A cold does not = flu.
A sore throat does not = tonsilitus.
Going out in the cold weather does not give you a cold.
You are not dying when you have a cold. You will feel like shit for a few days but you aren't that ill.
You do not need to go to the doctors for everything. Sometimes just waiting to see if something clears up on its own is the best course of action.

Rant over!

Best get an emergency appointment fakebook. Actually get yourself to a&e!

Fakebook · 19/12/2012 21:15

I think I might. I don't want to risk my life. Might call the ambulance.

Ifyoulike · 19/12/2012 21:15

My DH drives me crazy with this!

He always says 'flu' when he means cold, and 'migraine' when he means headache.

He also thinks co-dydramol is like a medicine that cures almost everything (despite me trying to explain its more about the symptom relief) Wink

And if he gets a sore or achey knee for example, he can't just deal with it til it goes away, he has to actually go to the GP to get ointment or cream prescribed which he then begs me to put on for him (think its more about the TLC), and then bandages up the offending joint like a mummy.

Ifyoulike · 19/12/2012 21:16

Oh, and proceeds to remind me every few minutes about how much it hurts.

I have arthritis, so have to hide my Hmm expression, at least until I run out of patience!

foosty · 19/12/2012 21:17

ok - but just because I posted looking for advice doesn't make me a hypochondriac.

That really pisses me off.

I'm hardly on asking if I should go to A&E or anything dramatic like that. Just wanted some home remedies I might not have tried yet.

And surely, by definition, everyone starting a thread on MN is attention seeking?

Jingleallthejay · 19/12/2012 21:17

Oh goodness me yes they are so annoying i hid a fb friend because of it and anothers child ATM has such terrible flu the Doctor has said it is the worst he has seen in a long time poor baby poor baby was stuffing her face full of sweeties and watching films so she is just a little bit poorly then

Jingleallthejay · 19/12/2012 21:19

I'm sitting at home having a fag and drinking some wine listening to some trance. Might go to the doctor tomorrow if it carries on.

oh dearie me that could be your last wine or fag poor soul

Ilovesunflowers · 19/12/2012 21:19

I haven't called you a hypochondriac foosty. Ok.

Never had a day off work or been layed up feeling sorry for myself over a cold, flu and come to think of it anything. Great believer in a lot of stuff is in the mind. Sit there feeling sorry for yourself sniffing away and you'll feel dreadful for days if not longer.
Man up and shrug your shoulders before taking a couple of flu capsules ( they work on colds as well) and get on with your life. Wash your hands a lot and use a hankerchief so as not to spread it.
Think the longest i had anything was after my first flu jab ( which is not the flu virus injected into you). Lasted 2 weeks ( it was only a cold but did a good impression of flu) but carried on as normal. It went eventually.
Those woman slagging off their doctors don't know squat. Once an illness shows itself it's too late for antibiotics. They only work if taken during the first signs.

Jingleallthejay · 19/12/2012 21:32

Going out in the cold weather does not give you a cold.

A lot of parents won't let their children outside when it is cold incase they catch something and dont understand the germs are lurking in the warm

MakeHayInAManger · 19/12/2012 21:39

The one that drives me crazy is migraine for headache - no, if you have a migraine you would certainly not be shopping/working/watching tv/moaning - you would be sleeping in a dark room because there is literally nothing else you can do. And no, my child will not catch a cold because she is not wearing a hat. Although I do have frequent conversations with her about having to wear something warm outside - the cold weather does affect her breathing. I still send her out in it though!

However, I'm not sure it should be a badge of honour to be struggling in to work with a nasty dose of something (especially d&v) - it may not be life threatening, but that does not mean you have to share it! There's a reason why schools say no returning for 48 hours after sickness or shits....why should it be different for adults? (Sorry, soap box).

IneedAsockamnesty · 19/12/2012 21:43

I have to pinch the back of my hand when people who do the whole " OMG I've got such dreadful flu" usually said whilst being out and about just being a little snuffly, to stop myself saying "no you have a cold"

I've had flu once in my life as have two of my children both of us ended up being kept in hospital its nothing at all like a cold.

PenguinBear · 19/12/2012 21:50

In once sense, no YANBU as it can get very annoying with the type of things mentioned above.

However, if you are referring to people with health anxiety ( previous often referred to as hypercondria), then YABU as I work with someone with this condition and it really does seem to take over her life and it isn't her fault. She is on the waiting list for counselling but hasn't got any yet... She can get quite obsessive but I try not to get annoyed as I have to work with her everyday and support her.

OnlyWantsOne · 19/12/2012 21:54

Antibiotics only work if taken at the first sign of illness? What RUBBISH!!

OP YANBU. At all. I have a burst tonsil thing I was taken by DP to GP, turns out its a quinsy?! Any ways, painful but I'm in antibiotics and I'm feeling much better. Some one asked how I am earlier & said I had ruptured tonsil thing and laughed about amount of pus, she nodded in agreement and said "oh totally know how you feel my glands are all up too"

cumfy · 19/12/2012 21:57

seriously bitten tongue

Sounds nasty, could be infected.

bedmonster · 19/12/2012 21:58

Oh god, I know a woman who's so attention seeking its rubbed off on to her own kids. Her dd had one of those flappy bits of skin on her finger and she said to me that it was all swelling up and her mum said she might need antibiotics. There was literally a teeny scrap of skin loose. No signs of redness, no inflamation.
The mum also takes great delight harping on about visits to a&e with stories of false drama which in pretty much every case she has been sent home. Although she will tell you they are going to 'keep an eye on it'.
She especially loves to tell you about how they're 'keeping an eye on dd' as she's apparently very underweight. Well its quite blatant to anyone with more than 1 eye, she's a perfectly average sized young girl.
It's very sad really.

apostrophethesnowman · 19/12/2012 22:07

YANBU at all.

If someone had a real flu they wouldn't be well enough to go online never mind go to work, shopping etc. It's the same with migraines.

A common cold can be treated with fluids and paracetamol if necessary. Or just keep it until it gets better!

AuntieMaggie · 19/12/2012 22:18

YANBU

I am however grumpy about people who do the whole tell everyone that will listen how bad things are for them/how ill they are thing very loudly at every opportunity... no I don't know anyone like that in my office...

HollyBerryBush · 19/12/2012 22:18

Can I add, pergnancy is a natural bodily function, much like breathing or having a shit. It isn't an illness in its self.

rant over

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 19/12/2012 22:28
Hmm As someone with health anxiety, as well as actual diagnosed physical problems, I'd just like to say you may not BU, but in expressing that people with what is an actual mental health problem annoy you, you dont half sound like a cunt.
BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 19/12/2012 22:30

Fwiw though, I never tell people I have 'flu :)

MrsFlibble · 19/12/2012 22:39

YANBU. i dont go to the GP unless i can barely drive to get there, my GP surgery had a drop in clinic, when they did it, it was filled with people half hour before it started.

And no good Dr would prescribe anti biotics for a cough, they are only for fighting infections. not viral problems.

twilight81 · 19/12/2012 22:40

Can I add that actually pregnancy can very much be like an illness hollyberrybush. There is nothing natural about being so sick and ill for weeks on end that you can barely move out of bed to care for yourself and other children.

upstart68 · 19/12/2012 22:42

I have a friend who has "flu" a few times a year. Never a common or garden cold.

MrsFlibble · 19/12/2012 22:43

Twilight I agree, i had a headache everyday for 4 months while pregnant, and my back was shot and i had swollen up everywhere, some women have terrible pregnancies.
