FIRST WORLD PROBLEM ALERT

I hate packing for the summer holidays. Am right in the middle of it now. Still got a load of washing to hang out and another load to wash tomorrow (thank God for the hot weather). We leave the house Tuesday morning 9am, which is quite civilised and for that I am hugely grateful.

Two weeks in a hot country with a modest baggage allowance but staying in a place with a washing machine.

What do you pack per person?

Please share with me and make me a happy Mintyy Flowers.

I feel your pain!!!! We go 6am on Friday but DH is away from tomorrow until Thurs eve so looks like I will be packing for everyone! We are driving to France so I think I will be slinging everything and anything in our estate car and hoping for the best!

However in your situation: sun tan lotion, calpol, any other Meds, clean pants, t shirts, shorts, a jumper or two, swimming cossies, hats, favourite toys, etc. anything you forget you can buy. Are self catering? If so there will probably being a washing machine which could help you take less. (Although you may not want to do Washing on holiday- I never mind.)

Hope that's helpful.

Rushyswife · 21/07/2013 18:25

Sorry just seem there is a washing machine, in which case I would only pack 5-7 days worth of clothes per person.

starsandunicorns · 21/07/2013 18:28

Are you flying if so I would always pack swim cossys and armbands in hand luggue so that dc would be able to get the swimming asap without whinning for mum or dad to unpack

MelanieCheeks · 21/07/2013 18:30

wot I wore on my hols

If it's a hot country, how is it for mosquitoes and the like? Sunhat definitely, suncream, aftersun, anti-bug stuff, and you might like some light long sleeved shirts and longer trousers for evenings. Will you be swimming? A sarong/ saress/ kaftan thing to wear over swimsuit is handy.

Mintyy · 21/07/2013 18:31

Thanks Rushy! I don't mind doing washing on holiday. Would rather do that than try and wash and pack 14 days worth of clean clothes for the four of us. I imagine that's actually impossible!

Lots more tops than bottoms, and more extra underwear than anything. With our DC it's easy, when they're not in school uniform we need every bit of clothing they own! DH is our problem, he ridiculously overpacks (NINE long-sleeved shirts and FOUR pairs of brogues for a five day beach holiday???) but it seems equally absurd for me to pack for him.

Actually I love planning the packing. Make lists weeks in advance. DH thinks it's my favourite part of most holidays. He may be right, but then he's not the one doing laundry on holiday. Wink

motherinferior · 21/07/2013 18:34

Ooh, don't pack for them, Mintyy. They're all quite competentGrin spare yourself the hassle!

V envious btw we don't go till 10 Aug!

MrsSchadenfreude · 21/07/2013 18:40

Our next door neighbour always used to go on holiday to Spain for two weeks with two carrier bags of "luggage" for her, her DH and two sons. Her reasoning was that as they were going to spend all of their time in the sea, on the beach or at the pool, that they didn't need much. They all wore flipflops, travelled in shorts, T shirt, sweatshirt and took swimmers, extra shorts, a few T shirts and minimal underwear.

iamadoozermum · 21/07/2013 18:46

For 1 week per child I am taking: 3 short sleeved tops, 3 long sleeved tops, 1 pair joggers, 2 pairs shorts, 1 pair trousers, 1 pyjamas, 1 nice shirt, 14 pants, 7 socks, 1 jumper, 2 swimming costumes and 2 pairs of shoes. I can get clothes for all four into a 24.5x17.5 inch suitcase.

FauxFox · 21/07/2013 18:48

2 x swim costumes each
7 x t-shirts/vest tops each
3 x shorts/skirts each
1 x trousers each (wear on journey?)
1 x hoodie/cardi/jumper each
3 x PJs each for DCs
1 x naice outfit each
10 x pants each

I have a list I update/save on the computer each year that helps me remember everything we need. I add names against the side of the main luggage items and then tick off when that item is fully packed. If you have a washing machine just take less of each item.

For hand luggage we have:

Tickets, passports, money
Insurance stuff
Nintendo?s, kindle, books, tablets, headphones, chargers, toys
Sweets, chewing gum

Mini deodorant
Baby wipes
Sunglasses/glasses
Camera

For main luggage we have:

Underwear (pants, bras, boxers, etc)
Swimwear (trunks, bikinis)
Goggles
Shorts
Trousers
T-shirts/vests
Shirts
Skirts
Dresses
Dressy Tops

Leggings
Sandals
Make up, face wipes, moisturiser
Sun cream, aftersun
Insect repellent, plug in insect killer, Adaptor plugs, Hairdryer, hairspray, brush, bobbles
Shower gel, puff, shampoo and conditioner, razor, shaving gel, toothbrushes, toothpaste
Anti-diarrhoea tablets, dioralyte, calpol, nurofen, piriton, bite and sting cream, paracetamol, ibuprofen, anti-histamines, nasal spray, indigestion tablets, plasters, hand foam, baby wipes, towels, travel wash, tissues, tweezers, nail clippers, moist wipes, floss

Do you lot really do other people's packing? My kids have done their own packing for about 3 years now at least - they are 10 and 12 and would be outraged if I tried to pack for them. And obviously I don't do DP's - why would I?

ilovepowerhoop · 21/07/2013 18:57

I pack for the kids (they are 6 and 9) but let dh pack his own - he tells me what he has packed and I tick it off the list.

ilovepowerhoop · 21/07/2013 18:58

p.s. the kids get to choose toys, games, etc but I make sure they have enough of the other stuff to do them for the duration of the holiday. Have not had any complaints so far

motherinferior · 21/07/2013 19:01

I hate packingGrin and can't really be arsed about the contents of other people's.

MrsKeithRichards · 21/07/2013 19:07

Oh is it 'don't pack for your dp, you're not his mother/slave/your infantlising him/is he 7?' time of year already'

motherinferior · 21/07/2013 19:10

I just find it a bit odd

ilovepowerhoop · 21/07/2013 19:18

I'd rather everyone had everything they needed with them and dont care if it sounds odd (although I dont physically do dh's packing I do have a list of what he should take)

Mintyy · 21/07/2013 19:42

I don't pack for dh, but I do for the children.

You are a finer person than I am, MintyyGrin but we knew that anyway.

Fluffy1234 · 21/07/2013 19:58

For 2 weeks summer holiday I pack 7 bikinis, 7 day time sun dresses, 7 outfits for the evening, a couple of sightseeing outfits such as shorts Nd vest tops, couple of pairs of flip-flops and comfy sandals usually gold and silver, far to many hair accessories and knickers. Some of the day dresses i may wear in the evening with nice accessories. For DS's about 10 t shirts each, a couple of pairs of 3/4 length trousers and about 3 pairs of shorts. I've never stayed anywhere with a washing machine but I find it helps to not wear any of the clothes you want to pack from about 5 days before to avoid the last minute panic washing.

FriskyHenderson · 21/07/2013 19:59

I don't so much pack for DH as go through his stuff to make sure he hasn't got 10 tshirts when everyone else has 2.

Justforlaughs · 21/07/2013 20:12

I don't pack for DH, DC's are given a list to collect, 7 sets of underwear and socks, 4 t-shirts, 4 shorts/ skirts/ trousers, sunhat, jumper and waterproof jacket, 2 swimming costumes and a towel. Toothbrush. 2 pairs of shoes/ footwear.
I pack suncream, shower gel and shampoo, toothpaste, toilet rolls (VERY IMPORTANT if you are self catering!), any kitchen equipment you need, washing up liquid etc and my own clothes. That's it really.

ilovepowerhoop · 21/07/2013 20:13

I only took 3 bikinis (as I only own 3!). Take plenty of undies for the kids as mine ended up wearing pants in bed rather than pj's as they were too hot otherwise so I had to handwash some.

magimedi · 21/07/2013 20:14

Either DH or I packs as we split the stuff between the two cases.

So if one case gets lost we each have our own stuff.

I don't double up tweezers, scissors etc but the rest is evenly split.

Individual cases = recipe for disaster!
