to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

I am currently eyeballing one that has a battery so powerful you can charge your phone from it...

I started off with USA blend, which I quite liked, but haven't had a tobacco flavour in ages! Favourite flavours at the minute include pear drops, coconut ice, vamp vape, lemon menthol. Only flavours I've had which I really don't like are cappuccino, ry4 and a black currant one. I love alchemist cupboard and t juice, though they can be a bit pricey.

ginmakesitallok · 01/10/2013 21:27

I use a glass tank, no worries about cracking. I did have a metal tank, but got fed up not being able to see how much juice I had left

Jux · 01/10/2013 21:56

My brother started vaping about 6 years ago. Within a month he had stopped smoking cigarettes, and within 2 months he was down to 0 nicotine. He filled his ecigs himself and got quite geeky about it all. He had so many devices, he obviously loved it (he died 3 years ago of non-smoking related cause). We still have all his gear in a box somewhere, though I've no idea whether it still works.

He got his stuff from Totally Wicked. We were going to ask them to send us a banner to drape on his coffin!

PainInTheBum · 01/10/2013 22:40

YANBU. I got my first eGo cig today and I think it is wonderful. I've tried Allen Carr, Champix, patches, gum, inhalators, I've even been for hypnosis but they never managed to get me under. I was still a miserable and heavy smoker, I made it a day at most and it was a day of utter misery. When I first heard of e-cigs earlier this year I went and got some e-lites and hated them they did nothing for me. But buoyed by this thread I headed to a vaping shop in town and after trying several flavours now have RY4 and am looking forward to trying more.

I've still got some tobacco but I've not touched it, I have a slight on edge feeling which I think is due to missing the physical habit of rolling a cig and going out, but it is nothing I can't handle. I wish I'd tried this a year ago, I'd have saved a fortune. I've even had a couple of glasses of wine but am still happy with the ecig.

Everyone who smokes and can't quit should try it, it's amazing. Get yourself to a proper shop if you can so you can try the different flavours and find what's right.

Waffling · 02/10/2013 06:17

Sorry for your loss Jux.

Isn't it amazing PainInTheBum?! I have tobacco left too and haven't touched it in a year.

Optimist1 · 02/10/2013 07:27

Katy, I just wanted to thank you for starting this thread, which has motivated me to decide to quit smoking. The geek-speak on some websites was a bit mind-numbing, but I've taken your advice and visited a shop where I was given simple advice and made my purchase of starter kit and juices. I'll be finishing off my current supply of Marlboro Gold by the weekend and starting a new, healthier, wealthier life as a vaper!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 08:28

Yay! optimist! I'm so glad to see your post. I noticed that the other thread got me and at least a couple of other people started and I hoped to continue it with this one.

I hope you get on with your set up.

What did you buy?

onlysettleforbutterflies · 02/10/2013 08:59

Hear hear, thank you Katy, I am now 36 hours in to my new no smoking life. Still requires a bit of will power, but I am managing, I'm enjoying the ecig and smoking it on the settee instead of outside in the rain!

Looking forward to the huge £££'s savings and health benefits.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 09:51

I do still sort of miss something about smoking. There is a little empty spot inside that craves something. I just know that I won't enjoy it at all. and I have this new thing to distract and amuse me, while giving me my fix.

ginmakesitallok · 02/10/2013 10:08

Katy, you obviously need something new and shiny!

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 11:01

I agree! I am going to buy something with variable voltage today! Having fun researching it...

OP posts:
ginmakesitallok · 02/10/2013 11:04

I've got a spinner ( in purple of course!), and an ego twist. The twist looks nicer, but the markings have worn off the bottom. Would recommend either

leylandii · 02/10/2013 11:21

Katy if you are looking for a variable voltage, have a look at this one.

this is the one I have bought and give it 10/10

Read all the reviews on anything you plan to purchase when going for an upgrade on ecigs as there is still alot of crap out there on the internet.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 11:44

I'm currently leaning towards spinner over twist, and am trying to find the best deal.

Eventually, I want this:

www.fasttech.com/product/1356000-innokin-itaste-mvp-2600mah-variable-voltage-e

I just don't want to wait for it to arrive. Grin

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/10/2013 12:09

My liquids have arrived! I'm vaping 18mg RY4 and it's so much more satisfying than the crappy 6mg generic 'tobacco' stuff that came with the vaporiser. Good throat hit and much more flavour too.

I'm not giving up fags immediately. I've still got about 2/3 of a 50g pouch left so I can spend a few days getting used to vaping before I'm completely reliant on it. It feels very different to my normal tiny roll-ups!

Optimist1 · 02/10/2013 14:03

Katy - I bought Kangertech S1 starter kit ... will sticky this thread and report back when I've got some experience under my belt.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 16:39

I have that exact same kit! How many clearomizers did it come with? finding the clearomizers and coils can be difficult, as I've discovered.

It's beautiful, though, isn't it?

OP posts:
KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 17:00

I have only been vaping less than two weeks and I've bought three starter kits, and three extra batteries and many clearomizers.

I think I need to stop, now.Blush

OP posts:
Optimist1 · 02/10/2013 17:23

Yes, very classy (it came with 7 clearomisers - two in the complete units and an additional 5 in the box)! Have PM'd you.

MistressDeeCee · 02/10/2013 17:25

PlentyOfPubeGardens good for you Smile The RY4 - is that a tobacco flavour & does it taste (close to) authentic?

stillenacht · 02/10/2013 17:53

Am puffing on my elite now (menthol). Bought a new packet of fags before I got my elite. Hoping they will go unsmokedSmile

KatyTheCleaningLady · 02/10/2013 18:01

Optimist, I am glad to hear that! If you clean your coils, they should last you a while. Remember to look for Kanger T2 coils to replace... they're a bit rare, now.

The threading of both the charger and the clearos are unique to the S1, so I'm sort of saving mine for special occasions or something. I like how pretty they are and that they won't roll off a table.

OP posts:
PlentyOfPubeGardens · 02/10/2013 19:01

7 hours since my last roll-up Smile The battery has just about run down now so I'll be back on the rollies for a bit - it only had half a charge on it when I started vaping at midday. I'm hoping my other battery will arrive tomorrow.

Yes RY4 is tobacco (with a little vanilla and caramel according to the pic on the website). The taste is fairly close but not exact.

What shall I try next? I have rum, mocha, vanilla or another tobacco one called desert ship (based on Camel, I imagine?).

awaywego1 · 02/10/2013 19:14

Hey-bit of advice if poss? I've read a fair bit of the thread but am confused and can't find the links again-sorry.
I'm a 10aday Rollie smoker-golden Virginia-I've resisted vaping as I wanted to give up nicotine entirely but it just isn't happening at the moment as I have cfs/me and in feeling rubbish. So I'm going to give it a go-briefly used one of the disposable ones a few years ago but didn't really work for me.
Sooo I want a cheap starter kit with fast delivery and some gv flavoured liquid-any ideas?
Thanks Grin
