In thinking this is barking and a bit funny

So my brothers has an 18 month old DS, he has now decided that he will only watch The Singing Kettle DVDs as he doesn't want him growing up with an English or Anerican accent Grin as he's heard the little girl next door playing and she has an Anerican accent from watching Disney Junior.

In case you don't know The Singing Kettle are Scottish children's shows and you can buy DVDs of them, my brother is very antiEnglish so hates the idea of his DS having an English accent.

I told him that all children put on a voice when they are playing and it's usually kind of American don't know why and he that he will have the accent of where he was born regardless what cartoons he watches.

As an aside I often wonder what accent American children ur on whilst playing?

I am scottish and i dont hate the english. I may hate some english people but thats coz they are twats not because they are english. I also hate some scottish people too.

I have a friend with a lovely english accent and id think it would be quite cute if my dd spoke like that.Grin

idlevice · 24/04/2013 12:55

But isn't he also be worried about his DS getting square eyes from watching the TV in the first place? He should be! Grin

TSO · 24/04/2013 13:00

What! Surely if a child's brought up in Scotland of Scottish parents he will grow up with a Scottish accent? Your brother's, um, a bit on the unusual side, isn't he?

SoniaGluck · 24/04/2013 13:06

He does know that Braveheart wasn't actual history, doesn't he?

That a lot of it was made up and the facts are actually slightly different. Wink

quoteunquote · 24/04/2013 13:08

I am so sad your brother is a twonk, as a Scot I get so bored of this vile attitude, I have no idea why it is so acceptable.

I was home recently and my sister's step daughter aged five told me in a whisper as she was aware she was meant to be ashamed about it, that shock horror her mum is english,

My sister (and her mum) keep telling her it is fine, but between her school friends and her toxic father's family inputs, this little girl at five knows it unwise to advertise that she is part english.

YoniRaver · 24/04/2013 13:12

OP I had a lovely friend I used to work with, she was marriad to someone in the Forces and never showed any signs of Anti-Englishness. She had lived in England overseas for 20 odd years before she returned 'home'. I saw her about 6 months after her move back to Scotland, when she was visiting her son down here and she was spitting so much bile about th English taking over where she now lived. It was awful to hear her spout off, especially as she never seemed to have an issue before

TheRealFellatio · 24/04/2013 13:13

He sounds very unpleasant - what a shame he has children to brainwash.

I hope he watches nothing but BBC Scotland, himself? Anyway with regard to the child, he can rest assured that the only thing that really affects a child's accent in the long term are the accents of the children they go to school with.

LadyFlumpalot · 24/04/2013 13:16

I grew up in the South East, moved to the South West as a teen, regularly spend time with my Yorkshire relatives and my Danish ones. I also went to a posh school and had elocution lessons.

I seem to have picked up little bits from all over the place and as such no-one can ever place where I am from.

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/04/2013 13:24

What is it about the blinking Scots

Bugger off TelevisionDiva! You do know that Scots aren't one homogeneous mass with a single opinion?

OP your brother is bonkers! I really hate that sort of racist nonsense - thankfully IME most Scots agree. However he better put a lid on it pretty quickly as chances are that your DN will mix with children from all different nationalities at nursery/school anyway.

TBH, I don't think there is any more casual racism to English people in Scotland than Scottish people in England. I've had plenty of cheeky/rude comments when I've been with my London colleagues. I've never witnessed it the other way when they come to our office.

InSync · 24/04/2013 13:28

LOL

Too funny

I think you should indulge him. I've got a couple of balamory DVDs he can borrow if you like.

pictish · 24/04/2013 13:35

As a Scot I can tell you that it is barking, but not even slightly funny.
Your brother sounds like a el thicko bigot.

pictish · 24/04/2013 13:42

I feel it is worth mentioning that my ds2 has an inexplicable English accent.

I am scottish as is my dh, and all the teachers at school are too, but while ds1 and dd sound Scots, ds2 has an English accent. Or at least an accent that sounds English.

He has had speech therapy because of being such a late talker, and when he did bother to speak, he did so with a crisp BBC accent! The speech therapist told me it is all to do with how people pronounce vowels, and although a child seemingly having a different accent from his or her family is rare, it's not unheard of. She was keen to assure me it was nothing to do with tv, as I thought. They know how it happens, but not quite why...ds2 has been put forward for some research into the subject.

Do I care about his accent? No!

Your brother is stoopid.

witchface · 24/04/2013 14:49

I am scottish and I have to say my dd can do a cracking american accent after watching disney junior. She also freaks me out with a very south london dahlin' every so often. Not sure where that one comes from!

Still sounds scottish most of the time although more 'generic' scottish than local as dh comes from the other end of the country! Does it matter?

TelevisionDiva · 24/04/2013 16:07

Apologies Statistically, I wasn't being serious and am very sorry you took offence at my comment. I don't tar all Scots with the same brush, just as I hope they don't tar all us English with one.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek with that statement but it obviously didn't come out that way.

Sorry.

FeckOffCup · 24/04/2013 16:25

There's an actual singing kettle shop too full of their merchandise, I think Cilla and Artie run it themselves as my friend met Artie when we went. My DD was asleep in the car so I had to stay with her and missed it Sad.

auntmargaret · 24/04/2013 16:54

I love the Singing Kettle! We went to the shop a few weeks ago on our way home from our Easter holiday. Dd2 (2) loved it, got lots of Kettle goodies. Fell asleep in car before we were out the village, then wakened up 5 minutes from home. She keeps asking to go back, I think she thinks its really close by Grin. OP, all kids play in accents, your DB is a twonk, though his DS will probably love the Kettle. We're going to see them (again) next holiday Monday, I can't wait.

GreenEggsAndNichts · 24/04/2013 17:10

I don't know. Many people here fret over their children picking up Americanisms and American accents from the telly, so I don't see how this is much different.

Both are silly, of course.

idiot55 · 24/04/2013 17:16

what a Numptie.

Id be more concerned about my child being encouraged to watch the singing kettle.

As for the English / scottish thing it defintly works both ways

StatisticallyChallenged · 24/04/2013 17:23

Apology accepted TelevisionDiva - unfortunately a lot of discussions of Scots/Scotland/Independence recently have included similar comments without the tongue in cheek element and it gets kind of dull..... :)

I know of a grown man in his late 40's who is wicked racist towards everyone he is an utter dickhead, pissed my mum off by saying he wouldn't come to my wedding if my future fil was coming Confused because future fil is english. Whilst the wedding is not happening anytime soon he's been firmly put in his place Angry i love my future fil.

My friends partner has a scottish mum but lived in london until he was 6 - pure scots accent. His sister wss born in scotland but has a quite strong london accent as does their mother. It's all a bit Confused

Having lived in england myself i have experienced a fair bit of racism including from the police :( peed me right off and was one of 500 reasons we moved back home.

Either way round it's horrible.

JessieMcJessie · 24/04/2013 18:59

why don't you ask your brother how he managed to maintain his pure Scottish accent growing up with TV from England and America on? Did he never watch Blue Peter, the A team,David Attenborough or any films? I can tell you I watched a LOT of Dukes of Hazzard and don't talk anything like Boss Hogg. Your brother is being an idiot.

LOL at the Scottish mum told her child's speech was delayed because he didn't understand her accent.

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/04/2013 19:03

I'm Scottish and don't hate English people. Which is good as I was born in Watford Grin
We don't really hate you all. Thick bigots don't really either, they just need blame something for their tragic lives Wink

KatieScarlett2833 · 24/04/2013 19:08

He's right about the SK though.
I used to put the videos on while house working when the DC napped. The songs are as infectious as anything and always make me smile.
Altogether now " spout, handle, lid of metal......." Smile

ComposHat · 24/04/2013 19:19

As an English person, living in Scotland, I've only encountered one overt act of prejudice - a colleague telling me to my face that she'd chuck 'all your lot out' I did calmly point out that if she did that Scottish health and education system would collapse overnight, but she wasn't a person who you could reason with.

She was basically one of those bitter, chip on the shoulder, narrow-minded bogots who blamed the English for every act of misfortune that befell her. If she'd be English she'd be the type blaming every ill on the 'illegals and the pakis' rather than the English. Your brother seems cut from the same cloth.
