AIBU to not reply to people who wished me happy birthday by text message?

OP posts:
bizzieb33 · 13/03/2013 21:10

Are they on PAYG ?
Because I am & therefore wouldn't reply if I had got lots as I would run out of credit!!

Lueji · 13/03/2013 21:14

Are you sure the text was received?
If you ring, at least you know when you get through.

Peacocklady · 13/03/2013 21:18

Some people don't reply as it's a bit of a lazy way of wishing happy birthday, maybe they would have wanted a card!

BackforGood · 13/03/2013 21:24

YANBU (or, as we now know, they are NBU).
As somone said on P1 - if I receive a card, I don't write back to thank them for the card. If I walk into the office and they burst into a chorus of 'happy birthday', I wouldn't feel the need to make a grea speech or anything.
Texts are messages, IMO, and, if not phrased as a question, don't need a reply.
Not everyone is on a contract either.

BackforGood · 13/03/2013 21:25

Maybe we'll see another thread in a minute from your friend, questioning why her friend didn't care enough to go to the effort of getting a card and sending it .......

HollyBerryBush · 13/03/2013 21:28

"Happy Birthday" is a statement which requires no response.

"Did you have a nice birthday" is an enquiry and requires a response. Eventually.

drjohnsonscat · 13/03/2013 21:30

Wouldn't that be like sending people a card to thank them for sending a card?

disclaimer - I am an old person and I hate conversation by text.

ceeveebee · 13/03/2013 21:33

I would reply, but not necessarily the same day - on my birthday I went to work, rushed home to put 2 DCs to bed, got dressed and went out for dinner - had no time to reply to texts until the next day.

FruOla · 14/03/2013 07:29

What was/is the timescale, ilovemy2babies? I agree with others that people don't necessarily have the time to text an instant reply, but a reply at some point would be nice.

MoleyMick · 14/03/2013 08:27

I reply, but when I send them, it's out of my mind straight away and I wouldn't worry about whether they replied or not... If I did think about it, I'd probably assume they were busy. Why does it bother you?

Trills · 14/03/2013 08:47

YA also BU to not reply to people who wished you Happy Birthday on Facebook, by the way.

littlewhitebag · 14/03/2013 09:29

If i am not asked a question then i don't think i am expected to reply. You don't reply to birthday cards so no need to reply to a text. I strikes me as a bit needy to expect a reply.

Spatsky · 14/03/2013 09:44

In all honesty I think it's a bit uptight to be annoyed (or however you are feeling) that someone has not replied to a happy birthday text (depending on how personal the message was I suppose).

I'm not sure I would even notice, unless it was a dear friend and a very personal message, but if it was a dear friend I would speak to them to say happy birthday personally anyway I would imagine.

INeverSaidThat · 14/03/2013 10:08

I dontthink you should be annoyed. Your pal shoud have replied but sometimes texts go astray and sometimes you just forget. It is not polite but its not a biggie.

Bunbaker · 14/03/2013 10:13

When I was on PAYG I didn't. I would now, but I don't always have my phone on or near me or I might not be able to answer straight away - if I was driving for instance.

redskyatnight · 14/03/2013 11:23

I'm also on PAYG and it costs me money to send a text. So I'm not going to thank someone sending me a happy birthday text, particularly if I get loads of them, especially bearing in mind that these are people who couldn't be bothered to send me a card.

Also, I wouldn't bother to contact someone to say thanks for a birthday card I'd got through the post (perhaps this is breaking some etiquette too?) and I don't see a text as any different.
