To have REALLY shouted at this woman

Was walking home along busy main road with my dog (on lead).
See another dog approaching (staffie) 30 odd feet away, on a lead BUT lead is in the hand of a small child (5/6 yo). Mother of child walking behind about 15 feet.

I knew what was going to happen and I bet you do too.

Yep, the other dog clocked mine and belted towards us, pulled child over and lead out of childs hand, of course.

I had to stop her dog attacking mine whilst the stupid bitch ran over to grab her dog. Child crying (fell onto grass so hope more scared than hurt)

I cannot recall exactly what I said to her, but was along the lines of what kind of fool is she to let a small child "control" a dog - esp a staffie.

Sorry to staffie lovers, but I have seen too many staffie attacks and am terrified of them attacking my westie cross, he's been attacked 3 times.

I really hate staffies having a bad rep. All the staffies I know are lovely, gentle dogs, it's the owners that are the problem.

YANBU about the rest of the stuff though. A small child should not be allowed to take charge of a strong dog, let alone near a busy road.

well it all went quickly, was alarming and distressing. It isn't always easy to be very calm and gentle at times like that. I think the mother was being a bit irresponsible. You cannot expect a 5/6 year old to control a dog.

How did she react?

YANBU that a small child should not be in control of a dog that is stronger than they are.

Until I got to "especially a staffie".

I have three Staffies who have all been attacked first by smaller dogs as well as larger dogs but no matter what, my dogs get the blame.

I would never allow a chid to be in control of any dog ,
I do think you are being unreasonable because you are blaming a breed and not the owner (who was in the wrong) .
I have owned 3 staffys and believe you me I have had met so many small terriers who bark and lunge at my dogs who just walk on by and don, t react in any way .
borders , westies and jack russels seem to be worse than bigger dogs by trying to start trouble .
Must be a small dog thing .
I am sorry if your dog had been attacked before .

If the child wanted to hold the lead the dog should have had two leads attached, one held by the child and one held by the woman.

ZZZ she didn't say a bloody thing.

It's the harm that could come to her child that gets my goat, not just the damage that a dog out of control could do to mine.

The fact that it was a Staffie scared ME, for the reasons I stated on my OP. I have of course met some lovely friendly ones, but am always nervous of them.

I hope, now that she has seen what can happen, she never lets her child hold the dogs lead again by himself. I am just Shock that it didn't occur to her that it was not a good idea to begin with.

I reallly really get fucked off with people who are irresponsible with their dogs!

My DD is completely shit scared of ducks as one jack russell off its leash at a kids park FFS went for her, knocked her over and scratched her arms and face! I tore strips off that woman, demanded her details and gave them to the Dog Patrol Officer at the LA. Shocking!

To clarify, it doesn't really matter what kind of dog it was - the particular breed just added to my fear. A Yorkie could pull a child that young off it's feet.

If you meant especially staffies because they are all vicious yabu. If you meant especially staffies because they are bigger and stronger than a small child then yanbu.

Yadnbu to shout at her. She should be in control of the dog, a five or six year old shouldn't be in charge of an elderly teacup chihuahua because all dogs are unpredictable no matter how well trained. You, your dog, her dog and her child could all have been seriously hurt.

The trouble with staffies is that to a non dog-expert (people like me) is that they do look fairly similar to Pitt Bulls.

Not saying they are the same. But they do look similar.

Maybe that's why people are so wary of them?

Staffies are a "hunty" sort of dog so the OP isn't wrong in saying the breed especially should be taken extra care of.

Yes.
He certainly did NOT provoke. He was on a lead as always. They were off lead. They ran to him and went for him.

I have also seen two staffies tearing each other to pieces and their owners were complety unable to get their jaws unlocked for ages.
On that occasion I waded into the sea and put my dog in a boat that was moored there until the fighting dogs were carted off to the vets.

Have these experiences biased me asainst the breed? Yes, of course they bloody well have.

Oooo, apparently Jack Russells are the 3rd most vicious dog.

I had a friend with a Jack Russell which bit. Also know a brown lab who can be vicious.

Dog next door recently went for me but I have no idea what he is!

I was shouting at the Mother for HER irresponsible behaviour. She was endangering her child,quite apart from my dog, or is that OK with you?

So everyone's worried about the dogs and shouting the odds.

No ones worried about the child that's been pulled down.

And the Staffie part is just nothing to do with how the incident played out.

I was attacked by a golden lab as a child I am not wary of golden labs
Just the one that bite a chunk out my leg

My gorgeous staffie was not bred to hunt though he was born to be our companion

Jack Russell's can be happy visions little fuckers but not all of them are so I don't state that ALL jacks are
Don't tar the whole breed by the same brush please
