Should I tip the tesco delivery man? I haven't so far but don't know if it is the done thing (or allowed by tesco) to tip.

While I'm on the subject of tipping, what is standard tipping amount for a haircut? Is £2 stingy or ok (on £35 cut).

gordyslovesheep · 02/07/2013 16:56

no

15%

2cats2many · 02/07/2013 16:57

Don't tip the Tesco man.

I usually give £5 for a haircut. It costs around £45.

OhTheConfusion · 02/07/2013 17:04

I don't tip the sainsburys man.

I leave a 10% tip at the hairdressers.

Although a friend and I just went out for lunch with our kids (2 adults, 5 kids, 1 baby). The bill came to £101 so we put in £60 each it was only on the way home we realised no one had been given the change.... we would have left a tip but not £19 Angry.

MamaChubbyLegs · 02/07/2013 17:07

You have to tip for a haircut? Shock what if you dont like it?

Not that this affects me, my last visit to the hairdressers was a decade ago.

I'd tip the tesco man. I tip takeaway deliverers and taxi drivers too. I thought it was the done thing!

BackforGood · 02/07/2013 17:08

No

I don't tip my hairdresser either - she's self employed so can charge what she chooses / needs to make a living.

Moomoomie · 02/07/2013 17:14

That happened to us at a restaurant recently too. Ohtheconfusion.
There were four of us and they did not return the change. We actually asked for it and got such a filthy look. We still left a tip, although if it was up to me I wouldn't have done!

OhTheConfusion · 02/07/2013 18:29

Moomie, I wish I had realised but I was busy putting DD in her pushchair etc and only realised when we were at the park afterwards. I guess you live and learn!

SkinnybitchWannabe · 02/07/2013 19:43

I don't tip my hairdresser. I sometimes do in restaurants, only if they give great service.

Yamyoid · 02/07/2013 19:51

I tip hairdressers, taxi drivers, takeaway delivery people and 10% to waiters. Never thought about tescos delivery people but I would give them a quid I reckon.
It's a good thing to do for people in the service industry, giving a token of your appreciation.

Yamyoid · 02/07/2013 19:54

ohtheconfusion just think, that extra £4.50 each, which isn't a huge amount when you're having a £100 lunch, might have really cheered up a lovely waiter having a rubbish day.

ceramicunicorn · 02/07/2013 19:56

Bloody hell I never even considered tipping the hairdresser. No wonder she never talks to me. Is that really the done thing?. I tip in restaurants and taxi drivers but that's it.

WLmum · 02/07/2013 20:01

I don't tip my hairdresser either, as someone else said its his business so he decides what to charge.

Always tip 10./. In restaurants unless its awful.

HandMini · 02/07/2013 20:06

Always tip restaurants, taxis, takeaway delivery.

Tip hairdresser depending in service - unfortunately I've had a few bad experiences of being shunted around basins, left with towel on head for 15 minutes, hairdresser wandering off to someone else that I'm now quite particular about it.

I've never tipped any supermarket delivery person.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 02/07/2013 20:07

I tip in restaurants, that's it. I resent the tip automatically being added to the bill.

Thepursuitofhappiness · 02/07/2013 20:10

Sounds like I should consider upping my hairdresser tip.
Maybe Ill start the tesco delivery tip if it rains.

reggiebean · 02/07/2013 20:14

No, I don't tip the groceries delivery men, but always tip takeaway delivery men.

Hairdressers I tip a fiver normally, taxi drivers I just round up and give them change, servers I tip depending on how nice the restaurant is (10-25%), bartenders I only tip at places like B@1, or fancy cocktail bars where they actually have to have skills to make you a drink, not just pull a tap.

morningsarepants · 02/07/2013 20:21

I don't tip my hairdresser each time but I do give her something at Xmas - up to £20 depending on how flush I'm feeling. But then I only go about 4 or 5 times a year (the joys of long hair Grin)
I do the standard 10% in restaurants but tipping taxis seems mad to me - they're so expensive anyway. But DH tips all the time - I just don't get it.

soaccidentprone · 02/07/2013 20:24

I tip at the hairdressers, but it's only £18 so I leave £20 and so the young woman who washes my hair(Amy) gets £2. It only takes 20 mins to wash, cut and dry my hair, and the hairdresser is self employed, so I think £54 for an hours work is good going (yes I know she has overheads etc, but it's a small suburban salon) and at Christmas I give her and Amy £10 each.

I tip in restaurants and Cafes according to the service I get, so if I spent £25 on a meal and it was great service I'd tip £5, but crap service I wouldn't tip at all.

And I wouldn't tip a delivery driver, but I do tip cabbies, and I give our window cleaner £10 extra at Christmas. I usually give our postman a box of chocolates.

apostropheuse · 02/07/2013 20:26

No I don't tip the supermarket delivery drive. The thought never entered my head!

I give the hairdresser a couple of pounds and a pound to the girl who washes my hair.

ThedementedPenguin · 02/07/2013 20:45

I don't tip anyone.

Maybe very occasionally in a really great restaurant, although I don't eat out that much.

WhoNickedMyName · 02/07/2013 20:46

I tip at a restaurant.

What do people think about tipping a hairdresser if she's the salon owner and the hair-do cost nearly £90? Should I tip her?

theoriginalandbestrookie · 02/07/2013 21:32

I don't tip the delivery driver - have paid for the service already.

Hairdresser £3 for £37 haircut, £5 for highlights at £80 - can't bring myself to tip more than that.

Restaurant - 10%

Taxis - round up to nearest pound or up so for £18.50 up I'd round it up to £20.

I put £5 in an envelope for our postie, I would put in £10 but DH thinks its too much.

livinginwonderland · 02/07/2013 21:38

I don't tip anyone. Delivery drivers (for supermarkets) can't accept tips.

Lweji · 02/07/2013 21:38

I have never tipped the supermarket delivery men.
They have often been great, but never acted as if it might be expected.
I often round up taxi bills, and hairdressers, unless they own the salon, and give an extra pound to take away delivery men.

NicknameIncomplete · 02/07/2013 22:11

I dont tip. Anyone. Ever.

I dont like it at all. As OP has suggested there are so many questions - do i tip this person or that person? How much do i tip?
