neighbours toking in their garden

I don't have any beef with adults having a spliff but the smell of cannabis is wafting pretty strongly into my garden and even into my house on these still summer evenings. I have a young child and it just pisses me off. Would I be unreasonable to ask them to smoke in their house instead?

MalcolmTuckersMum · 08/07/2013 20:46

It dissipates into the air and cannot possibly harm your child. Is that what you are worried about?

persimmon · 08/07/2013 20:47

No, it's the smell of drugs that pisses me off. Smell is the most evocative of the senses and I don't want DS to remember summers as the smell of weed.

TheFallenNinja · 08/07/2013 20:51

Ah, summers that smelt of weed. Takes me back.

Just try asking them. See how you go.

Dolallytats · 08/07/2013 20:58

Persimmon, I have the same issue. I have a couple of neighbours that smoke on their balconies and it stinks out my entire flat. I really don't care if they want to smoke it, I do however get peeved that I have to smell it when I choose not to do it.

TiggyD · 08/07/2013 21:10

It's a nice smell.

TheFallenNinja · 08/07/2013 21:16

It's a valid peeve. Are they friendly to talk to?

It's not a nice smell if you don't smoke weed though TiggyD

We have some one round here who smokes it and I honestly didn't know what it was, I was banging on to everyone about 'what's that horrible smell' DS1 and his friends informed me what it was

Not want you want to be smelling.

It is illegal yes? so I'd ask them to move indoors or down the garden

sandiy · 08/07/2013 22:29

Loud voice to husband with windows open.Oh bloody he'll hubby dearest you hav nt invited your friend bob over have you? You know he's in the drug squad and will be arresting whoever it is smoking thae pot in the garden.Job done hopefully.

pleiadianpony · 08/07/2013 22:36

quoteunquote I'm tempted to immediately go and plant all those flowers and plants in my garden! And I don't even have pot-smoking neighbours.

I would get fed up having to smell someone else's weed smoke. Find it sickly and horrible smell if it's smoked heavily. Light smoking i don't mind. Definitely wouldn't want my children smelling it.

persimmon · 09/07/2013 19:36

Thanks for your replies. They seem very nice and I think it's the dad that smokes. Ten years ago I wouldn't have cared but I can't help but not want my 6yo to be familiar with the smell.

TabithaStephens · 09/07/2013 19:39

Ring the police!

ScarletLady02 · 09/07/2013 19:42

I'd probably just have a word. Say that you can really smell it and maybe someone not quite so understanding will be able to smell it and may call the police.

AwkwardSquad · 09/07/2013 20:15

"It's a nice smell"? No, it isn't - not the stuff my neighbour smokes, it's rank. But then so is he.

pictish · 09/07/2013 20:16

Ahhhh....summers that smell of weed.

mamapants · 09/07/2013 20:21

Don't phone the police. Bit harsh Tabitha

somewheresomehow · 09/07/2013 21:38

sorry but its their garden and their choice

IndigoCat · 09/07/2013 21:41

Isn't it still ilegal?

CaptainJamesTKirk · 09/07/2013 21:45

It's not their garden their choice where illegal drug use is concerned. It's not like they're mowing the bloody lawn, having a loud conversation etc... I would call the police.

CaptainJamesTKirk · 09/07/2013 21:49

And yes to the poster who asked, it is illegal, it's a class B drug.

expatinscotland · 09/07/2013 21:50

It wouldn't bother me.

Mumsyblouse · 09/07/2013 21:53

I don't like the smell at all, it's not a really lovely pleasant smell, not as bad as cigarette smoke but not as nice as lovely pipe tobacco (which you hardly ever smell these days).

SmallSherryforMedicinal · 09/07/2013 21:55

Live and let live. You could have a lot worse next door. Screaming fighting drunk dog-baiting thugs

Your ds won't notice. If he does tell him it's burning leaves.

Jmo

NinaJade666 · 09/07/2013 21:57

I'd just tell them it's coming in your house and you don't want little un smelling it. Hint at moving to the end of the garden or inside.

I love the smell personally, but I wouldn't want to be smelling it in my garden because I'd be more than jealous!

(Don't smoke it anymore you see, responsible parent now innit..) Booo...!

WorraLiberty · 09/07/2013 21:57

Jesus you should have been in my house about 7pm tonight

I don't know what the fuck next door were cooking but it smelled vile. I mean really gut wrenchingly disgusting.

We had to close the doors and windows for an hour or so and we could still smell it.

But that's part and parcel of living in a semi detached house on the end of a row of terraced houses.

Unless we can all retreat to the countryside and live in completely detached houses, what can you do?

And even then, when the farmers spray the fields with shit, that's going to stink too.
