I went into Currys in Chingford to by a £400 camera (02/01/13) and stood waiting to be served for nearly 30 mins, whilst firstly being glared at by members of staff and the security staff having a chat in a group and with their manager close to the front door. Finally once I managed to get one to come to serve me he firstly had no idea about the product, or the insurance that was advertised with it. Then when I decided I was going to purchase the item anyway he disappeared for 15 mins and came back to tell me that it was out of stock. When I asked if I could purchase the display model he went to the manager, who was still watching me from the front door and returned to inform me that the manager wouldn't sell me the item because they were awaiting an order!
I went home and ordered the Camera online and two days later was informed by my Credit Card company that there was a problem with the purchase and to get in touch with Currys. This I tried to do 9 times over 3 days! I waited a total of 3 hours in call-queues that informed me that they were very busy, even at 09:00 in the morning!
I emailed Currys, using the Knowhow email service and received an email back informing me that somebody would be in touch. 2 days later I received an email informing me that the camera was out of stock and that they would get in touch when it was available. It is now 8 days since I placed the order! In this time I have emailed several times asking to cancel my order or upgrade me to the next model of camera, which only affords me another automated response email. I have tried calling, but I get annoyed and frustrated 15 mins into waiting in the queue!

I've been advised now to seek legal redress, so I'm leaving it alone for a while, just to watch it develop, but I would advise anybody considering making a purchase from this company to thin really hard about it. This is an isolate incident, this is incompetence of the highest caliber!

I have been a so called shop monkey. You don't often do it because it's the job of your dreams. You do it because it's the best choice for you at that time. It also doesn't define the kind of person you are. Incredibly smart people do shit jobs at times. It may be that they didn't get the breaks academically that some people got. They may have been restricted to going out and getting a job at 16 because of their family finances (that was me). They may have been raised by parents who didn't believe in education. There may be a million reasons why they work in these places. They don't do it so that people can denigrate them for the job they do. There's no call for calling people shop monkeys.

NewYearsEvelyn · 10/01/2013 19:10

There are also people who love working in stores and who actually build a great career doing it, so let it go...

RandallPinkFloyd · 10/01/2013 19:15

What a joy that must be for all concerned sledward Hmm

Seriously op, ok the service wasn't great (although I am more than half convinced that a lot of it has been exaggerated for effect, I mean for crying out loud, unless you've got two heads or you behave like a total arse no one is stared at that much) but what on earth makes you think that the rest of the world wants to hear about it?

What are you hoping to achieve exactly? I'm guessing some of that redress you casually mentioned. Do you genuinely think you have enough of a world wide influence on shopping trends that you can hold them to ransom or something? Do you think you can single-handedly cause the collapse of the company?

This sort of thing pisses me right off. Just complain to the company and keep talking to them until you're happy, it's not difficult.

Unless you're the type of twat who actually wants people to lose their jobs. But I'm sure you're not. I mean who would wish unemployment on a whole store's staff in the middle of the worst recession in modern times just because they fucked up a camera order?

I'm sure you're not the type of person who, if the company does fold which is a very real risk right now, would gloat to "as many sites as will listen" abut how they brought it n themselves.

Oh wait "I look forward to currys going the same way as comet very soon".

Yes, it'll be a happy day when you get to watch the poor sap who mis-keyed your order queuing up at his local food bank to feed his kids. Oh how we'll laugh.

shinehead69uk · 10/01/2013 19:20

What out of pocket expense? 3 hours spent on a 0844 call queue to start with, my valuable time going to and fro trying firstly to speak to somebody and then to cancel my order.
Are there really people out there that spend their time picking holes in valid problems and generally trying to berate consumers who have suffered at the hands of bad customer service?
Yes I will vote with my feet and unfortunately not blaming all of the Currys staff for the problems I've suffered isn't possible if I stop using their stores.
Its time the store owners cleaned up their acts. Train your staff or have them inform customers that they will have to wait for a trained member of staff.
Staff should be disciplined for these occurrences, so that it doesn't impact on the good members of staff.
Anybody want to troll this? go for it. I'm happy to do my bit for care in the community!

if you are wondering why you were being stared at...

3 of you went into the shop and then split up in 3 different directions

red flag for shoplifters I'm affraid

shop staff should be disciplined for what exactly

he was in the back for 15 minutes really, you timed him? presumably looking for the item that you wanted

I can see the letter inviting them to investigation now -'you are being investigated for misconduct or would your prefer goss misconduct in that on the 2nd of January, you went to look for an item that a customer wanted to purchase'

RandallPinkFloyd · 10/01/2013 19:47

Aren't you a treat. I'm sure the store will miss you terribly.

SweetSeraphim · 10/01/2013 19:49

I was misled over a cash back offer once. Called the Currys customer service line and they were excellent, paid me the money into my account in a couple of days.

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 10/01/2013 19:50

Should have gone to Jessops! This is what the future holds...shit customer service from people who know fuck all about the products.

RandallPinkFloyd · 10/01/2013 19:54

3 hours in a call queue? I call bollocks on that I'm afraid.

meltedcreditcard · 10/01/2013 20:04

DS bought a £400 camera from Jessops last weekend. That store is now closed Sad

I want to know what you look like shinehead69uk and why they were all watching you!!

RuleBritannia · 10/01/2013 20:19

I wanted a freezer to my own specifications of size and price and looked on line. I found what I wanted in the Curry's website. Because I was specific about size, I went to the local Curry's (Reading) to try to see one with a tape measure but there wasn't one in stock.

I was assured that the measurements were fine and they ordered one on line for me in the shop. I paid then and there. Very good customer service.

The freezer was delivered a couple of days later, the delivery men brought it in and put it into position (perfect fit) but they did not attach the door handle! I thought they could have finished off the job by doing that. Until then, I had been pleased with Curry's service.

FredFredGeorge · 10/01/2013 20:26

Sorry YABU, your repeated attempts to spend money with them and deciding to still buy the goods regardless of the poor service is exactly why they have poor service. If you'd just walked out in the first place you wouldn't've suffered the rest.

Pandemoniaa · 10/01/2013 20:33

My DH enjoys baiting the "shop monkeys" (you pay peanuts, you get monkeys) in Currys et al.

I'm sure they love him too. In fact, many happy hours are probably spent discussing his shortcomings once he's left the shop.

As far as your issues are concerned, OP. I get the impression that you are trying, without much success, to whip up some sort of campaign based entirely around your experience in one branch of Currys. Quite how you plan to "take this a lot further" I don't know. Sadly I don't think I care either.

EnjoyResponsibly · 10/01/2013 20:51

My DH enjoys baiting the shop monkeys...

Patronising prick.

I occasionally meet people like him in my job. I am extremely creative at causing a righteous fuck up of their day.

HoHoHoNoYouDont · 10/01/2013 20:55

I am extremely creative at causing a righteous fuck up of their day.

Absolutely love that line!

TeamSledward · 10/01/2013 20:56

I have reported my post. Totally didn't Mean to offend. I don' t condone his actions and berate him for it. I have worked in shops since I was 14 and I know the kind of reaction his behaviour gets from staff when he has left the store.

But also I appreciate the OPs concerns about lack if service, in Currys in particular. Will it go the way of Jessops and Comet do you think?

TeamSledward · 10/01/2013 20:58

EnjoyResponsibly, you are totally within your rights to fuck up their day! Grin

marquesas · 10/01/2013 21:05

TeamSledward, I'm glad you're having your post deleted, just reading it made me so angry that there are people who would act like that. Does a grown man really do find any kind of satisfaction in behaving like that?

shinehead - more fool you really, why on earth would anyone spend 3 hours on hold?

Hydrophilic · 10/01/2013 21:37

So you had bad customer service in the store twice and STILL bought the product from them?! And you hung around for a vastly exaggerated amount of time, rather than leave? And then wonder why you continue to get bad customer service?

What use is your post on here? We all know Currys is crap. Take your whining to Currys themselves.

Boomerwang · 10/01/2013 21:55

Those saying 'why are you writing about it here?'

What are you doing reading this thread, then?

Boomerwang · 10/01/2013 21:57

Oh, and to stay on topic, I've always known the Dixons group were overpriced and don't appear to actually want any customers. I wanted a new computer mouse and was prepared to buy an expensive gaming one but there were no models I could test out. I asked a member of staff if he would unbox one for me to try out and he refused. I said 'you'd rather I just didn't buy anything at all?' and he shrugged his shoulders and walked off.

Lovely.

Vagaceratops · 10/01/2013 22:32

So who told you to seek legal redress?

shinehead69uk · 14/01/2013 09:50

Sorry people. I so got it wrong by posting my views on this site. I was under the impression it was an adult site, containing the views and conversations of adults with lives and valid opinions, but I can see that that I got that almost totally wrong. There are a few of you who seem to understand maturity and this apology isn't meant for you.
I will now go and pat myself on the back for managing to gain not only an apology for the troubles I had both instore and online, but also a thank you for highlighting the bad customer service. The thank you came in the form of an upgraded model of camera!
To the Trolls... thanks for the entertainment!

Yep unfortunately there are complete arseholes who hang around in aibu, in fact all over mn and generally the internet. It either brings out the worst in people or its just where the worst people are more likely to hang out. Not sure which. Perhaps its the anonymity.

Its the reason i left and then i came back and people are still nasty fuckers!
