Teen DC is on toilet crying, suffering from painful constipation for first time ever. Been sat there half an hour, nothing's happening. She can't sit there all day. Anyone got a swift remedy??

My mum used to swear by giving warm Ribena in a mug...

fluffyraggies · 12/03/2013 14:23

Sometimes it helps to press the perenium. (sp?) The bit between the bum and the vag. This area can bulge with a large poo, a gentle press while pushing can aim the poo in the right direction.

HTH

Littlemissexpecting · 12/03/2013 14:24

Quick bath
Pint of orange juice

elfycat · 12/03/2013 14:24

Lots of water followed by a cup of hot cofffee (rehydrate and sometimes caffeine/heat stimulates bowel).

Don't strain but rock holding tummy and wriggle side to side. Maybe get some lactulose from pharmacy if not successful (and if teen if fit and well no medical conditions/medication. Speak with GP service)

GeneHuntsMistress · 12/03/2013 14:24

Drink drink drink

HappyJoyful · 12/03/2013 14:24

apricots, dates, prunes ? not sure they are instant, but don't they help get poo out post birth ?!!

HappyJoyful · 12/03/2013 14:25

yes to plenty of water and rocking motion

fluffyraggies · 12/03/2013 14:25

Didn't someone on a thread here get quick relief by applying a little olive oil around the area to lube things up?

BollyGood · 12/03/2013 14:27

Sit on loo with something under feet like a step or small box or something just to raise them it can help

ChairmanWow · 12/03/2013 14:27

Prune juice usually gets me moving pretty quickly.

BollyGood · 12/03/2013 14:28

Or and I know this is tricky squat over something as better position to go. Hope your dc is ok

ScentedNappyHag · 12/03/2013 14:28

Little bit of shower gel on finger tip, rub just inside the anus. Her finger, not yours obviously Grin
It never fails, but I understand people wanting to leave it as a last resort!

bollywoodfan · 12/03/2013 14:29

squat on the floor

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 12/03/2013 14:30

Oxo crumbled into hot water, slurp then plop plop

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 12/03/2013 14:31

Also, pelvic floor exercises

fluffyraggies · 12/03/2013 14:32

Tell her to not panic too. No point in straining - wait for the bodies natural contractions and go with them.

Yes to raising feet.

My Nan used to swear by rubbing your thighs briskly, bless her Grin

I do hope the DD is ok.

OscarSwoosh · 12/03/2013 14:37

thanks so much everyone! she's in lots of pain will try your suggestions.

If you get to a pharmacy for her I highly recommend microlax for an instant fix.

I had really awful constipation during pregnancy and was gone beyond the prune juice/apricot/coffee stage.

It is a laxative and works almost immediately.

Pigsmummy · 12/03/2013 14:41

Lots of water and exercise, brisk walk or similar

DumSpiroSpero · 12/03/2013 14:48

After I had CS they recommended sitting with feet on a stool so knees are higher than waist, and leaning forward slightly which seems to help in general.

Don't know if you can get lactulose over the counter - it's effective but very gentle.

jumpingjackhash · 12/03/2013 14:50

A mug of hot prune juice - works every time for me.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 12/03/2013 14:53

Hot water works for me too. Poor girl!

cardamomginger · 12/03/2013 14:54

Glycerine suppositories? How long has it been since she last went?

Movicol is good to get things moving. You can get this over the counter.

coatonarack · 12/03/2013 14:56

My aunt was severely constipated after a gastric band and she resorted to scooping it out with a teaspoon. I have no idea how much damage she could have caused herself.

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 12/03/2013 14:58

Yy to glycerine suppositories and movicol!
