To detest robbie Williams' lyrics

So trite, so meaningless and yet so smug. They always sound like he thinks he's being oh so clever and witty. I give you:

Every single morning
Wake up in the afternoon
Cover up the mirror
Just to get a better view
Been around the world and never even left the room

I mean really. It just doesn't make sense and has no purpose. It's like he's imitating talented yricists/writers who can successfully work on different levels. But this just doesn't!

And

Ring a ring of roses
Whoever gets the closest
She comes and she goes
As the war of the roses
Mother was a victim
Father beat the system
By moving bricks to Brixton
And learning how to fix them

Roses- rhymes with closest, which rhymes with...uh....roses! And it's all a pile of meaningless shite!!

I hate Robbie Williams generally. He makes my skin crawl.

Bleurgh

seaweedhead · 18/08/2013 15:01

yanbu. Its not as if he's even a good singer.

Montybojangles · 18/08/2013 15:01

YABU, most song lyrics are meaningless shite. Robbie Williams certainly doesn't have a monopoly on that.
Bohemian rhapsody- WTAF is that all about?

Bowlersarm · 18/08/2013 15:02

YABU.

He's great. Can do no wrong.

melika · 18/08/2013 15:04

Hey ho here we go, a little too high and a little too low, she thinks she's made of candy whoa oa oa.

Total utter crap which is annoyingly catchyGrin

Iamsparklyknickers · 18/08/2013 15:04

YANBU.

He was my teenage crush and it's awful to have all my memories destroyed by this pretentious whinge bag that he's developed into (or maybe I just didn't notice before) Sad

He should have hung up his microphone after the Sinatra stuff and stuck to being an LA eccentric chasing UFO's.

The random lyrics just remind me of 1984 where they randomly generate lyrics just to keep the proles happy.

PeriodMath · 18/08/2013 15:07

Yanbu. I can't stand him. Such a gigantic ego, how can anyone stand to be in his company?

LegoLegoEverywhere · 18/08/2013 15:07

Every single morning
Wake up in the afternoon

Been around the world and never even left the room

I took these lyrics to be about low self-esteem and depression. If you're depressed it can be very hard to get out of bed to face the world hence you're more likely to sleep in until the afternoon. He's avoiding looking at himself in the mirror as he doesn't like what he sees and that his experience of the world is from his internet/tv rather than having the physical experience. Quite clever lyrics really.

McNewPants2013 · 18/08/2013 15:12

Lego I wish MN had a like button for that post.

WhatsWithTheDecaf · 18/08/2013 15:20

Nah, sorry,

It's the way he smugly says he wakes up in the morning in the afternoon (so you woke up in the afternoon, right?)

And covered the mirror to get a better look (nonsense)

He wants you to believe there's more to it than that and he's being all clever, but truly, there isn't! It reminds me in some ways of the love poems I used to write as a teenager, with all their pointless metaphors and riddles!

HeySoulSister · 18/08/2013 15:22

Does he write them?? Not sure if he writes for himself or not...

He's a great performer

WhatsWithTheDecaf · 18/08/2013 15:22

The random lyrics just remind me of 1984 where they randomly generate lyrics just to keep the proles happy.

I love this!!

HeySoulSister · 18/08/2013 15:24

Not nonsense at all.... lego that's a good post. Doubt your explanation will be taken on board tho

Shesparkles · 18/08/2013 15:25

YABU he is my husband (he just doesn't know this yet)

mynameisslimshady · 18/08/2013 15:25

It's music, it's open to interpretation, there could be a million meanings, or none at all, but it will be different things to different people.

girlsyearapart · 18/08/2013 15:28

Yabu and shesparkles I'm never divorcing him!

HeySoulSister · 18/08/2013 15:28

You could say the same about 'blurred lines' and countless other songs..... At least Robbie (still) makes money/fills stadiums etc

koalacube · 18/08/2013 15:32

YANBU He is a plum of the highest order and his lyrics make my brain itch.

Rock DJ and that one about the kids (?) with Kylie are the worst I think. Yuuuuuuuuuuuuk.

If only we weren;t subjected to local rado all day at work....

dancemom · 18/08/2013 15:34

Gary Barlow actually wrote Candy!

noddyholder · 18/08/2013 15:34

I love Robbie

KellyHopter · 18/08/2013 15:36

He's in the same attention seeking, smug, skin-crawl category as David Walliams.

Creepy, lardy div.

BrokenSunglasses · 18/08/2013 15:36

Robbin Williams is fab.

You might not like the lyrics, but there's no denying that he is good at his job.

HeySoulSister · 18/08/2013 15:39

Did guy chambers write for him? And Duffy?

AdoraBell · 18/08/2013 15:43

Decaf I mean this in the nicest possible way, genuinely not a dig, but are you one of those lucky people who has never experienced depression, or seen a loved one experience it?

Or do you simply take everything at face value and expect the world and all it's occupants to make sense?

noddyholder · 18/08/2013 15:46

I agree a lot of his songs refer to his struggles with day to day life.
