Bloody Cake Forks!!!

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:30

My husband annouced that he was getting me a present for Christmas, he said it was about £30. I said lovely, if I had a choice could I have some trainers (I only have two pairs of shoes)
Parcel arrived today and, I'm not proud of this, I peaked inside and he has got me a set of cake forks. £95 worth of silver antique cake forks. I could cry.
I am unreasonable to drop lots of hints that I would really love some shoes in the hope that he will return these horrors?

I'd hide them and pretend they never came.

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:53

I like the idea of hiding them Madame! I'd feel guilty for the company he bought them off though, they'd have to go through loads of hassle to try and claim for them.
I told husband two weeks ago that I wanted to go to a very expensive restaurant for my birthday (next month) and was going to ask for vouchers for it - why oh why didn't he remember this if he wanted to chuck £100 around?

Don't hide them as your DH will probably tell the seller that they didn't arrive and get a refund. I'd look on my DH's email and sort out returning them. Or say to DH "I had a peek at the cake forks you got for your DM, don't you think she has enough cake forks? I think that like us, the one st she has already is ample".

complexnumber · 05/12/2012 16:55

DW suggested she would like some cake forks last year. I searched everywhere for some I thought she would like (we're not in UK). She even told me which shop I would find them in!

I failed miserably.

FunnysInLaJardin · 05/12/2012 16:55

they are very useful for putting out cat food......

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 16:56

You can buy mine if she still wants some! I'll post them abroad!!

I think his heart was probably in the right place Smile but somehow he got diverted away from trainers and found himself enchanted by over priced cutlery.

Agree with those who say use your wedding present forks or "find" them again and exclaim at the fact they never get used...

complexnumber · 05/12/2012 16:58

LOL Bruno. You are too kind!

However, I am focussing on other things to fail at this year.

KvetnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 05/12/2012 17:14

I think we owe it to the next generation of wives and girlfriends to teach our sons how to buy presents.

NolittleBuddahsorTigerMomshere · 05/12/2012 17:21

OP, do you love antiques though? Maybe that's he was thinking? My DPs have a big antique collection, DM would never eat cake with them but would enjoy them as decorative items.

Narked · 05/12/2012 17:26

My DH buys lovely presents Grin

Viviennemary · 05/12/2012 17:27

I wouldn't be pleased with this I'm afraid. But my DH is the worst present buyer ever. So I get my own now. But he usually gets me something small. One year a book of scripts from Father Ted. Xmas Confused

piprabbit · 05/12/2012 17:31

I have cake forks (gift from MiL). I enjoy the idea of having cake forks. They get used about twice a year though, so they really come under the category of unnecessary clutter.

MrsHoarder · 05/12/2012 17:34

I'd be confused as we have a set which are used regularly. Otherwise I'd be delighted (although I'm a bit odd, I'd like soup spoons for Christmas because I like using the right cutlery). I'd be upset if I was bought something that I need and thus would feel no guilt about spending family money on anyway.

DoingItOntheRoofTopWithSanta · 05/12/2012 17:40

I love antiques and do cakey things for a living. i'd be very pleased hint hint weird present if you aren't in to that though!

complexnumber · 05/12/2012 17:42

I don't suppose he thought you were asking for four candles... and then there was some confusion.

scripsi · 05/12/2012 17:52

excellent use of the four candles sketch complexnumber

I'd tell him that you don't want them, straight out. If it's not your kind of thing then it is a thoughtless gift.

My PILs gave me two packs of out of date herbal tea (3 years out of date) and a bar of chocolate for Christmas a few years ago and it's pretty much the same every year: unfortunately I just have to pretend I am grateful before composting the tea. FFS.

Will get blackboard out and start teaching DSs how to buy thoughtful gifts ...

Floggingmolly · 05/12/2012 18:18

All this commotion, and you don't actually know they're for you? Confused

chicane · 05/12/2012 18:21

People eat cake with forks?

TheWave · 05/12/2012 18:27

I love our cake forks, also use them for serving ham etc. I like the modern ones though, not antique.

Brunocat · 05/12/2012 18:32

They are for me - I buy all the presents for everyone else. He never buys anyone a present except me and sometimes something extra for the children. Also he has made the great announcement about buying my present and then these things arrived!

I eat cake with a fork and would love antique forks as a gift. I expect DH will just buy me a kindle fire as he has been telling me how much I want one. I don't and would much prefer your present Brunocat.

SilverBaubles33 · 05/12/2012 20:16

I do too, Sue, I adore cake forks, they make me come over all Lady Mary.

But the Tesco bag with a garlic crusher.

That's a whole different kind of wrong.

From now on, order your own presents and he can sort everyone else's. You can lie about swilling gin sipping lapsang and popping bits of lemon drizzle into your mouth from an antique fork.
