In thinking this is barking and a bit funny

So my brothers has an 18 month old DS, he has now decided that he will only watch The Singing Kettle DVDs as he doesn't want him growing up with an English or Anerican accent Grin as he's heard the little girl next door playing and she has an Anerican accent from watching Disney Junior.

In case you don't know The Singing Kettle are Scottish children's shows and you can buy DVDs of them, my brother is very antiEnglish so hates the idea of his DS having an English accent.

I told him that all children put on a voice when they are playing and it's usually kind of American don't know why and he that he will have the accent of where he was born regardless what cartoons he watches.

As an aside I often wonder what accent American children ur on whilst playing?

My neices were born in London and moved to Scotland when they were 5 and 3, it was amazing how quickly they lost their accents.

Just as I was reading this thread I came across this Irn Bru ad. I get that it is tongue in cheek and Irn Bru specialise in doing these sort of ads (I loved the Fanny one) but this ad does play on small-minded parochialism and xenophobia.

I'm not offended by it, but it would be interesting to see the reactions if the roles were reversed or if the boyfriend was Jewish/Sikh/Black.

Surely if he is really really anti English he should be rejecting the language completely and speaking only Gaelic.

WOW! Lol, YANBU

But I watched loads of American TV as a teen, and when I did my drama finals, I always seemed to put on an American accent.

mrsjay · 25/04/2013 09:04

I seen someone on their facebook page saying Artie made her wee boy cry backstage for not getting changed out of his stage costume quickly enough (he was one of the volunteer children they have at a couple of points in the show). Mind you they have been touring for 30 years I bet you would get fairly scunnered dealing with overexcited children all that time.

mrsjay · 25/04/2013 09:26

DD said they are actually really crabby and a tiny bit scary her illusion was shattered Grin they just do little bits of the show now but he is involved in production , and cilla has a potty mouth [

We were there the other week, the new girl seems nice enough but it's not the same anymore.

megandraper · 25/04/2013 09:38

It's always sad hearing about bigots trying to infect their kids with their unpleasant attitudes.

mrsjay · 25/04/2013 09:38
