to think Julian Assange is a complete tool?

His latest offering is bitching online about how he is being abused by being detained for 3 years without being charged.

"I have not been charged. It's an extraordinary situation that someone could be detained for three years without charge. That's part of the abuses in this case,"

Hmm

YANBU.

Crinkle77 · 08/08/2013 13:32

Don't know too much about the law but surely he has not been charged cos he is hiding out in the Ecuadorian embassy. Can you be charged with an offence in your absence? Don't know too much about how it works.

Tanith · 08/08/2013 13:33

I thought you could be tried and convicted in your absence?

dexter73 · 08/08/2013 13:38

YANBU - he is a complete tool, comparing being questioned about sexual assault to a kiss and tell. Dick.

YouTheCat · 08/08/2013 13:39

You can be tried and convicted in your absence. Police have just caught up with some Mafia bloke who got 10 years but didn't turn up to the trial.

But I think you have to actually be present to be charged with something.

VenusRising · 08/08/2013 13:42

He has human rights, no matter what he has done, or not done.
Yabu.

quesadilla · 08/08/2013 13:42

I dunno... I'm really unsure what to make of him.

All my instincts tell me he is probably at the very least a massive sleaze and probably a sexual predator and that there's almost certainly no smoke without fire to these sexual allegations.

But by the same token I wouldn't put it past the various governments involved to have paid these women to smear him. It certainly is very convenient for the Americans.

GuffSmuggler · 08/08/2013 13:44

He is not being 'detained'! He is hiding at the embassy like a complete coward instead facing up to the justice system.

YANBU he is a knob-end of the highest order.

YouTheCat · 08/08/2013 13:44

If he is hiding in an Embassy the police can't charge him. He would have to turn himself in in order to be charged.

But he is a huge coward and so won't want to justice system to prove him to be guilty (which I think he is).

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/08/2013 13:45

He's not being detained.

PenelopePipPop · 08/08/2013 13:45

Venus rising but he hasn't been charged because he failed to return to Sweden to face questioning. The fact that he decided to hole up in the Ecuadorian embassy does not make him detained.

He might, after being extradited to Sweden and being questioned by a prosecutor there be charged and denied bail (seeing as he has already skipped the country once I'd denying bail is a dead cert). But up till now he has never been detained by any state at any time. His stay at the Ecuadorian Embassy is entirely voluntary.

So yep he is a tool.

fubbsy · 08/08/2013 13:48

YANBU he hasn't been detained. He is staying in the Ecuadorian embassy voluntarily. Who is keeping him there? Himself.

PenelopePipPop · 08/08/2013 13:48

Otoh it is a pretty innovative line refusing to kiss and tell is a pretty innovative line to take against rape allegations. Kind of admire that chutzpah.

But still a tool.

GuffSmuggler · 08/08/2013 13:49

Seriously though, what is he going to do, live there forever moaning about his fate?

Surely he realises he has to face the music sooner or later, it's not going to go away!

JuliaScurr · 08/08/2013 13:52

he hasn't been charged because the Swedish system doesn't work like that.

Wikileaks expose of killing civilians etc is good

Bradley Manning is being punished for that. Assange doesn't seem too bothered.

So, yep - tool

ANormalOne · 08/08/2013 13:52

He is a coward and a tool, I have no respect for him.

Sallyingforth · 08/08/2013 13:58

He has human rights, no matter what he has done, or not done.
Quite right.
He has the human right to a fair trial in Sweden so that he can prove his innocence.
Unfortunately, he has chosen to give up his human rights and hide in a foreign embassy.

WMittens · 08/08/2013 14:24

Funny how we never heard anything about the sexual assault allegations until after he published American confidential military and political documents.

Maybe I've watched Enemy of the State too many times, but it still sounds like fabricated bollocks.

Crinkle77 · 08/08/2013 14:26

Thanks for that YouTheCat thought that may be the case but was just not sure

LessMissAbs · 08/08/2013 14:30

He certainly lacks social skills, so YANBU in thinking he comes across as a tool. Theres a certain lack of empathy for others, and an obsessive desire towards pursuing his own aims.

Ah Sweden, that bastion of falsified accusations and strict justice. How dare women think he does not have the right to have sex with them again when he has once done so? Don't they know he is Julian Assanges?

JessicaBeatriceFletcher · 08/08/2013 14:31

WMittens - even IF the charges are trumped up, if he truly believes he has been doing the right thing with publishing that stuff, he should stand by what he believes and not run hiding into embassies. I may not agree with what he has done, but at least Bradley Manning behaves consistent with a belief that what he did was right and didn't run off hiding. And by doing so, comes over far better and with more dignity and support than Assange. The point of this AIBU is Assange cannot claim to be detained when he has voluntarily shut himself into an embassy, therefore the only possible answer to the OP is YANBU.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/08/2013 14:32

YANBU. He's a self-serving knobtip.

jennycoast · 08/08/2013 14:34

YANBU

Longdistance · 08/08/2013 14:43

Yanbu.

He's a complete cock!

printmeanicephoto · 08/08/2013 15:01

There has been some speculation on the web that he may have Aspergers. What do you think?
