...to think that chewing gum is really unattractive?

Lady sitting opposite me on the train the other day - pretty, well-groomed, but chewing gum with her mouth open - which, IMHO, made her look a lot less attractive.

I'm not against gum chewing per se; I don't like doing it myself, but each to their own. However, I can't help think that chewing it with the mouth open makes a person look gormless / arrogant / like they don't care / attitude-y. (Note I say it makes them appear like that, not that I think they are that.). I just think it's horrible!

I invariably tell my students, just before making them put the gum in the bin: Chewing gum makes even an intelligent person look bovine.

bettycocker · 10/06/2013 08:27

YANBU. I started chewing it when I stopped smoking and it has become a habit now. I realise that some people find it objectionable, but it's still better than smoking and stinking of stale fags.

NoobyNoob · 10/06/2013 10:28

I use chewing gum, but don't chew with my mouth open. I find it helps a lot with my smoking cravings

yoshipoppet · 10/06/2013 10:31

Chewing anything open-mouthed is horrible. I don't mind gum as such and do chew it myself after I've eaten. It helps keep my teeth clean when I'm away from my toothbrush. But always, mouth closed!

Trills · 10/06/2013 10:43

I agree with you, I think it is unattractive (even with mouth closed).

It's silly to ask if it's unreasonable though. It's not reasonable or unreasonable to find something attractive or unattractive.

dufflefluffle · 10/06/2013 10:46

YANBU. I find it fascinating that you will see people turned out so well, having gone to huge effort to look good and then they chew gum Shock and even worse if it's with their mouths open. EWWWW!
My DC are not allowed gum and therefore it's all they ever want so we save it for very long journeys and they must dispose of it responsibly.
Vile stuff.

threesypeesy · 10/06/2013 10:51

YANBU it looks horrible, even worse when they just spit it out Yuk!!

bettycocker · 10/06/2013 10:54

I can't stop chewing it now, because I'm worried that I'll relapse back into smoking!

passmetheprozac · 10/06/2013 10:57

I absolutely agree with you op. What really gets me, as in I get the rage, is when people crack their gum. Angry

It just looks horrible, it sounds horrible and it smells horrible.

And it's bad for your stomach.

Ilikethebreeze · 10/06/2013 11:01

It is made of things that should not even go in anyone's mouth.
I know because I looked it up because one of my DDs likes chewing the awful stuff
She does chew nicely, but like someone upthread said, it would be great if it was uninvented.

Cant say though that I had thought it made anyone look unattractive.

KellyElly · 10/06/2013 11:50

Chewing gum or food with your mouth open is gross. However, someone chewing gum normally (i.e. mouth closed) is not something I'd even notice tbh. I would rather any type of chewing than someone inflicting their rotten breath on me Grin

msrisotto · 10/06/2013 12:10

OMG a woman doing something Unattractive! Shocker!

Honestly, I don't spend every waking moment of my life wondering whether what I am doing is attractive to others. Why would I? Why do you care?

WinkyWinkola · 10/06/2013 12:28

Not just women - everyone.

Boomba · 10/06/2013 12:54

I've been really conscious of my chewing today. I've made a concerted effort to make as much noise as I possibly can. But I do have an 'attitude', it is true. That all ties in nicely. Same reason I encourage dds to fart loudly in public

msrisotto · 10/06/2013 13:39

Winky - I was responding to the OP who specified a woman.

TheSmallClanger · 10/06/2013 14:23

Mitchy, I have that autoclamping jaw thing (it's something to do with cartilage popping out of somewhere, apparently), and was advised not to chew gum, as it would make it worse.

superlambanana · 10/06/2013 20:04

Glad I'm not totally unreasonable Grin

I think 'unattractive' was possibly the wrong word - I'm not meaning it in the being desirable sense. It wouldn't make a difference to me if it had been a man or a woman either!

I suppose the word my mum would use would be 'uncouth' Grin
