AIBU to not reply to people who wished me happy birthday by text message?

OP posts:
germyrabbit · 13/03/2013 18:21

yes

doctorhamster · 13/03/2013 18:22

I don't think yabu. I quite often don't reply unless the text includes a question I need to answer.

FruOla · 13/03/2013 18:23

I think YAB a bit U. I would reply to a Happy Birthday text.

HousewifeFromHeaven · 13/03/2013 18:23

Yabu I think. Why not send a group thank you text? Easy.

badguider · 13/03/2013 18:24

you are not unreasonable but a bit anti-social and curmudgeonly not to respond at some point.

HousewifeFromHeaven · 13/03/2013 18:24

I get all stressy if I'm not replied to though. Like immediately Blush

Sirzy · 13/03/2013 18:24

Well it doesn't really take long to say "thanks" does it? So yes it's being a bit rude IMO

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 13/03/2013 18:59

If they said it to you, would you make no reply?

No thank you from you if they said Happy Birthday? you'd remain mute?

If not, then you should really text back.

AViewfromtheFridge · 13/03/2013 19:03

Is this your way of informing us it's your birthday? Shall we wish you happy birthday to further compound the issue?

Happy birthday!

(For the record, I reply if it's at all personal, but if it's literally just happy birthday I don't.)

catgirl1976 · 13/03/2013 19:03

YABU

StuffezLaBouche · 13/03/2013 19:08

Would it kill you to text a quick thanks?

FruOla · 13/03/2013 19:10

It's just occurred to me this might be a reverse AIBU. What if the OP has sent a HB text to a friend and not had a reply?

ClippedPhoenix · 13/03/2013 19:20

Why on earth wouldn't you reply with thanks? Surely that's the courteous thing to do?

I'd not waste a text on you the next time.

DeskPlanner · 13/03/2013 19:20

Happy Birthday ! Have Thanks and Wine and Biscuit (nearest I can get to cake).
Please return to this thread and thank me.

ilovesooty · 13/03/2013 19:23

Yes. It's rude not to.

theoriginalandbestrookie · 13/03/2013 19:26

I don't mind Happy Birthdays, its the ones who send Happy Christmas and Happy New Year texts that wind me up. If you want to wish me those things, then I'd rather you did it in person or not at all.

ilovemy2babies · 13/03/2013 19:50

FruOla your right I sent the text message and had no thank you

OP posts:
ballstoit · 13/03/2013 19:53

Yanbu. If I get a card in the post, I dont write back to thank them. I hate text etiquette...I reply if I have something to say.
And comparing to conversation is odd imo...you wouldnt interrupt a meeting to wish me happy birthday, so dont get the arse when I dont instantly respond to a text, as you have no clue why.

ScarletLady02 · 13/03/2013 19:55

I would say thanks... I'm not a fan of having to reply straight away to every single text I get sent, or answering every single phone call. Just because I have a mobile does not mean people can impose on my life instantly whenever they see fit (I'm a bit anti-social)

BUUUUT...if someone wished me happy birthday I WOULD reply and say thanks.

ilovesooty · 13/03/2013 20:02

Nobody suggested an instant reply.

midastouch · 13/03/2013 20:22

Bit rude not to! Just send thanks back to everyone in one go, simple

thistlelicker · 13/03/2013 20:24

I think it's rude not to answer any text message! It's quite a bug bear of mine! People have taken the time to text u!

Peacocklady · 13/03/2013 21:07

If you're asking, you're thinking about it too much and it sounds like you're concerned about the person you're not replying to being offended. Just reply if it's bothering you!

But I've texted happy birthday and not had a reply and it didn't bother me in the slightest.
