To be baffled by Richard Gere's continuing career?

Ok, so he looked pretty hot in An Officer And A Gentleman but that does not excuse his on-going employment in the business that is show.

This man cannot convey any emotion. I know when he's trying really hard to Do Some Proper Acting, he kindly signposts it by blinking a lot and doing some heavy breathing. Oh Richard, Richard, Richard, the ghost of Laurence Olivier is rolling his eyes at you.

You make Keanu Reeves look like a seasoned Shakespearean thesp.

Also, he's not even that handsome, he looks like the assistant manager at a building society.

Any Gere fans who want to fight his corner?

Legend has it that he has a rather nice sock collection, surely that counts as a plus

Remotecontrolduck · 09/08/2013 01:25

Nah he's crap, and not all that good looking!

AmandaHoldenmigroin · 09/08/2013 03:32

I like him but he can only play the part of someone that's wealthy.
looked good in Yanks, modelled the Giorgio Armani in American Gigalo and he takes girl shopping in Pretty Woman. What more could you want than a man who brings your folks a rationed item (yanks) or chooses you over Sharon Stone (Intersection)?
Keanu Reeves I can't explain.

AmandaHoldenmigroin · 09/08/2013 03:33

I did see him once and felt a bit giggly cause his voice was familiar from the movies.

moreyear · 09/08/2013 04:04

And he is like 156! Which you think would signal an end to your career as a Romantic lead in movies - but apparently not.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 09/08/2013 04:22

Tbf he was great in Chicago and apparently worked really really hard to get the tap dancing that good according to the DVD extras.

But in general yep I kind of agree.

Eastpoint · 09/08/2013 04:37

His house in the Hamptons is for sale at the moment, on at $65 million, will apparently go for much less, maybe he's short of money having not been very successful for a while.

Amusing for property porn

Richard Gere's house

diamond211 · 09/08/2013 08:39

I used to really like Richard Gere, thought he seemed really 'nice'. That is until I saw him on the Graham Norton Show - can't stand him now!

Lagoonablue · 09/08/2013 08:42

I think he is a good actor. Just watched Arbitrage. He got oscar nomination for it I think.

He has a very 'method' way of acting which can look low key.

Greythorne · 09/08/2013 08:45

This spectacular newly listed 33-acre estate is located in Sagaponack, NY overlooking the famed Sagg Pond with ocean views. There is also another 19 acre of protected preserve. It is owned by Robert Hurst, a former executive at Goldman Sachs. The traditional style mansion features 11,000 square feet of living space with 8 bedrooms, 8.5 bathrooms, multiple gathering rooms, 6 fireplaces, wood paneled library, media room, gym, screened in porch with built-in grill, stone patios and multiple private decks. The grounds offer a swimming pool and a tennis court. It is listed at a whopping $65,000,000, making it one of the most expensive estates currently for sale in the country.

Are you sure it's Richard's?

LaurieFairyCake · 09/08/2013 08:50

Agree, he has a low key style of acting

We really loved him and Susan Sarandon in Arbitrage last year.

Punkatheart · 09/08/2013 08:55

I saw him in a film last night and thought exactly the same thing. He is always Richard Gere in everything he does, a star rather than an actor. There is nothing conveyed behind the eyes. I don't think he is low-key - but bland and unengaging. Actually, quite cold - no matter what the role. He never lets go.

So YANBU!

NobodyPutsTomArcherInTheCorner · 09/08/2013 08:56

I thought he was brilliant in Chicago.

Anything else I've seen him in he always appears to be quietly bemused.

Katiepoes · 09/08/2013 08:57

He gives me the heebiejeebies. Especially when he does his 'emotional sensitive whispering voice'. Max from Eastenders does that voice too. How anyone could see him as a romantic lead is beyond me.

Lighthousekeeping · 09/08/2013 08:59

I can't imagine he would have a 65 million dollar property he doesn't seem the type. Unless he paid only a couple for it.

NonnoMum · 09/08/2013 09:00

Wasn't he Danny in Grease in the original stage play? Before it was filmed with John Travolta?

squoosh · 09/08/2013 10:26

Oh I forgot his appearance on Graham Norton, he did come across as a bit of a prat.

Takes himself so seriously!

OP posts:
redexpat · 09/08/2013 11:27

OMG when he was on Graham Norton time itself slowed down. It dragged and draged and dragged some more, and we only saw 45 minutes worth! It must have felt like a lifetime for Graham Norton!

Eastpoint · 10/08/2013 05:58

Absolutely definitely sure it's his house, he's probably had it for 25/30 years & would have paid far less then. American estate agents are different, they name the celebs who are selling up. Last year Kathleen Turner's house was on the market

Kathleen Turner's house

It sold & is currently being renovated, it was a real mess according to my source.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 10/08/2013 07:58

You are being VVVU - I've got all hot and bothered just thinking about him

How can you not love him in an officer and a gentleman?! The motel scenes Grin

He single handedly responsible for me going out with a Royal Marine officer for two years just for the uniform!

Hassled · 10/08/2013 08:02

You're not wrong. And he really does look like an Assistant Manager. An Assistant Manager who plays a lot of golf.

Mrsrobertduvall · 10/08/2013 08:09

Liked him in Arbitrage but lost a lot of respect for him after GN show like most of you.
An arse.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 10/08/2013 08:23

You're not wrong. And he really does look like an Assistant Manager. An Assistant Manager who plays a lot of golf.

What?! Are you all blind ?

Trigglesx · 10/08/2013 08:44

No, sorry, I have to agree. Richard Gere? Not bothered.

And it literally RUINED that movie First Knight. How anyone could believe that she would pick Richard Gere over Sean Connery is beyond me. Confused Sean Connery wins hands down every time. Richard Gere looked positively shaggy and unkempt. bleugh..

Cerisier · 10/08/2013 08:53

Liked him in Arbitrage, luckily didn't see the GN show. Watched An Officer and a Gentleman only last week with the DDs, we all liked it, it hasn't dated badly.
