The supreme caught has has struck down the Defense of Marriage Act as being unconstitutional and is refusing to rule on Prop 8 in California, which means the lower courts ruling that it's unconstitutional will stand, restoring gay marriage in California.

This ruling will stop the block on things like, federal and and immigration benefits for gay couples.

In short this a massive step forward for LGBTs in America, follow the news here

Congratulations America!

Google is celebrating the defeat, search 'gay' and check out the toolbar. Go Google!

Absolutely not crying at MrsPratchetts link. Not even a little bit.

This is a brilliant day, inch by inch, equality will overcome.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/06/2013 16:57

Amber it is much more than that. The rules in this legislation would have reduced the working clinics in Texas from 42 to 5. In a State 5 times the size of our country. They were trying to stop abortion in Texas, not stop abortion after 20 weeks.

Here is a thread all about.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/06/2013 17:00

I love that link Hop. Shows that this is all about happy people doing what happy people do and share that happiness. None of those people getting married endangers my marriage. If anything, it strengthens it.

CrapsWithBears · 26/06/2013 17:02

Amber it was much more than that, it would have closed thirty-seven of the forty-two abortion clinics in Texas, all but ending women's access to abortion in Texas.
What was at stake.

I was bouncing around at work when I saw this news.

The US has come a long way in the last four years.

Jayne3474 · 29/06/2013 10:06

Wendy Davis was inspirational.

As regards the DOMA issue, people like Edie Windsor would have got their rights in a fraction of the time if a union had been available to gay couples that gave same financial and legal rights as marriage but had been called something else.

The obsession with the m-word is causing a lot of misery.

MalenkyRusskyDrakonchik · 29/06/2013 11:31

Just to add - amber, the proposals wouldn't just have made it difficult for people to have abortion for the reasons you might think of. If the clinics close, it also affects women who have severe health risks with continuing a pregnancy, or women whose babies have conditions incompatible with life. Basically, if there are fewer clinics in a big state, you'll have to travel (and have the money for it), and book into an over-pressured clinic. My impression is that's going to be very hard for a lot of women.
