Bloody Cake Forks!!!

My husband annouced that he was getting me a present for Christmas, he said it was about £30. I said lovely, if I had a choice could I have some trainers (I only have two pairs of shoes)
Parcel arrived today and, I'm not proud of this, I peaked inside and he has got me a set of cake forks. £95 worth of silver antique cake forks. I could cry.
I am unreasonable to drop lots of hints that I would really love some shoes in the hope that he will return these horrors?

They sound lovely Confused

Unless you're church mouse poor surely you'd rather have something pretty than bloody trainers?

lurkedtoolong · 05/12/2012 16:32

Oh no. I would cry so much. I hate "practical" presents or gifts for the home. Who the hell thinks that cutlery is a suitable Christmas present?

Drop lots and lots of hints.

FireOverBethlehem · 05/12/2012 16:34

do you eat a lot of cake?

Are you sure they're for you and not a maiden aunt?

5dcsandallthelittlesantahats · 05/12/2012 16:34

have you ever expressed an interest in cake forks. I would be very confused if my DH bought me these - I am not really sure what they are.

I would just smile an accept them to avoid hurting dhs feelings but i would be a bit Confused.

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:34

Until recently I was church mouse poor and this is why nearly £100 on something that will sit in a cupboard rankles me.

Dead69Girl · 05/12/2012 16:34

i will have them and you can have my new £65 running shoes, cake is way more fun than running :)

Narked · 05/12/2012 16:34

I think only having two pairs of shoes counts as either being tight for cash or a lack of available shoe shops.

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:35

Do eat a lot of cake but very happy with a teaspoon / shoving it straight into my mouth!

Cake forks?

How did he come up with the idea of cake forks? Confused

More to the point how did he spend £95 on them? Shock

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 05/12/2012 16:37

Isn't cutlery more something for the home than a gift for an individual?

It's not very different from wrapping up an ironing board, now is it?

Narked · 05/12/2012 16:37

I'd buy him an antique, silver shoe horn. So the forks have some company in the cupboard.

HECTheHallsWithRowsAndFolly · 05/12/2012 16:37

Yeah. I like narked's idea.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 05/12/2012 16:37

DH would be speared with said cake forks if that's what he got me for ChristmasGrin

I love baking and eating cake but what the hell is wrong with a normal forkConfused

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:38

And , just remembered we already have cake forks - they were a wedding present!!!

OP posts:
shriekingnora · 05/12/2012 16:40

In that case get the cakes forks out next time you have cake and watch his face fall. They might not be for you though, maybe they're for his parents?

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:40

Glad to hear that my reaction was not that unusual - this is why he's not allowed to buy presents, he normally just gives me the money. (For my 21st he got me a sharp knife, two packets of Boasters and a garlic crusher in a Tesco bag - he has form...)

TeWisBeenNargledByTheMistletoe · 05/12/2012 16:41

No to cake forks!

Over dinner tonight start a conversation about how much you hate non-personal gifts and gifts for the house disguised as gifts for you.

Narked · 05/12/2012 16:42

Are the wedding present ones packed away somewhere? Would it be possible to 'do a clear out' of wherever they are and to comment to him that you rediscovered those cake forks you were given, ha ha, wasn't that a bizarre gift, pretty but nothing you'd ever use?

HairyGrotter · 05/12/2012 16:44

I just had to google cake forks, cake has it's own fork...amazing.

I'd cry, then flog them on eBay

XiaoxiongMerrilyOnHigh · 05/12/2012 16:44

OP, get baking - present him with a slice of cake tonight and a wedding present cake fork and see if the penny drops.

You can make microwave mug chocolate cake in 2 min flat Smile

breatheslowly · 05/12/2012 16:44

And what will he be eating his cake with while you use your cake forks?

LauriesFairyonthetreeeatsCake · 05/12/2012 16:45

I use my cake forks all the time, if dh bought me them I'd be very pleased

I'll give you a tenner for them Grin

TerraNotSoFirma · 05/12/2012 16:45

Or serve some cake and dig out the cake forks you already have, maybe he'll send back the new cake forks.

That is a bit of a shit present really. My DH is mostly shit at presents as well, occasionally will do brilliantly, but mostly shit.(expensive shit at that)

TwasTheDawnDeeforeXmas · 05/12/2012 16:46

Get some cake and eat it enthusiastically whilst exclaiming "God...I just luuuuurve the feel of cake between my fingers.....mmmmm.....let no-one ever take this simple pleasure away from me....mmmmmm....caaaaaaake" or similar. And hope he gets the hint. Xmas Grin

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 05/12/2012 16:47

I was going to say what TeWis said, start a conversation about how such and such has just found out her husband is buying her a hoover for xmas, and how awful it is to give give things for the house as presents, and how thoughtless and impersonal it is Xmas Wink
