To be fed up with the nurse-bashing going on here this weekend

Just that really.

Most of us are hard working people who do our best to remember everyone's name and not eat kettle chips when we should have a broom up our arses to ensure we don't slack

I just want to be treated with respect as I do my patients and do my job.

Every nurse I have ever dealt with has been great.

I have tremendous respect for this profession.

I think all of us who work within the NHS want that fled but nurses are frontline staff and it only takes a few bad 'uns to alter the public perception unfortunately.

Me too! I work so hard (along with every other nurse I know) threads like the ones on here over the weekend make me wonder why I bother. I've just finished another manic shift, with no break and very few staff. I really havn't stopped the whole shift and not even a sniff of a kettle chip yet people here think I'm a lazy, skiving, uncaring good nothing.

Nurses are brilliant and anyone who says they aren't (because of a couple of bad 'uns) is a prize twat and should be forced to go private.

Whenever I've been in hospital, the nurses have been incredible. I'll never forget the lovely nurse who let me sob away on her shoulder at 3am after miscarrying when I'm sure she had a million different things she needed to be doing.

Glad I'm not alone. Off to bed now as didn't finish until 10pm tonight and no I didn't get a meal break either as we've been busy and short staffed as normal

I am a teacher and just pleased that we're getting a weekend off the bashing!
Absolutely agree, think the majority of nurses do a wonderful job in extremely difficult circumstances.

Nhs wards are woefully understaffed, particularly at night. Even with that pressure my experience of nurses (two years of my mum being an inpatient and outpatient due to leukaemia) has been very good and caring.

I don't understand the nurse bashing this weekend - surely bash those pointless middle managers in the nhs who create the staffing problems and are paid rather more than nurses? Or the idiots who employ insanely expensive management consultants to tell them how to run a trust when they should really know how to do that already?! Argh.

I think you've every right to feel aggrieved by it. If it's any consolation, having read a couple of the threads, I now have an even greater level of respect for nurses than before. I had no idea what long shifts you worked without a break or a chance to eat. I am appalled that the people we entrust to care for us and our families at our most vulnerable are doing so under such unacceptable conditions. So and and as many bloody crisps as you can carry to you and your colleagues.

I've had experience of bad and unprofessional nurses however i dont believe it means everyone should slag off all nurses. In every job there will allways be someone who isn't working how they should but doesnt mean you all should get a bad name. Iv also met some really great nurses. You do a huge tiring job with hardly any break. I could not do your job

People judge on their experience, there are a lot of good nurses but many bad, rude, uncaring, unprofessional and if you're in hospital and come across one or several of them, that is what you'll remember.

I don't think those who post with a view have any idea what working for the NHS front line staff involves.

I have worked in the NHS for 10 years and I never seen a lazy nurse and i work on every ward in the hospital i work in.

Yeah, it's a real shame. I feel the same about the bashing the teachers get. Any one of the culprits should walk a mile in your/their shoes and see how bloody good they are at it all.

I have every sympathy for you guys , being in another profession that takes a huge amount of flack, is very demanding yet everyone thinks they could do better than you ( if they could be arsed to do the shift work ) .

I've been personally blamed so far for Hillsborough , and the miners strike . Even though I was about six years old when the miners strike happened , and not even a police officer when Hillsborough happened . And yet because of those two events , I must of course be a lying oppressive doughnut eating unfit overpaid paramilitary wannabe thug . That's why I don't tell many people what I do , because when I do that , I just know the next words will be 'I got stopped once by a right wanker of a copper , all because I was doing 50 in a 20 past a school on my phone . I mean , he could have been out catching burglars or robbers or sum fink . '

Actually lots of people get bashed on here - nurses, teachers, doctors, child minders, cleaners, delivery drivers, builders, social workers etc.

I think it's just that people notice their own profession being bashed more than others because it's close to their heart.

I think the vast majority of nurses do a great job. Like any other profession there will be some that don't. As long as you know you're doing the best you can then ignore it all.

I'm a nurse and I'm proud of what I do.

I watch the nurses with awe in work.

I have been there when things get very tough. I have work ICU HDU CCU sbcu and those are tough ( trying cleaning around machines you dont understand) the nurses and NA do such a fantastic job.

Was in hospital recently and all the nurses were wonderful.

In fact I've been wondering how I can say thank you to the a and e staff and ward staff that helped me - can any of the nurses on this thread tell me what the nurses would like?

Eg would it be best to write to the hospital manager giving them positiv feedback (I'd do that for a good shop assistant but don't know if it makes any difference to appraisals etc in the nhs?) or can I drop off a tin of biscuits or something for them? My friend says nhs staff can't accept gifts as they might be bribes....

fledtoscotland - I have to say that there is a bit of problem in this country at the moment with a lack of respect for professionals. Doctors are equally disrespected. As are lawyers (maybe there is a reason for that one).
