OMG Bear and Bare

carben · 02/08/2013 13:28

To be pissed off with people not being able to tell the difference between bear / bare. It's hardly rocket science. If I see 'bare with me' one more time ....I clearly need to stop skulking in the kitchen on mumsnet and get out and have some quality time with the kids.

OP posts:

Aloud and Allowed! That bloody girl band have a lot to answer for! Grin
As for Bear and Bare (I'm now going to out myself massively! and don't really care!) my surname is Bear and the number of people who can't get it right - bah!

iloveweetos · 02/08/2013 16:05

I agree with squoosh, i always have to think when using bear/bare

FruOla · 02/08/2013 16:08

I saw something on a thread this morning where a poster had said :

"and that is NOT ASSEPTABLE"

I couldn't work out whether that poster is Jo Frost, Super Nanny (in RL), posted that as a joke or ...... what??

I decided not to comment.

pianodoodle · 02/08/2013 16:18

I saw an episode of Super Nanny once where the child said to her "that's not even correct grammar" lol!

SoniaGluck · 02/08/2013 16:28

I'm not dyslexic but I am out of the habit of writing very much these days. I now find that words that I could easily have spelled a few years ago as a matter of course now give me pause. I actually have to think about how to spell quite common words. I also have to look up more words than I used to and check the spelling.

A clear case of use it or lose it, I suppose.

specialsubject · 02/08/2013 16:31

I saw a picture of a gravestone for a child with the your/you're mix up on it.

no, of course I didn't say anything - but I would HAVE hoped that the stonemason would have sorted it out.

on a lighter note, a lot of this is the smartphones that run away with predictive text.

GalaxyDefender · 02/08/2013 17:25

I love that you got two posts before someone trotted out the old "but what about dyslexics?" that inevitably pops up on these threads.

I accept that my irritation with this sort of thing comes from the fact that spelling is important to me as well as being easy. I imagine people have the same rage at me when I fail at numeracy Grin But OP, I share your pain. Simple mistakes like these make me rage!

valiumredhead · 02/08/2013 17:37

It's the use of smart phones, you post before you even have a chance to proof read.

tiggerpigger · 02/08/2013 17:37

"Try and" instead of "try to" annoys me

Capitola · 02/08/2013 17:46

I love that Hyperbole site, but I've never seen that 'Alot' page Grin. MN these days is full of grammatical errors, it never used to be .

CredulousThicko · 02/08/2013 17:54

Ha, I'm not going to link to the DM, but their front page is currently carrying a corker of an advert for WHSmith/DM collaboration, apparently you will be able to get money off 'stationary' at WHSMith. Sheesh, you would think they could employ proofreaders.

Stationary: standing still.

Stationery: the E is for Envelope.

Come on DM or we might start thinking you're not a top quality newspaper. Oh, wait....

I wonder how long it will take to be changed.

Bearbehind · 02/08/2013 17:55

It annoys me too, hence my user name!

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/08/2013 20:02

oh yes, the other one: Things are different FROM other things, not different to.

Shinyshoes1 · 02/08/2013 20:04

It's like when someone agrees with you and says

Here here
It grates on my every nerve

On route
Fucking hate that'

YouTheCat · 02/08/2013 20:09

I only get pedantic with people who hoik their pants up over other peoples' spelling and grammar mistakes.

In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

Gruntled · 02/08/2013 20:16

I can't stand would of and could of . My number one gripe is replies beginning "erm"

Gingefringe · 02/08/2013 20:24

My son's teacher showed me an essay he'd written where he'd used "doing it with my bear hands" by mistake - we both had a chuckle at the thought of his massive hairy hands!!

candycoatedwaterdrops · 02/08/2013 20:26

I wouldn't common on someone's spelling or grammar on a site like this but I might suggest that posting with some punctuation and capital letters is a good idea. It's not about having every comma in the right place (heaven knows, I make mistakes!) but incredibly long sentences and no capitals make reading stuff quite hard IMO.

Peachyjustpeachy · 02/08/2013 20:28

Bloody autocorrect!

iago · 02/08/2013 21:21

Discusting - aargh!

mrslyman · 02/08/2013 21:48

In real life when I'm writing I use my 'proper' head voice, words are clearly enunciated and sentences are properly constructed which leads to good grammar and spelling. When I write in chat rooms like this, I'm using my 'conversational' head voice so mistakes are much more likely to slip through. I'd assumed it was the same for others so tend to ignore such things in this context.

Ok, that is deletable, so now I will explain.

The 'dyslexia card,' as you so charmingly call it, is people making reference to the fact they have a learning disability.

It's not great fun for them.

I'm not sure why you feel you deserve people to overcome a disability and pretend they don't have it, just so you can feel comfortable?

I am feeling picky, btw. I've just handed in a PhD thesis in English Literature, which I know (because I have re-read it) has quite a lot of dyslexic typos and errors in it. But it has far, far fewer than it otherwise would have because a bunch of lovely MNers took the time to help me find the ones I'd have been most likely to make. I felt confident to ask for help on here because it'd been a while since I'd seen a nasty, prejudiced comment about dyslexia.

Seems I got confident too soon, doesn't it?
