Am I being a Petty Fucker? Checkout etiquette.

It's been a long day, so I'm prepared to be told I am being unreasonable.

At Tesco, I started putting my stuff on the conveyor belt. I had lots of stuff. Woman comes up behind me and plonks her basket down, slams one of those dividers down in the middle of the belt and put 8 items down, leaving me to pile up my stuff in the section she'd left me.

AIBU to have thought she should've waited for me to finish unloading my shopping before she put her stuff on? It's not like she was going to be able to get through until I'd finished anyway. The man was already tilling up my stuff.

I'm a Petty Fucker, aren't I?

YANBU - she is rude fucker!!

Seriously, what nice mannered person starts loading when the person in front is obviously still emptying their trolley.

HavingAnOffDAy · 06/03/2013 15:27

YANBU that really pisses me off too.

Unless we're both petty fuckers? Grin

Sirzy · 06/03/2013 15:28

I would have just pushed her divider back until you had enough space for your things!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 06/03/2013 15:29

I. Hate. People. Anywhere and Everywhere.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 06/03/2013 15:29

No. YANBU. She should have waited!

I would have been fuming.

mmmuffins · 06/03/2013 15:29

YANBU

PartyFops · 06/03/2013 15:29

Yanbu, she was rude, but its the sort of thing I might do by mistake if I was tired or something, but you would think she would have then realised and removed her stuff.

I would have then gone so slowly just to piss her off. Grin

ginslinger · 06/03/2013 15:30

No not petty. Today i might have shoved her stuff back in the basket and then kicked it back up the aisle

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 06/03/2013 15:30

YANBU or petty at all. This is seriously bad checkout etiquette and I would have thrown her one of my best death stares before shoving her shopping back in her direction Smile

glenthebattleostrich · 06/03/2013 15:30

Sirzy, I have done just that. It is bloody rude.

I also make sure I take my time so they are waiting ages but then I am a petty bitch when the mood takes me Grin

Hoaz · 06/03/2013 15:30

Well, technically, I think you're right, but if you had that much and we're still unloading and she only had 8 items, you could/should have let her go in front.

She shouldn't have expected it though, is that maybe why she unloaded before you'd finished, because she was expecting you to offer?

slatternlymother · 06/03/2013 15:30

But what can you say to these checkout etiquette breakers?

Sirzy, I did this in M&S at the weekend. Woman behind had a right go at me.! She'd left me no room, my stuff was falling off the conveyor belt and she kept pushing my trolley into the back of me & dd! Checkout guy sat there stunned as I argued the toss with her for a good five mins!

glenthebattleostrich · 06/03/2013 15:31

Sorry, meant the woman was rude, not pushing the divider back

slatternlymother · 06/03/2013 15:32

hoaz the man had already started tilling up my stuff.

maddening · 06/03/2013 15:32

Yanbu - etiquette is to wait for the person in front to put the divider down.

glenthebattleostrich · 06/03/2013 15:33

OP, you put on your biggest smile, say I'm sorry, you seem to have not noticed that I have more things to put on. I'm sure you don't mind me pushing your stuff back as I was here first. A nice passive aggressive laugh works well to :)

Any why should the OP have offered to let the woman go first? I'm confused or just bloody rude and mardy!

LayMizzRarb · 06/03/2013 15:35

She may have been on automatic pilot, and had other stuff on her mind. Would it had really have been too much for you to say in a calm tone, can you move the divider back a bit?, I haven't finished unpacking my trolley. To be honest I never pay a great deal of attention to the person in front, I'm usually thinking what I have to do next, in half an hour, when to fit in xyz in the next two hours.... If someone pointed out I had done it, I would be very apologetic.

Sirzy · 06/03/2013 15:35

I also make sure I take my time so they are waiting ages but then I am a petty bitch when the mood takes me

Its amazing how long packing and paying can take when needed Grin

Sirzy · 06/03/2013 15:36

Automatic pilot? You would have to have your eyes closed not to notice that the person in front was still putting shopping on!

SixFeetUnder · 06/03/2013 15:38

I was in Lidl recently and someone behind me did this. When I ran out of room for all my crap shopping I just shoved the divider back shoving his lovingly spaced out shopping back in the process until I had enough room. Thought he might have a heart attack his face went so red. The irony is, he only had a basket and I had a huge trolley and if he had waited one more second I was about to tell him he could go in front while I finished unloading.

INeverSaidThat · 06/03/2013 15:38

YABU not to have said sorry , but can you remove your basket as I still have to unpack the rest of my shopping
Or, to have simply moved her shopping along.

She was (of course) BU and rude.

MajaBiene · 06/03/2013 15:38

Why didn't you just say "I've got more stuff to put on"?

This has happened to me before and the person behind just genuinely didn't realise/wasn't thinking.

manticlimactic · 06/03/2013 15:41

What you need to do is get another divider and stick it in front of the magic eye thing at the beginning of your shopping. The belt wont move then when the checkout operator starts scanning your items and then you'll have a gap and the arsehole will be pissed off the belt isn't moving.Grin

giddypants · 06/03/2013 15:42

very rude. but maybe she was a bit tired or didn't realise. I've said to one of these people that I haven't finished unpacking and they have removed their stuff and walked off, if she had got funny then I would have pushed her stuff back until I had enough room.
