Am I being a Petty Fucker? Checkout etiquette.

It's been a long day, so I'm prepared to be told I am being unreasonable.

At Tesco, I started putting my stuff on the conveyor belt. I had lots of stuff. Woman comes up behind me and plonks her basket down, slams one of those dividers down in the middle of the belt and put 8 items down, leaving me to pile up my stuff in the section she'd left me.

AIBU to have thought she should've waited for me to finish unloading my shopping before she put her stuff on? It's not like she was going to be able to get through until I'd finished anyway. The man was already tilling up my stuff.

I'm a Petty Fucker, aren't I?

Whatever happened to the single basket or 10 items or less checkouts? Confused

AlisonMoyet · 06/03/2013 17:26

how do you have TIME or energy to let such trivial shit bother you - why not worry about something worthwhile?

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 06/03/2013 17:28

Alison - and yet you've posted 3 times on this trivial not-worthwhile thread.....

10 items or FEWER please!

slatternlymother · 06/03/2013 17:30

Er, ok alison I get your point Grin

My bugbear is when you have a little till with no conveyor belt and people decide to plonk down their basket when the till operator has just moved mine out of the way and I'm only just getting my card out to pay.

Surely it's only good manners to wait for the person to pay and move out of the way instead of hovering over their shoulder while they're putting their PIN in? After many years going to the same store before work and getting to know most of the morning shift, they'll often strike up a conversation with me when this happens if it isn't crazy busy. I think they think it's rude too. Grin

INeverSaidThat · 06/03/2013 17:32

AlisonMoyet

.....and yet you clearly have the TIME and energy to be so bothered by the OP actions that you had to write three posts about it. Ironic Huh! Shock

Fillyjonk75 · 06/03/2013 17:38

Yes, I hate it when people crowd you near the pin machine. Might have to just take a step back and "Ow!"

"Oh sorry, I didn't realise you were so close!"

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2013 17:47

That is really rude. So is putting your basket on the left hand side of the serve yourself till while i am still getting my receipt, putting my card away and picking up my bags. Angry

LittleEdie · 06/03/2013 17:47

Hmm. I like to daydream. I could well imagine myself being the 'early loader' in this scenario. Have a heart, she was probably being thoughtless rather than U!

lottieandmia · 06/03/2013 17:50

YANBU - everyone knows that you wait for the person before you has finished unloading before you start, not only is it good manners but it's also plainly common sense.

She's obviously an ignorant twat.

HeadfirstForHalos · 06/03/2013 17:51

Alison, how do you have the time and the energy to post to ask people how they have time or energy to let such trivial shit bother them - why not worry about something worthwhile?

OliviaMumsnet · 06/03/2013 18:08

Peace love and 6 items or fewer, people

wintertimeisfun · 06/03/2013 18:09

yanbu, that would have pissed me right off too :)

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2013 18:10

Scan and shop is the way to go. No conveyor and no mixing with the riff raff at the checkouts. Wink

Sugarice · 06/03/2013 18:11

Alison unidentified moaner in AIBU area! Grin

TorianaTollywobbles · 06/03/2013 18:18

I did that once. Woman in front of me had a go at me. At the time I didn't think I had done anything that bad, so I started a thread about it on here.

Got my arse kicked and learned my lesson. I have never done it again Grin

Sirzy · 06/03/2013 18:28

Sparkling - our local supermarket now has self scan complete with conveyer!

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2013 18:31

What's the conveyor for? Shop and scan you scan as you go round. Confused

SquinkiesRule · 06/03/2013 18:36

I've had someone come and dump their stuff behind mine when the belt is stopped and I still have a ton to unload. I just turned and said "excuse me but I'm not done you, you haven't left enough room" They were very apologetic, and grabbed their stuff and ran off to another till. I thought it was weird and rude, but maybe they just didn't look and see my food to feed the hoards.

Sirzy · 06/03/2013 18:42

Sorry I misunderstood I didn't think anywhere did that scan and shop anymore

Sparklingbrook · 06/03/2013 18:46

Oh sorry sirzy I do know what you mean now. How does that work with a conveyor? Confused Does all your shopping disappear to the far end when you have scanned it. Grin Who is packing?

YY Tesco are doing Scan and Shop. V exciting.

Yfronts · 06/03/2013 18:46

maybe you could have moved the divider to create more space for yourself?

Hissy · 06/03/2013 20:59

I glare if the person behind me draws level with the check out if I'm packing! I'm mardy and proud.

Hecate IS GOD of PA though!

emsyj · 06/03/2013 21:54

YANBU, someone did this to me a few weeks ago in Aldi - I just picked up his stuff and moved it. He then threw it all back in his trolley and huffed and puffed and went to another checkout. I was 39+4 and in no mood to be trifled with.

Hassled · 06/03/2013 22:01

I shop in the wrong sort of shops. This has NEVER happened to me and I feel a bit robbed.

But can I just say that while Hecate might be the PA in Supermarkets Queen, I am the Queen of Packing at Aldi. They chuck the stuff at me with their ruthless Germanic efficiency and I keep up with them. If I can get to the point where I'm drumming my fingers waiting for them to chuck the chocolate at me then I will die a happy woman.
