Teen DC is on toilet crying, suffering from painful constipation for first time ever. Been sat there half an hour, nothing's happening. She can't sit there all day. Anyone got a swift remedy??

How has she got so constipated? (I know there are dozens of ways of getting there). Maybe have a look at her veg/fruit intake and water (not fluids like cola etc but water or at a pinch squash).

Once this is settled (and reassure her that it will be) try to avoid a repeat!

If she's still hanging round the bathroom she needs to be up and walking about for a bit.

i've got jippy bowels i usually do pelvic floor exercises and also try not to push for a few secs like pull it back up but this eases the pressuse for me anyway and helps it move. hope something here helps constipation is painful :(

sjupes · 12/03/2013 15:06

mind the typos my OH is tidying the kitchen and looking pointedly at me as i should be doing housework in the living room.. Grin

UniqueAndAmazing · 12/03/2013 15:07

what about rennies or something and then try again later?

no point sitting there for nothing (and sometimes sitting there can make it hurt more)

LadyPessaryPam · 12/03/2013 15:08

A brisk walk works here too.

Crinkle77 · 12/03/2013 15:10

My mum reckons pears always do the trick

Zalen · 12/03/2013 15:13

A friend at my old job swore by pineapple juice, otherwise second third pelvic floor exercises

Strong coffee, knocking back as much caffeine as possible plus eat fibre if possible and move around.

landofsoapandglory · 12/03/2013 15:17

If she can massage her stomach in a clockwise direction, a bit like a spiral, that can help. You have to use a bit of pressure. sometimes on the lower left handside you can actually feel the poo through the skin, so if you use some downwards pressure there it often gets things moving.

goodjambadjar · 12/03/2013 15:17

Lots of good advice. moving around, definitely. ask her if she can stand up, straighten up as much as she can, then stretch her hands over her head as high as they'll go so she's stretching her torso as much as possible. it might help things move.
I've found fruit juice or fig rolls are a nice way of getting things moving. Or liquorice or strong coffee. the rocking thing often works but she shouldn't strain, however tempting. try and relax as much as possible. Or a hit water bottle at the bottom of her back.
How mortified would she be if she knew a load of strangers were telling her how to poo? Grin
Hope she feels better. x

EuroShaggleton · 12/03/2013 15:18

Make her get off the loo and run around the block for at least half an hour (never too far from the house). Pretty much guaranteed to get things moving.

KellyElly · 12/03/2013 15:21

If it doesn't go away go to the docs and get her a suppository. They aren't very nice but they do work. You may even be able to get from the chemists?

OscarSwoosh · 12/03/2013 15:21

Right we have a solution! She is now off the toilet for all you toilet-thread-watchers Grin

FaceLikeAPickledOnion Your suggestion of a cup of OXO did the trick! It was the vegetable OXO cubes if that helps anyone Grin

Thanks so much for that!

elfycat I have no idea, she only went yesterday and has a good veggie diet, general health is very good.

Off the loo and go for a walk. She needs to walk until she feels like she can't wait for another moment, then come in and it still might take a few minutes.

MrsHoarder · 12/03/2013 15:33

x-posted

Glad it worked.

MrsHoarder · 12/03/2013 15:34

And finally as to why: don't feel obliged to put the answer on the internet but could it be because her period's due?

FaceLikeAPickledOnion · 12/03/2013 15:53

Smile great, glad it worked. I've never actually tried the oxo trick, but several of my friends swear by it.
