Talking about birthday parties WIBU to do this?

August born Ds is starting pre-school in September, so I am aware that he will potentially be invited to parties and I would like to throw a birthday party for him and invite classmates.

However, as I am also August born, I remember quite well how my birthday was forgotten about by everyone at school, every summer.

So to avoid this issue, I am planning on throwing ds's birthday party a month early each year, so his classmates can attend as I appreciate their families may have other plans during the summer holidays.

Is this really weird? I never actually had a birthday party, so I'm not quite sure of the etiquette here.

Tbh it would also save a lot of hassle to do it a month early as his birthday is very close to mine, so I take that week off work each year so we can holiday/do things as a family and a birthday party in the middle of it could be difficult, logistically.

My ds is August born and i he has a party mid July.
If you wait until August, the numbers will be low.

Not weird at all! I think most people would understand that. Lovely for your ds to celebrate with friends, and like you say, August can be busy for everyone.

It's not weird, but be aware that others have the same idea. My dd just finished year R and the last few weeks of term were packed with parties because of this. You also have to make sure you miss things like the school fete, it's a busy time of year. Get your invites out stupidly early.

I don't see why not. It sounds like a sensible suggestion that my own DD will wish I had thought of . We had years of nightmare party problems, trying to arrange when everyone is around, people forgetting etc.

I'm August born too, in fact my birthday is tomorrow and I don't remember being forgotten but then I never invited my class as a whole. I'd have had my best friends over for tea or something. The idea of inviting the whole class to a party seems (to me at least) to be a fairly recent thing and we're certainly not going to be able to do that with DS (Space! Cost! Stress!) so I'd suggest something s bit smaller with the folks you've kept in touch with over the summer.

You could do either July or September. You may find that July is vv busy with fetes, other parties etc. September might be easier to plan for.

My dd (now 15) has a mid August birthday.
We have always had a family BBQ around her actual birthday- usually the nearest weekend- and something with her friends in Sept (July is crazy)

We're doing the opposite - DD (beginning of September birthday) starts primary school in a week or so. Due to doing odd morning/afternoon hours faffing about by primary schools, her class aren't all going to be in until 19th September for full days. I'd really like to do a full class party to make sure that she isn't left out of anyone else's party because she didn't invite them, so we're going to wait until the end of September or beginning of October to do the party. Hopefully if lots of them turn up it'll be an opportunity to get to know some of the families too.

My sons birthday is December 30th and I'm planning a party for him at end of novemberish, before they break up for Xmas :) I have to do November as I have another son who's birthday is 17th December so money in December is tight as it is with the 2 bdays and 3 lots of Xmas pressies lol. (I have 3 children by the way, but DS1s bday isn't a problem as it's in April x

It's a wonderful idea! My birthday is NYE so when I was younger most people were away this time of year, I'm from NZ so Christmas and NYE were during the long summer holiday. My mum would throw me a party in June and celebrate with family on the actual day.

My Aug born dd2 (6) had her party on her birthday, in the first week of August. We invited 25 children and 10 said yes and came. I knew this was going to be the case so picked a party which was suitable for smaller numbers. DD likes to have her party very close to her birthday at the moment, but as she gets older I think we'll move it to July or Sept. She's not really a big party type child so I just checked that her 3 closest friends could come and went with it. Nothing wrong with doing it early or late though.

I always do it too...DD is in late July. However...it does mean forking out for TWO celebrations essentially as we always go out for lunch etc on her actual bday.

Now she's a bit older (9) I seem to be learning more about her friends and know when they're going on hols etc. Next year I might find out in advance whose about and have something on her actual bday which I think she'll like!

Ds is going to a party this week.

The invites came out a couple of weeks before they broke up and we've had a text today to remind us which should mean that people do turn up if they said they can.

Dd I'd born at the end of August so when she starts school, I think we'll do her parties at the beginning of September.

The kids in my two DD's class with August birthdays do mid September parties. June becomes very hectic with end of term things etc.

My youngest has her birthday just before New Year and I will do her party in Jan as December is a hectic month for everyone.

This has never occurred to me and I have never heard of it!

DD1 is August born, DNiece is, DH is, and we have never had problems with birthday attendance.

Maybe we know people who will do anything for cake

I'm an August baby. There is a massive difference between England and Wales, where my birthday wss and is still, largely overlooked by friends hwcausr school is out and Scotland (where I grew up) where school tended to stary back on or around my birthday. I think you are being a wonderfully thoughtful Mummy by trying to alleviate the distress that I knowvfan be caused to August babies by the mere fact of the date of their birth. DH and I (for which read I) ensured that our babies would be born in term time because of the horror of a birthday in the summer holidays. Good on you, OP!

I have two August children - one gets a party towards the end of the July term, the other early on in September. Alternatively, one year we didnt have a birthday party and we had a Christmas party instead.
