but undermining the point of the books, which was to point out how much pressure women are under to be thin.

hackmum · 19/10/2013 12:17

Sorry 135lb is 9 stone 9lb, isn't it? Simple arithmetic fail.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 19/10/2013 12:19

Am I the only one who thought she was a bit frumpy and annoying and that MD would never have gone for her in real life?

Runs away.....

mrspremise · 19/10/2013 12:20

OMG Renée Zellweger was not 'actually fat', by unrealistic Hollywood standards maybe but really??

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 19/10/2013 12:31

No, but I do think she looks like a chipmunk.

DoJo · 19/10/2013 12:42

Zellweger walks like she's got stumps instead of feet. That is all.

Writerwannabe83 · 19/10/2013 12:49

Michelle Williams does too Dojo

For those who don't know her, she's the actress who was in Dawson's Creek and who had the baby with Heath Ledger. She was in Brokeback Mountain with him.

hackmum · 19/10/2013 12:51

mrspremise: certainly in the second film she looked very overweight to me!

Bogeyface · 19/10/2013 17:03

I am 5'6", at 11 stone I am a skinny size 10 so at 5'4" she would be a 12/14 ish.

she didnt look overweight at all, just normal! But then on screen no one is normal are they?

Bogeyface · 19/10/2013 17:04

I should add that WHEN I am 11 stone I am a skinny size ten. I am currently a 14/16, and no I wont tell you what I weigh :o

UsedToBeNDP · 19/10/2013 17:09

Bogey face, it's all relative. I'm 5'7" and 8st 10ish and am a sz10 too. When I was "big" (for me) I was 11st 2 and a size 14. I can't carry weight well, every lb shows on me.

Bogeyface · 19/10/2013 17:24

I just fail to see how anyone can say that she looks fat in this!

UsedToBeNDP · 19/10/2013 17:29

That link didn't work for me (took me to Uma Thurman doing the twist in Pulp Fiction!) but I know what you mean. I would agree. Fat isn't a word I'd use to describe the BJ character in the films. She's probably got what I would describe as a pretty 'average' sized body in them. I think it's possibly because we're so used to seeing thingy, the actress, brain's gone blank, so painfully thin in RL that a 'normal body' on her looks big.

UsedToBeNDP · 19/10/2013 17:30

Zellwegger! That's it. Hit post and it came to me. Sieve brain

DanglingChillis · 19/10/2013 17:35

What hackmum said. And of course we are all suppose to be so impressed with how Renee Zellweger PUT ON WEIGHT!!!! for the role. Hollywood has very warped ideas about women.

SidandAndyssextoy · 19/10/2013 17:37

Helen Fielding has said that she deliberately never stated Bridget's height so you didn't know what she looked like. Saying that, you won't find many builds where 9lbs 7oz is obese. I'd kill for it. I also found the whole 'chubby Bridget' thing in the film annoying and point-missing.

MrsDeadfield · 19/10/2013 17:51

I would hope 9lb 7oz is not obese SidandAndyssextoy Wink

I am a few chapters in of the new one and it's just meh.

It reads like the million bazillion gerzillion Bridget copies that suddenly vomited forth from chicklit hell in the immediate aftermath of Bridget 1 and 2.

I can't put my finger on why it's so wrong.

The fact that Tom and Jude (or is it Shazzer) are still running round pissed in the middle of the night when they are supposed to be in their 50s (presuming they are the same age as Bridget) while she mops poo up is just absurd.

I think it boils down to HF having been able to write a 30 yr old, but missing the mark completely on someone older.

Writerwannabe83 · 19/10/2013 18:00

I agree *justbecause' - the term 'meh' sums it up perfectly Smile

veiledsentiments · 19/10/2013 18:04

Thought it was dreadful. Just presumed 10 years on I had grown out of it. Definitely won't be going to the film version.
