To hate parents who don't wear socks at soft play

There were four of them this morning, and I asked them all if they knew they were supposed to wear socks. One said she was just running on to pick up her daughter who had been pushed by a boy. Fair enough, but does your verruca/athletes foot know that? Of the other three, two gave me evils for the rest of the session and one ignored me and went back on with bare feet so I asked the staff to have a word.

Is it me being an officious twat or should adults follow health and safety rules where children are involved?

I feel even more rabidly about non poop scooping dog owners

Pastel I will definitely leave it up to the staff next time!

probably

Well they should sell body condoms alongside their 50p socks then, 'cus softplay is basically a brightly coloured petri dish of nasty shit.

wonderingsoul · 28/06/2013 14:48

iv been to a couple that the rules where every one. adult or child who went on the equipment had to wear socks, they even sold them for .. £1.50 a pair..

i hate feet, so prefer to see socked feet. but i dont think i could bother myself of saying it to some one, never mind a staff member.

OneStepCloser · 28/06/2013 14:56

I like the way youve managed to throw in 2 AIBUs in one thread, veruccas and dog shit, what a combination Grin

Seriously though I should verrucas and athletes foot are contained onto the poor sufferers foot only once treatment is applied. Having had both i cant believe anyone would leave them untreated as they are both quite sore. So if you did see a bottom of the foot with a verucca chances are its being treated, but soft play is a party place for unsavioury lingering things. I`m sure someone on here once said they found a turd in amongst the balls Shock

rockybalboa · 28/06/2013 14:58

You don't catch verrucas from soft play. The verruca needs to be macerated (ie wet and soggy) to be infectious. I very much doubt you can catch athletes foot either. The socks are for safety not hygiene. If you are that paranoid about hygiene I would avoid soft play altogether!!!

LadyRabbit · 28/06/2013 14:59

OMG OP did I read that right - you removed your verruca yourself with a knife after a hot bath? Holy shit woman. I'm weirdly impressed.

WitchOfEndor · 28/06/2013 15:11

onestep I found a small poo nugget at soft play once, I thought it was a malteaser at first! It had been there overnight as we were the first in and I saw it right away [boak]

lady rabbit I could see it had a line around it so ran a sharpish knife round the edge and it just sort of flipped out. As soon as it was out I couldn't see where it had been iyswim. It was very satisfying.

megsmouse I also get annoyed about dog shit not being picked up. Is that an acceptable thing to get worked up about or am I over reacting with that too?

Not even in the same realm as people who leave dogshit lying around though.

LookMaw · 28/06/2013 15:43

Only read the first page. You lost me at comparing bare feet at soft play to treading in dog shit.

Eskino · 28/06/2013 15:43

"Well they should sell body condoms alongside their 50p socks then, 'cus softplay is basically a brightly coloured petri dish of nasty shit".

Agree!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/06/2013 15:55

I thought it was to stop toes catching in the netting and getting ripped off, nothing to do with hygiene. It also makes it harder for children to climb up slides. My two are too old for me to go in now, but if I didn't have socks I accepted liability for my own toe safety. I did make the DCs wear them though.

WitchOfEndor · 28/06/2013 15:56

But you would still have parents pretending not to know that body condoms had to be worn, or argue that they were dangerous because of the lubrication, or that it didn't match their outfit, or that they never had body condoms in their day and it didn't do them any harm.

I'm not being precious, but you are just supposed to wear sock, why is that so difficult to understand. What makes you so special?

And this comes from a child of the 70s who survived white dog shit in the park, no car seat, no stair gate etc

"hate"

whoaaaaaa, strong word OP

Feminine · 28/06/2013 15:59

Its the rule of all yucky soft plays I've ever gone to.

How are you ( that don't bother with socks) getting away with it?

Do you just ignore the very obvious signs?

Feminine · 28/06/2013 16:01

witch as a child of the 70's myself, I'm now wondering about the white dog shit...what was that all about? Grin

Quangle · 28/06/2013 16:01

witchofendor, it seems to be the case that you can't catch verrucas in this environment anyway so not sure why this is still an issue for you. There's a whiff of wanting to be right here, regardless of whether it matters.

Swimming is clearly much more of an issue but you don't bother to wear verruca socks there, because no one else does.

Quangle · 28/06/2013 16:02

I don't ignore the signs, usually. But I'm not in the soft play - I'm sitting round the edge, drinking coffee (huge Health and Safety issue alert) and ignoring the children.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/06/2013 16:03

It's not about being special, it's about the fact that my DCs always wear socks anyway and I don't from March to October, I would stick them in my bag if I remembered but I wasn't going to refuse to go in if the DCs wanted me to just because I'd forgotten the socks.

Feminine · 28/06/2013 16:03

My son caught a verruca last year, from somewhere.

He had to wear a sock for swimming!

Actually I have just remembered where he caught it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/06/2013 16:04

There's one small sign at ours and no staff supervision.

Feminine · 28/06/2013 16:05

Hmm, I guess its how they are set up then.

I've never escaped the whole sock notice!

:)

WitchOfEndor · 28/06/2013 16:10

fromparis I've already said that hate was too strong a word

feminine I think it was all the bone meal they bulked out dog food with. DDog has them when he eats bones. On the plus side they tended to be hard and crumbly so if you did slide on one in the park it didn't leave a lot of shit up your leg. dogshit aficionado

Every time I've been to soft play (which isn't often as I don't have kids of my own) an area has had to be cordoned off to clean up shit or vomit. There must be so much bacteria in the average soft play centre. Bare footers are more likely to pick something up themselves.
