It's sexist. Please stop using it.

Especially when referring to women.

Thank you.

Oh I don't like it because its just the modern face of 'pull yourself together', which is usually meant unkindly...

SugarandSpice126 · 22/07/2013 11:55

I. HATE. IT!!! I usually get laughed at if I object publicly, but I don't think it's a petty objection. Similar reaction with 'grow some balls' and similar. It's essentially saying be as strong as a real man. I'm strong as a woman, thank you very much!

Lottapianos · 22/07/2013 11:58

Agree OP, it's sexist and nasty and pathetic. I know someone who says it to her teenage daughter Hmm. She is a total muppet though!

MardyBra · 22/07/2013 11:58

Yes, I don't need balls Sugar. betty white on growing a vagina

I usually say 'no, surely you need to woman up!' to my women friends friends if I hear them using 'just man up' to each other. I don't like the implication that only men are strong and we should strive to be like them in times of crisis. It seems minor but makes me cross too. So yanbu.

mrstigs · 22/07/2013 12:00

I say 'grow a vagina' too. Grin

MardyBra · 22/07/2013 12:21

Good. IANBU.

TheVermiciousKnid · 22/07/2013 12:25

Absolutely, Mardy! YANBU.

JuliaScurr · 22/07/2013 12:27

TheVermiciousKnid · 22/07/2013 12:30

And the same goes for being a big girl's blouse.

katolla · 22/07/2013 12:34

I hate man up. I use harden up.

DoJo · 22/07/2013 12:35

How about 'cowboy up'? (Or cowboy the fuck up as it is more often used).

martini84 · 22/07/2013 12:37

Yanbu. Someone on another thread suggested that a 5 year old should man up. Crazy. Just like grow a pair.

MardyBra · 22/07/2013 12:37

I've never heard of cowboy up.

In fact, I only really hear man up on MN/FB.

We use "get your game face on", i.e. sort your head out and get involved rather than whinging on. I think it's from American football. Doesn't sound that nice now I've written it down! At least it's not sexist...

CitrusSunshine · 22/07/2013 12:44

Is this a thread about a thread?

Yes it is sexist and a bit annoying but I think there are worse expressions. I hate "grow a pair"!!

MardyBra · 22/07/2013 13:18

"Is this a thread about a thread?"

No it's not. I did see it earlier on something but I can't remember which thread it was tbh. Do you have something in mind?

I also loathe 'grow a pair'. If you mean breasts, I already have a magnificent pair. If you mean testicles, I have absolutely no wish to grow them.

PeanutButterMmm · 22/07/2013 14:00

People love the idea of men having feminine traits but when a man either acts like "a woss" or acts "like a woman" so to speak woman hate it and want them to "man up." They can't win.

martini84 · 22/07/2013 15:10

It was on the thread about a mum wanting to keep her little girl (reception) off school as she was shattered. Etc. Someone said dd should man up.
I guess that could have prompted this thread.

martini84 · 22/07/2013 15:11

O sorry op. Just read your update.

squoosh · 22/07/2013 15:12

'run like a girl'

'throw like a girl'

'cry like a girl'

bobbywash · 22/07/2013 15:21

Squoosh

I really don't have a problem with throw like a girl, the shoulder configuration is different in women and men, hence the difference in throwing action, and why usually women do not throw as far.

As for the others in the thread, if they are said between men then they (man up and grow a pair) are OK if they are used across gender, my only question is why

squoosh · 22/07/2013 15:23

Had no idea we had different shoulders!
