Having a chat with my sister earlier about her works do that I am invited to. It is James Bond themed and she said we should drink martinis when we are getting ready.

She has never had one and when I told that it was basically gin with a teeny bit of vermouth in it, she was appalled. They are gopping! Vodka martinis are barely any better.

Does anyone actually like them?

Dear God, I bloody love martinis. Love gin. Love vermouth. Love olives. What's NOT to love?!

And the cucumber martini at The Sanderson is truely a work of art in a glass.

catgirl1976geesealaying · 05/12/2012 22:35

I like vodka ones

To a point.

InExitCelsisDeo · 05/12/2012 22:35

Yep

EspressoMartiniToGo · 05/12/2012 22:35

Espresso martini - tis the only acceptable version :)

makinglemonade · 05/12/2012 22:36

I don't like gin.

Porn Star Martinis are gorgeous (slug & lettuce recipe)
Vanilla Vodka with passion fruit purée and a shot of cava! Strangley lovely but I'm not very classy

BendyBobsBrusselsSprouts · 05/12/2012 22:36

Oooh yes I love them.

SPsFanjoIsSantasLittleHoHoHo · 05/12/2012 22:37

I love them. When I was younger me and a friend would mix beer, martini and vodka together. How my liver survived I do not know

NirvanaSmellsLikeTeenMother · 05/12/2012 22:37

Martinis are bloody gross!

Cosmos on the other hand are lovely... Not very James bond though!

Icelollycraving · 05/12/2012 22:38

I love them! My favourites are a dirty martini or watermelon. Beautiful!

BunnyLebowski · 05/12/2012 22:38

My favourite drink in the entire world!!

So dry there's barely any vermouth (As Noel Coward said "Just pour a glass of gin and wave it in the general direction of Italy" Grin)

2 x olives, a tiny bit dirty.

I am on first name terms with the 3 bartenders I've found here in Leeds who can make one properly!

Mmmmmm!

SrirachaGirl · 05/12/2012 22:38

YANBU. They are gross but look cool. I do like to swipe DH's martini olives though.

ZebraInHiding · 05/12/2012 22:38

I like them. :)

ohfunnyface · 05/12/2012 22:39

Cucumber, lychee, peach, French...all delicious martinis!

squeakytoy · 05/12/2012 22:39

chocolate martinis are lush

SrirachaGirl · 05/12/2012 22:39

What's the dirty bit?

BunnyLebowski · 05/12/2012 22:39

Don't get me started on twatty fruity ones and espresso ones. Insulting to the art of the drink.

Even vodka is an abomination.

A classy drink for a sophisticated palate. Not brightly coloured alcopop in a martini glass Hmm

BunnyLebowski · 05/12/2012 22:40

Dirty = adding a bit of the brine from the olive jar.

Yum!

freddiefrog · 05/12/2012 22:43

YANBU

I hate gin

BeckAndCall · 05/12/2012 22:43

Lol at the Noel Coward quote, Bunny.

Winston Chruchill used to say he liked his martini so dry you'd just show it the vermouth from across the room......

Bogeyface · 05/12/2012 22:44

I stand corrected!

I love a nice G&T, but cant stand "raw" gin.

And I totally agree with Bunny that anything that isnt gin and vermouth isnt a martini, but vodka martinis I will just about put up with! But......if the gin has barely any V in it, then how can you tell? why not just drink gin with an olive in it?

Cosmopolitans are lovely, I will get her onto those instead!

bunny is my concoction acceptable? Grin

I was in the US for business once, and company I was visiting took me to a martini bar (I love martinis BTW). It was an awesome experience - took some time to order each drink as the waitress went through the questions:

  1. Gin or vodka?
  2. Which type of gin (she ran through a list of about 8 gins)
  3. What type of olive (NB smoked olives are Not Great in a martini)
  4. Ice
  5. Shaken or stirred (yes really, though she recommended stirring)
  6. Type of glass

It was fabulous, and I only regret the fact that, as it was a business dinner, I could not risk getting shit-faced on these lovely lovely drinks Xmas Grin

Bogeyface · 05/12/2012 22:46

And while I am here, another Q

Is it VERmuth or VerMOOTH?

OP posts:
OscarPistoriusBitontheside · 05/12/2012 22:46

Martini? No. Appletini? Yes please!

I started Drinking them before they were even slightly famous or even heard of over here. Also a sucker for a proper Cosmo.
