To hate parents who don't wear socks at soft play

There were four of them this morning, and I asked them all if they knew they were supposed to wear socks. One said she was just running on to pick up her daughter who had been pushed by a boy. Fair enough, but does your verruca/athletes foot know that? Of the other three, two gave me evils for the rest of the session and one ignored me and went back on with bare feet so I asked the staff to have a word.

Is it me being an officious twat or should adults follow health and safety rules where children are involved?

I've been in that situation. Me and OH took 3yo to softplay with the agreement that he would run in after him if there was trouble, as I'm pregnant and my feet are for some odd reason getting really hot as well as swollen, so I didn't want to wear socks, just some flipflops.

OH popped to the toilet and DS fell on his face. I had the choice of wearing my flipflops (which are undoubtedly dirtier than my feet) or take them off and quickly go get him. I chose the latter. I know the rules, and I agree with you it's not pleasant, but if you'd tutted at me and told me off I'd have probably glared at you too. You ain't the softplay police!

Plus I doubt the ladies' feet would make a dent in the hardy layer of dirt and bacteria that covers every single surface of your average softplay tbh.

I always have 'softplaysocks' in my handbag because i prefer to wear them but I am too busy chasing three small DC's to notice anyone not wearing them!

Soft play involves many perils IMO, and frankly, my greatest joy of now having a 9 yr old is that I no longer have to go to them, but the fear of a non sock wearing adult has never featured highly tbh.

Do you tell people off on the beach as well?

If your children are wearing socks then they wont catch verrucas.

As someone who gets verrucas just by looking at a swimming pool, I'm with you. Horrible things.

YABU to waste such a strong emotion as hate on such a inconsequential happening.

Hate is a very strong word to use when someone is doing something which you find annoying.

There is nothing wrong with being annoyed, and reminding people of the rules, as long as you are pleasant about it.

I don't like soft play in general, they are often stuffy, noisy and overpriced. If you're worried about catching stuff I'd be more worried about gastroenteritis-type bugs, especially in ball pits, which are rarely properly washed and get dirty due to overflowing nappies and people not washing hands, a bit like a swimming pool with no chlorine which is rarely emptied.

Well you can catch warts and verrucas on your hands and other places too so that point doesn't really stand. Still being unreasonable though, it's the risk you take when taking your children to softplay.

Tbh I'm more concerned with what I haven't seen go on that what is happening in front of my face. These women are just barefoot, what about the kids who wipe their pooey hands on the slides?

I didn't know that this was the rule? There are no signs up. As I wear flip flops a lot I am guilty.

Could you get some hobbies?

God sometimes I'm that stressed out although I know I'm supposed to remember to wear them I get halfway there with two DCs under two and just think 'fuck it'. It was hard enough getting out in the first place! YABU.

thank you but I do have hobbies, I also like to follow rules of hygiene especially where children are concerned but apparently that makes me OCD.

It's the first time I've seen this at soft play so the majority of adults must know the rules.

I may be unusual because I would also stop and offer someone a poo bag if I spotted them not picking up in the park, but maybe some people just think standing in dogshit is a risk you run taking kids to the park

Another one who wears flip flops March - October and I would never think of taking socks with me. I definitely don't have athlete's foot or a verruca (if I did I would have the common sense to cover them up) and if somebody spoke to me about the lack of socks I would think they were actually mad and look at you a bit incredulously for the rest of the time because I can't think how somebody could get bothered about it.

I just assume those parents are to damn thick to read such a simple sign.

Then get on with life.

Does it matter? As long you're wearing socks and your children, then you're safe.

Well if I had only realised I didn't have to follow rules or be considerate of other people's health if it was inconvenient to me then my life would be a lot easier

The things you learn on mn! I've been frequenting soft plays for the best part of ten years now (more than one child) And never in all that time has not wearing socks (either adults or kids) ever entered my mind.

My kids have lays ended up taking off losing socks as they can climb better without them. Never entered my mind to care.
