OMG Bear and Bare

carben · 02/08/2013 13:28

To be pissed off with people not being able to tell the difference between bear / bare. It's hardly rocket science. If I see 'bare with me' one more time ....I clearly need to stop skulking in the kitchen on mumsnet and get out and have some quality time with the kids.

OP posts:
cushtie335 · 02/08/2013 13:29

it's "would of" "could of" that drives me bananas.

thebody · 02/08/2013 13:30

it can be 'rocket science' to a dyslexic person op.

spelling ability is no measure of intelligence.

LazyMonkeyButler · 02/08/2013 13:30

YANBU. Same with there/their/they're.

Crinkle77 · 02/08/2013 13:30

Yeah it is annoying but stop being mean. I have just read that post and if the OP was upset she might have just done it in error without thinking.

Edendance · 02/08/2013 13:33

Agreed. Can't bear it

cushtie335 · 02/08/2013 13:34

Edendance I see what you did there :)

wanderings · 02/08/2013 13:36

Why am I loosing the will to live?

Grrr....

ImNotBloody14 · 02/08/2013 13:41

It's almost as bad as 'OMG'

squoosh · 02/08/2013 14:55

To be honest bare/bear is one of the ones that makes me pause for a second and think 'hmmm, now which is it........'. Whereas they're/their/there comes instinctively.

So YABU.

NadiaWadia · 02/08/2013 15:06

and 'it's to late' and 'you're children'. You see that a lot on here.

Dahlen · 02/08/2013 15:06

I used to have a job that required me to be a professional pedant. I like well-written copy and always endeavour to use correct spellings and grammar myself. However, MN is not like writing a job application and I wouldn't allow a simple mistake like that to alter how much credence I'll give the opinion it's presenting. Education and intelligence are not the same thing. Furthermore, even well-educated types often use the wrong one when typing furiously, and on a fast-moving site such as this I'm sure most posters do not proof-read, or give a cursory skim read only if they do.

TiaMariaandSpringCleaning · 02/08/2013 15:06

'alot' was always top of my pet hate list until I saw this cartoon. Now it makes me smile! Grin

Dahlen · 02/08/2013 15:07

I draw the line at text speak though. I have to read it out loud for it to make any sense to me, and simply CBA to do that.

Twirlyhot · 02/08/2013 15:09

Grin and bare it = flashing

mummybare · 02/08/2013 15:10

I can't think what you're talking about. Ahem.

Dahlen · 02/08/2013 15:10
Grin
candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/08/2013 15:11

I see "here, here" so often, it gets me doubting if it is or actually isn't right. I do know it's "hear, hear" but when you see something wrong all the time, you begin to doubt yourself!

ImNotBloody14 · 02/08/2013 15:11
Grin
ImNotBloody14 · 02/08/2013 15:12

Oh the Grin was for the 'alot' cartoon

BawbagBiggins · 02/08/2013 15:18

I was under the impression that either bare or bear were both perfectly acceptable in that context..

. plus it actually so uncomfortably warm here that I would be almost willing to bare with anybody right now ;)

I LOVE the Alot. I am no longer going to be annoyed by this.

ClockWatchingLady · 02/08/2013 15:24

Seriously, what's wrong with poor spelling as long as it's comprehensible? What's language for?

Sorry - realise this is not massively in the spirit of things Grin

LilacBreastedRoller · 02/08/2013 15:26

Strangle them with your bear hands.

millyrainbow · 02/08/2013 15:56

Dyslexia is not an excuse, I am dyslexic and I know it means I need take extra care and proof read everything. I've even been known to get the dictionary out when I write a text message! I have had to learn how to cope with my dyslexia and it annoys me when it is used as an excuse.
Sorry for the rant!
