A cold does not = flu.
A sore throat does not = tonsilitus.
Going out in the cold weather does not give you a cold.
You are not dying when you have a cold. You will feel like shit for a few days but you aren't that ill.
You do not need to go to the doctors for everything. Sometimes just waiting to see if something clears up on its own is the best course of action.

Rant over!

I agree, some people do seem to over react to the slightest thing.

gordyslovesheep · 19/12/2012 19:45

OH YANBU I had to seriously bite my tongue yesterday in school - 3 mums deep in outraged conversation - one child has a cough (my dd3 has the same cough - not nice but totally normal)

Mum1 - 'well the Dr REFUSED to give her antibiotics - just REFUSED'

Mum2 'Yes a dose of antibiotics is what she needs - these Dr's a rubbish'

Mum3 'I changed doctor because mine refused anitbiotics - it's an outrage'

Mum1 - yes I am changing GP - how can they not give antibiotics for a cough

I wanted to scream - she has a COUGH - it's probably VIRAL - antibiotics would do FUCK ALL ...

Ilovesunflowers · 19/12/2012 19:55

Oh god gordy. Don't even get me started on people who want antibiotics for the slightest sneeze and sniffle! I wouldn't have bit my tongue. I would have been very sarcastic with them! Xmas Grin

But not to the extent that you go to work/send DC to school to spread it to everyone!

Yanbu. I have an old school acquaintance on faffbook who has the "proper" name for everything. It's maddening. And she's always got something. (I have deleted her once but she re-added me and was hurt....)

SantasENormaSnob · 19/12/2012 20:18

Yadnbu

Ilovesunflowers · 19/12/2012 20:21

Glad its not just me!

Yanbu.

Hate it. Can't stand my dh when he gets a cold.. oh he does go on. He rambles on about how 'it takes so long for him to get better because he has to go out in the cold to work' and he just goes on and on about how shit he feels, drugs himself up on lemsips and nasal spray and god knows what else. Proper 'man flu'. He's a nightmare to be around, so stroppy and whingey. I just tell him to get over it. Its a cold, hardly life or death. Grr!

Feckthehalls · 19/12/2012 20:42

ha ha brilliant, gordy!

even worse than hypochondriacs.....FACEBOOK hypochondriacs!

Sirzy · 19/12/2012 20:45

very true Feck,

The amount of times I see things like "DS is sooo poorly, really worried about it" and then after the obligatory "whats up" comments it is established they have a bit of a cold!

foosty · 19/12/2012 20:48

so, in your opinion, sunflowers, should people not post on here asking for advice in how to lessen symptoms? Because I get the feeling this thread was started after I posted ... seemed to annoy you. Bizarre.

I have had proper flu before, and do know the difference. I said that I had flu-like symptoms (namely the aches, which I don't get with colds - and it's the aches that make life hard) and was just asking for a bit of help. So sorry to bother you. But you really shouldn't have bothered responding.

toofattorun · 19/12/2012 20:51

I currently have influenza and tonsillitis and need antibiotics now.

Feckthehalls · 19/12/2012 20:52

Sirzy one of my FB friends posted this time last year she was worried Christmas would be ruined because she had an abscess on her bum!!!!

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 19/12/2012 20:54

YANBU.

Pisses me off.

SkivingAgain · 19/12/2012 20:55

YANBU - I find all talk of minor ailments incredibly boring. Rest + painkillers + fluids = cure for most ailments.

SkivingAgain · 19/12/2012 20:57

Feck - what did your friend have planned for Christmas?

PimpMyHippo · 19/12/2012 20:57

I have a friend like this, she had an ear ache once and the GP told her to use some drops for two weeks and return if it was no better - she used them for a few days and then said "it still hurts, I'm going down to A&E - I'll tell them I've been using the drops for the two weeks, maybe they'll give me something stronger". Hmm Great, LIE to the people at A&E who have far better things to do!

Ilovesunflowers · 19/12/2012 20:59

Foosty if someone posted 'I have a cold. Is there any way I can lessen the symptoms' that would be ok. When they say flu or flu like symptoms it pissed me off. They are two completely different viruses. The words aren't interchangable Fwiw it wasn't just your post that pissed me off - hypochondriacs have annoyed me for years. Also Fwiw I currently have a bad cold (with aches) and I do not have flu.

OP posts:
DIYapprentice · 19/12/2012 21:06

Yes, hypochondriacs give me the pips, but a bad cold can be worse than a mild flu so Hmm to those who get so pissy with people who complain about having a cold. (Course if they moan continuously about it, then YADNBU)

And that is exactly WHY they say 'flu like symptoms', because it's not the flu but some of the symptoms can be the same and it leaves you feeling completely and utterly crap.

Fakebook · 19/12/2012 21:09

I have the flu and a migraine. It's bloody horrible. I decided to go to the work christmas party yesterday because I couldn't let my friends down. I had a few shots of vodka and few glasses of wine and got sooooo drunk. But I still have the flu and a bloody migraine and now I've got the whooping cough so I'm sitting at home having a fag and drinking some wine listening to some trance. Might go to the doctor tomorrow if it carries on.
