Talking about birthday parties WIBU to do this?

August born Ds is starting pre-school in September, so I am aware that he will potentially be invited to parties and I would like to throw a birthday party for him and invite classmates.

However, as I am also August born, I remember quite well how my birthday was forgotten about by everyone at school, every summer.

So to avoid this issue, I am planning on throwing ds's birthday party a month early each year, so his classmates can attend as I appreciate their families may have other plans during the summer holidays.

Is this really weird? I never actually had a birthday party, so I'm not quite sure of the etiquette here.

Tbh it would also save a lot of hassle to do it a month early as his birthday is very close to mine, so I take that week off work each year so we can holiday/do things as a family and a birthday party in the middle of it could be difficult, logistically.

What a good idea! I posted last year about only one of the 7 children invited to my DDs birthday party came! This year we didn't bother!

Next year, I may well pinch your idea! Grin

I would recommend doing the party in September rather than July. When your son is at school, it means he will always be able to invite his new classmates (really helps with getting socially accepted etc) it's nice to be able to kick start fledgling friendships at that time of year.

Should also ensure he is invited to other parties!

My sons birthday was this week. We go out to dinner as a family on the day and he does something with his friends in September.

I would do it in the summer term as your child's 4th birthday will get muddled up with the 5th birthdays. Some of the other children might call yours a 'baby' as they will appear to be a full year younger. Don't forget there will be some children who turn 5 on 1st September before they go back to school.

Ds1's birthday is beginning of September which means I have to get the invitations out by the end of the summer term if I'm going to be able to get an idea of numbers by the time of the party. Bit of a pain in the arse, because dd's birthday is in July so I feel like I'm arranging two parties at the same time.

Ds2's birthday is on the 1st of September, so goodness knows how that will pan out once he starts school!

Dd2 is 31st august born, she starts school this year and is having her party on 1st September with her Pre school pals!

HorryIsUpduffed · 26/08/2013 09:26

DS1's August friend had his party in July - the weekend between the last two weeks of term, to make sure everyone was still around. Nobody thought it was weird.

wonderingsoul · 26/08/2013 09:27

i like the idea!

ds2 birthday is the 28th of decembever so very close to christmas and new year when people are away busy have thier own partys so i may nick this and do it for jan when he goes back to school to.

bruffin · 26/08/2013 09:30

Both mine are September born so have to do invites ladt minute. We have had parties in october or november.

MadeOfStarDust · 26/08/2013 09:38

My DD2 is an early July - but that is fraught enough! Summer fetes, school trips, residential trip in Y6, German trip in Y7 etc etc, would not move it back to July unless you intend to be even more flexible again in future years...

justmakingdo · 26/08/2013 09:44

Im a late December birthday, my mother always did a party in late June
for my half year

wonderingsoul · 26/08/2013 12:44

just- i had thought about this, but i didnt like the idea of not celebrating the actually day he was born, and seemed unfair to have two birthdays.

bruffin · 26/08/2013 12:58

I dont see the problem of having two birthdays occassionally. In our house mine and the dcs birthdays are all in the same week. So doesnt rwally feel that special. When i have done party late we have done it as a halloween party. It worked really well.

BrianTheMole · 26/08/2013 13:04

I would do it in the august. A boy in dd's class has his birthday at the end of august. He has his party then too. Nearly everyone from the class turns up. We like it as it gives the kids a chance to see eachother in a fun setting before school starts, and its nice to have a gossip with the other parents about the holidays. Its not always easy to stop and chat on the school run.

BrianTheMole · 26/08/2013 13:04

Just give the invites out the week they break up, and send a txt reminder to chase people up.

DropYourSword · 26/08/2013 13:05

Whatever you decide, avoid red and yellow bands!

BlehPukeVomit · 26/08/2013 13:06

I tink I would do it in September when the kids are back at school. It will be a nice way to start the year and to meet any new kids.

There is nothing unusually about it at all.
