Oh bless George Osborne is giving up his child benefit

......soo all us very squeezed middle parents should feel a whole lot better.

He's written to The Daily Fail to let us all know of his sacrifice and how it is the "fair and right decision".

George would just like to ask how exactly is it fair and right that amongst the other 85 % of families who will still get child benefit there are many earning far,far more as a family than many losing it?You know those on 80,90 and even 100k.

Also if you come from another European country you'll keep it regardless of what you earn, again how is this fair or right?

You waffled on proclaiming the need for your other cuts but frankly I didn't bother reading any further as being part of a party with such blatant disregard for fairness or common sense I felt it was a waste of my time reading anything else.

Oh and being worth£4 million with a nice wallpaper million £ trust fund on top doesn't really qualify you to lecture those of us hard working families at the other end of the food chain on making sacrifices. You know those of us that have always worked hard, with zero trust fund, private education or Oxbridge network to get us on in life. Those of us that you keep clobbering time and time again.

The fact you seem to think we're all coffee drinking yummy mummies who could go without a months worth of manicures to cover our loss of CB just shows how ridiculously out of touch you really are.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm just going to put another jumper on(central heating isn't often on these days and we don't have a WFA to fall back on like many wealthy pensioners).Need to get Dp up so he can sort out his bike for work Monday. That would be the push bike he cycles many miles on each day after a demanding day of work as we've been priced out of public transport. Also need to try and eek out 3 times packed lunches for Monday from the meagre offerings in my Lidle filled cupboards as currently on day 4 of our no spend January and can't afford school dinners.

Anytime you want to give me tips on stretching our meagre budget even further in order to cover our loss of Child Benefit feel free!

You mean George has actually done it?
With a lady?
That's more appalling than any budget news.

lauriedriver · 06/01/2013 10:15

I'm really lucky getting to keep my child benefit but then me & my man only bring home around 30k a year between us (both working full time).

I'd love to earn enough to lose it but wierdly we still manage on our wages.

ssd · 06/01/2013 10:21

why does he even get it, what does he earn?

HollyBerryBush · 06/01/2013 10:23

Also if you come from another European country you'll keep it regardless of what you earn, again how is this fair or right?

How does that happen then? There must be a recipriocal agreement with those countries that British nationals get it, regardless of income

I can't find it on any reliable government site

cinnamonnut · 06/01/2013 10:24

He earns £134,565 as the chancellor

Boggler · 06/01/2013 10:25

It's the unfairness that really upsets me, a household with one earner on 61k gets nothing not a sausage even if they have 4 kids and are struggling, while next door a family with where there are 2 people working and earn £99k get to keep it all whilst also having 2 tax allowances etc etc. it's blatantly unfair and I don't care how they dress it up it stinks.

fairylightsandtinsel · 06/01/2013 10:27

he would have got it up to now the same as everyone else as it was a universal benefit. He now loses it as he earns over 60k. Its not a noble gesture as he has no choice.

Savannahgirl · 06/01/2013 10:27

I really hope Georgie Porgie takes the time to read all of the comments made by everyone at the bottom of his article.
They are made by real people with real concerns, rather than just being skewed survey statistics put together by Tory party funded surveysAngry

HollyBerryBush · 06/01/2013 10:30

Does he take his full salary - a lot of cabinet ministers don't, they only take a basic MPs salary, whihc is aoround the £65/66Kmark

Savannahgirl · 06/01/2013 10:33

That's the crux of it boggler
Most people losing it would do so with good grace if they knew every family on the same NET income (whether jointly or solely earned ) were being treated the same. But since this is not the case, it's hardly surprising that it's causing such anger.

cinnamonnut · 06/01/2013 10:33

Good point Holly

Savannahgirl · 06/01/2013 10:35

hollyberrybush is the Pope Catholic? Grin
I would imagine he takes everything he can!

DreamingOfTheMaldives · 06/01/2013 10:37

I can't get my head round the fact that one person earning 60k takes home around £3400 per month. A couple who earn 30k each take home £3800 per month between them. How can it possibly be fair that the couple who take home more money still receive child benefit yet the other doesn't. Similarly with the couple earning 100k between them (50k each).

We have not a hope in hell of ever earning enough to lose child benefit under this new system but I can still see how unfair it is.

HollyBerryBush · 06/01/2013 10:37

I still want to know about this bit in the OP

Also if you come from another European country you'll keep it regardless of what you earn, again how is this fair or right?

because I'm all over the HMRC site like a rash and can't find anything remotely like that.

testbunny · 06/01/2013 10:38

I am in disbelief that they are getting away with the fundamental flaw in this system!!

It's absolutely clear from seeing DC on the Andrew Marr show that he doesn't give a txss about the issues working families face. Not withstanding the obvious unfairness of how the CB is calculated, the fact they can cut taxes for people earning over £150k, but then effectively reduce income for parents earning £60k is unbelievable!

Why are they getting away with all of this?? If the Tories get in again I will have to leave the country....

Binkybix · 06/01/2013 10:38

But earning £65k should still mean he doesn't get any as the cut off point for getting none is one person earning £60k or above.

HollyBerryBush · 06/01/2013 10:40

From HMRC:

You or your partner have an individual income of more than £50,000

If you or your partner have an individual income of more than £50,000, you can still qualify for Child Benefit. But you'll need to decide whether to actually receive the payments. This is because from 7 January 2013 you may be liable to a new tax charge called the 'High Income Child Benefit charge'.

It's important to still fill in a Child Benefit claim form, even if you don?t want to get the payments. This is because if you are entitled to receive Child Benefit it can:
? help you qualify for National Insurance credits that can protect your entitlement to State Pension
? help protect your entitlement to other benefits such as Guardian's Allowance
? ensure your child is automatically issued with a National Insurance number before their 16th birthday

gimmecakeandcandy · 06/01/2013 10:43

Fucking stupid cunt - George Osborne that is. Who the fuck does the think he is telling us he is giving up his child benefit when he has his fucking millions? What a fart. The unfairness of this benefit is outrageous like others have pointed out - why not do it over 100k earnings?

I am fuming that such an ill thought policy that is unfair (because one can be earning 60k and mum at home and lose whilst two can be earning 59k each and still have something) and fuck the Tories

I fucking hate the liberals too and not so not on labour so who do I go for?

edam · 06/01/2013 10:47

It's not just the double earner v. single earner thing that's unfair. It's also taking yet more money from women, who are already the chief victims of the Tory's 'austerity' drive (obv. child benefit can go to either parent, but is mainly paid to women).

The stupid 'austerity' policies are actually costing us more money by killing the economy - government borrowing has gone up not down, because stupid cuts are self-defeating. Plunging the economy into double dip, and very likely triple dip, recession means more unemployment, under-employment, and fewer tax receipts, entirely as predicted. Even Osborne has had to admit his plans have unravelled and they won't have eliminated the deficit in one parliament. Feckers. They knew what they were doing was stupid, but were determined to savage the poor and the sick for entirely ideological reasons.

Chunkymumma · 06/01/2013 10:49

He's a total cunt! There was a dispatches programme on last year about him. Apparently he and his family fiddled their way out of paying inheritance tax, worth 3 or 4 million. It's an absolute joke that this over privelidged wanker is in charge of our countries finances. He's completely out of touch.

twinklesparkles · 06/01/2013 10:51

Hahaha I bet he hasn't even done it. I want proof! :)

testbunny · 06/01/2013 10:53

I don't understand why the Labour aren't making more of this mess?? This is the Tories 'poll tax' - why Isn't it being jumped upon. I guess it's because it's the top 60% earners losing it, but they are missing a trick here.....

Arithmeticulous · 06/01/2013 10:54

Boggler has it.

This just stinks of bad implementation of a badly thought out policy. Yes in principle higher earners should not receive child benefit. They have done something to tick off a box - yep, reduced CB bill. How they have done it - attacked individual taxation, privacy issues, disparity between double/single incomes >60k = shite.
