The supreme caught has has struck down the Defense of Marriage Act as being unconstitutional and is refusing to rule on Prop 8 in California, which means the lower courts ruling that it's unconstitutional will stand, restoring gay marriage in California.

This ruling will stop the block on things like, federal and and immigration benefits for gay couples.

In short this a massive step forward for LGBTs in America, follow the news here

Congratulations America!

Go Team America! The DOM Act is awful. Had me in tears over a lovely couple forced to live apart, because they are gay. My DH has a different nationality to me and the thought of years of separation because of discrimination is horrible.

In other great news, Wendy Davis' filibuster and the debate and protests have worked. The anti-abortion bill in Texas hasn't passed. Great day for the States.

CrapsWithBears · 26/06/2013 15:50

Here is a better explanation of what DOMA was and what this decision means.

I followed the Wendy Davis' filibuster through an American abortion rights protester, overall it's been a good day for Americans! Well, apart from the social conservatives. Grin

The social conservatives can go whistle. I don't think the tide has turned but the fight back has certainly ramped up.

CrapsWithBears · 26/06/2013 15:55

Absolutely, they are on the wrong side of history and every step-forward is a victory for LGBTs as far as I am concerned. Grin

StuntGirl · 26/06/2013 15:56

That's brilliant news.

PunkHedgehog · 26/06/2013 15:57

Congratulations!

And Wendy Davis did amazing work with her fillibuster, too.

MadCap · 26/06/2013 15:59

Prop 8 is dead as a dodo too!

TheOldestCat · 26/06/2013 16:00

It's great news!

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 26/06/2013 16:05

It's really great news.

It's still horribly sad that it had to be ruled unconstitutional in the first place, and that Davies had to filibuster. Sorry, not trying to be a killjoy, just chatting with US friends and realizing how bad some things still are.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/06/2013 16:06

Craps it is a victory for everyone. LGBT people and all people who don't want to live in a stupid, discriminatory, illogical, mean-spirited world are better off today. Could I just post this so everyone remembers what we are hoping for? For love to be celebrated.

CrapsWithBears · 26/06/2013 16:07

Of course MrsTerryPratchett that's very true, thanks for the link.

AmberSocks · 26/06/2013 16:08

whats a filibuster?

CrapsWithBears · 26/06/2013 16:10

In short, it's when someone stands up and speaks for an extended amount of time to prevent or delay a vote. Explanation here.

madamginger · 26/06/2013 16:16

I was following Wendy Davies most of last night, 13 hours of none stop talking to stop a bunch of rich white men telling women what to do with their bodies.
I have no idea how she did it but she rocks

AgentProvocateur · 26/06/2013 16:21

Thanks for asking, Ambersocks. I was about to - glad I read the thread first.

And well done, USA. Hope Scotland's next to legalise gay marriage

weirdthing · 26/06/2013 16:24

Wendy Davies is a feminist icon. An utter hero.

squoosh · 26/06/2013 16:25

Wendy David is my hero. Don't think I've ever had one before.

I'm in awe of her.

squoosh · 26/06/2013 16:25

Davies! Sorry Wendy.

JamieandtheMagicTorch · 26/06/2013 16:28

Edie Winsor was the best test case possible.

Edie and Thea.

Her reaction to the news.

Justfornowitwilldo · 26/06/2013 16:37

Oops, that was earlier this year.

From what ive seen on google she blocked a bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks, personally that doesnt make me see her as a hero but each to their own.
