It's sexist. Please stop using it.

Especially when referring to women.

Thank you.

My husband uses it about himself in relation to sport - eg. if he has a bad race he says he has to 'man up' next time.

I and my female friends will use 'woman up' or 'wtfu' when we mean similar.

A marathon running podcast I listen to talks about 'zipping up your mansuit' and most women change this to 'womansuit'... to refer to that point in a longrun/marathon where you want to stop and force yourself onwards.

I don't mind them in that context but I agree the term is overused when talking about ordinary life.

I don't like the expression at all. Big girl's blouse is even worse. Awful. They seem to have taken the place of wimp, get a grip, don't be a baby and so on. Grow a pair is dreadful too. I feel quite cross and irritated even reading about this. And then with the combination of full moon and heat. Angry Off to look for a cheerful thread!

YANBU, it's horrible and only a phrase I've read on here, never heard it in rl. Someone was telling a 5 year old child to man up on a thread yesterday Hmm

NoComet · 22/07/2013 17:38

YANBU, it's patronising, sexist and plain nasty.

Anyone who says "throws like a girl" should be forced to watch the wonderful Sophie Hitchon setting the British women's hammer record:

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/athletics/23021492

Then they will realise that "throws like a girl" is a serious compliment.
