To think I'm never going to remember this (irrational annoyance about PE kit warning!)

We had a letter from school today saying the children had met the early years goal for getting themselves changed, but it was taking a long time for them to get changed.

So now 2 days a week we have to send them in to school wearing it, and they then wear it all day!

They are allowed to wear tracksuit bottoms and school jumpers if the weather is a bit chilly as opposed to shorts and t-shirt.

I know I'm being unreasonable to winge on here but I don't have a clue what day it is unless its a Sunday as I work so how on earth am I going to remember this? :o

And it's more washing and ironing!

No this would annoy me as well, I take the pe kit to school on Monday and it gets hu g on their peg where it stays all or a few weeks till I thinkm it needs washing

All children in the class (just reception though) if it was both my children I would have a chance of remembering!

For the others it's take it in at the beginning of term and bring it home at the end to wash!

Its bad enough remembering swimming day, the days they have to take in musical instrument,ents, non uniform day and all the other activities which require something to be taken in! I have three at primary and there is always something to be remembeted!

I teach reception and although getting all the kids changed for PE is a pain, if we don't teach them this year, the poor year 1 teachers will have to do it, alongside counting to 100 and the reading tests! Seems like putting off the work for someone else... If I was going to be their next teacher, I would be annoyed!

Its only the same as sending them in different clothes for non-uniform day, forest school, school trips etc. but actually easier as its a regular thing. They do this at my dc's school as it was taking some children 30mins to get changed, leaving no time for actual PE. Put a weekly reminder in your phone or failing that keep spare joggers and t.shirt in the car...there's always someone changing their child in the car/cloakroom!

How are they meant to get quicker if they don't practise?

But it's no different than all the other things you have to remember on certain days of the week surely? (have big sheet of paper attached to fridge listing library days, days homework must be back, days child must take in money etc)

Sorry for my dense question but why do you iron PE kit? It is for exercising in! I never iron my running kit and don't intend to iron my child's PE kit (when he is old enough to have one!)

Send them in PE kit every day and when questioned say you couldn't remember which days so you covered all of them.
Dd misses dance class occasionally because I forget what day of the week it is.

My friends' Dcs school do this. How bizarre! I think it is really lazy on behalf of the school and I teach early years.

I have alerts on my phone for things like this. Swimming gear, guitar etc. Sanity saver.

That's bloody lazy teaching, actually!

I am amazed you don't have ANYTHING that is day-dependent during the week.... Not a single after-school club or sport? And nothing that you do? (no toddler group, coffee morning, nothing?)

If you really don't know what day it is, how do you manage not to send them to school on Saturday?

It's not lazy teaching though, would it not be easier for the teacher to spend the entire lesson stood there waiting for kids to get changed than to actually teach a PE lesson? Self care is something that can easily be practised at home, so as long as they practise this term and over summer holidays should be fine by Yr1. I'd far rather my child got some exercise and did some sport at school than taught to get dressed-I can cope with that one.

But it is your responsibility to make sure you get the correct days for your child's activities. How do you remember when school holidays are? Charity days? Parents' evenings? Write it on a calendar.

I do have some things on in the week, but I have just never heard of a school doing this before!

Are they going to keep doing it all through school? Obviously at home he dresses/undresses himself, what about in year 1, are they just going to hope they can do it?

No taking the PE kit in means nothing getting lost

it's the norm here in Ireland. Most schools have school tracksuits which the kids wear two days, uniform the others.

I'm always surprised when I realise most English kids have to get changed at school.

Backtobedlam I disagree - I think it is lazy teaching. I see what you mean though about it being a skill they should learn at home.
However it's in the Early Years Curriculum for a reason. A lot of children don't get the chance to learn this at home as their parents do it for them as it's quicker and they aren't supposed to do it at school once to tick a box - it's a skill they should continue to address. And a well trained class only needs five minutes, trust me!

Perhaps I should go in an army uniform and a whistle and get them to do it quicker :o

Why would it confuse you?
If its Tuesday and Thursday each week, then it's Tuesday and Thursday each week.
Don't understand why you couldn't manage this.

I think it's a great idea and saves small ones the stress of getting changed whilst also preserving their PE time.

Yes it's in the EYFS curriculum, but chn are also meant to get 2 hours of exercise a week.
Dressing should be taught at home. If its easier for a parent to help one child, imagine managing 30 of them. Trust me, it's not easy.
30 ties, pairs of sweaty tights/socks, shoes, jumpers. Nightmare.

OK, where is it in the EYFS curriculum? I know it was last year....I thought this year it was just usually staying clean and dry during the day, nothing about changing.....
