...to think that chewing gum is really unattractive?

Lady sitting opposite me on the train the other day - pretty, well-groomed, but chewing gum with her mouth open - which, IMHO, made her look a lot less attractive.

I'm not against gum chewing per se; I don't like doing it myself, but each to their own. However, I can't help think that chewing it with the mouth open makes a person look gormless / arrogant / like they don't care / attitude-y. (Note I say it makes them appear like that, not that I think they are that.). I just think it's horrible!

I concur but I think you will be flamed Grin

I can't chew it for more than a few minutes or it makes me gag.

Bowlersarm · 09/06/2013 22:06

YANBU

I don't chew it much, but when I do my DSes always pull me up on it and say I chew too loudlyShock

So I never do it in public

It's something that really irritates me, I think it looks awful but as you say each to their own and my irritation is my problem not theirs.

YDdraigGoch · 09/06/2013 22:14

I had once a teacher who told my class that people chewing gum look like cows chewing the cud, and that image has never left me.
I can't see the point if gum. The flavour goes after about 30 seconds, and after that its like chewing rubber.
And why do people think its ok to drop it on the pavement?

miffybun73 · 09/06/2013 22:15

YANBU, it's revolting.

BarredfromhavingStella · 09/06/2013 22:16

I chew gum but not with my mouth open, YANBU.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 09/06/2013 22:16

It is one of the things I would un-invent if such a thing were possible

SleepyCatOnTheMat · 09/06/2013 22:19

I can't stand people smacking their lips as they do when they chew gum, it makes them sound like pigs at a trough and is the height of rudeness, so as far as I'm concerned YANBU.

EleanorFarjeon · 09/06/2013 22:20

YANBU

Anyone chewing gum with mouth agape looks like a cow chewing the cud, but less attractive.

Boomba · 09/06/2013 22:23

I chew gum all the time. It helps with my sinus problems

Don't care I'd anyone thinks I am gormless/look like a cow

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/06/2013 22:25

YANBU its minging to see.

TheSmallClanger · 09/06/2013 22:40

YANBU. The noise alone is a big enough case for banning it.

If anyone trying to sell me stuff is chewing gum at the same time, I am highly disinclined not to buy.

squoosh · 09/06/2013 22:43

YANBU.

It's so bovine.

Quangle · 09/06/2013 22:49

Agree. It's awful. It's one of those horrible things that just sets my teeth on edge. I know it shouldn't affect me and is none of my business but I think it's really horrible and I don't think chewers quite know what non-chewers think about it. I get that some don't care - and that's totally fair enough but for me it's a bit like when smokers come back from their fag break and don't realise that they stink of smoke.

I have never said this publicly though because it's obviously none of my business. I did hoick bosom though when for some reason some footballer's wedding was on the TV news and his mum was chewing through the service Shock

OTTMummA · 09/06/2013 23:06

I chew gum to help with my facial tick/anxiety it masks it somewhat, but not open mouthed, that's just unnecessary and lazy.

CruCru · 09/06/2013 23:08

I used to work with someone who chewed gum. I would show him something on the computer and he would lean over and chew in my ear. Rank.

snooter · 09/06/2013 23:12

Agree awful esp chewing with mouth open - bleurgh!

WinkyWinkola · 09/06/2013 23:14

Yanbu. It's ugly to see someone just gnashing the whole time. Sorry to those who use it to alleviate some ailments.

And then on the pavements, soles of shoes, clothes. Ick.

It gives me a tummy ache too.

thenightsky · 09/06/2013 23:15

Agree with OP... its 'attitude-ie'.

Mitchy1nge · 09/06/2013 23:17

I chew it pretty constantly, is helping me to not smoke I think. Plus there is something a bit wrong with my jaw, it keeps clenching by itself Confused so it's a sort of mouth guard too.

Mitchy1nge · 09/06/2013 23:17

hopefully not with my mouth open though

Mitchy1nge · 09/06/2013 23:20

actually I think the chewing gum is making my jaw do that

Ruffello · 09/06/2013 23:33

YANBU. I had to phone my local council a while back and the woman I spoke to was chewing the whole time. She took unprofessionalism to a whole new level!

tulipflowers · 09/06/2013 23:59

YANBU.. I despise it when people chew gum alday.. Horrible habit.. Though I do know some people are chewing to stop nicotine habit.. But they don't seem to have the same annoying chewing jaw as fun chewers!
