to be fair, i didnt get les mis either- took a fit of the giggles after 2 hrs and 45 mins and started the couple off behind me. not helped by dd trying to move from embarrassment and falling over in front of the whole cinema. might just be shallow.

It's a miseryfest which I am sure the government have made the BBC broadcast to make us thing that life used to be really shite so we should be grateful that we don't have to worry about our cows eating wild garlic to lose our livelihood

I'm quite enjoying it but I do like wallowing in misery occasionally

I think the teacher just got called up. The thing about being shot was a horrible way of letting him know what would happen if he didn't follow orders once he got the uniform on.

Tried to watch it, didn't like it at all. It seems like it's trying to be an English Heimat and failing miserably.

Anyone else noticed this?

The 'oldest man alive' actor, who is the little boy, much grown up and elderly, and appears speaking to camera at the start/end of each episode has the bluest pale blue eyes.... Yet the same man in his childhood, 'young Burt' is dark brown eyed.

Surely that cannot have escaped the notice of the continuity people?.... It's just odd! Or are we not meant to notice???

I only managed the first episode. I'm not big on unremitting gloom, especially on a Sunday night which is gloomy enough without additional help from the BBC

alabasterangel Bert Middleton (old dude with blue eyes) says to the ?interviewer? ?You better do it properly and make it honest?. I think this is acknowledging that the 1914 bit is a ?reconstruction? rather than a ?flashback? therefore excusing the fact that the actor playing young Bert has brown eyes.
These are my thoughts from watching the first 6 minutes on iplayer though so I may well be wrong. And if I am correct, it is still tenuous.
I also think that Martha (who got off the bus) is wearing a very strange coat and her skirt has mysteriously shortened when she walks into the field.
And why would the boys swim in their knickers then take them off when out of the water?
