I've been on Mumsnet a good few months and still can't figure out how to do them. Am I just being thick?

You do square brackets around the word. So [ hmm ] with no spaces gets you

Just follow the instructions at the bottom of the message box.

But basically

Square bracket [ (found next to P on keyboard)
Emoticon grin, blush, sad etc
Other square bracket ]
No spaces

So [ grin ] [ sad ] without the spaces.

I've tried that and still can't do it.

Square brackets - mine are over on the right on my keyboard not up the top.

You can always swipe across the word/brackets and then copy and paste it into your message

Square brackets on mine are next to the Return key.

They are next to the p on mine

On a standard keyboard, they're next to the P and they have a bracket like this { over a bracket like this [
