To not understand why someone marks their place.

Ok so I'm being stupid rather than unreasonable but when someone types they're marking their place is it because there is some magic way to get back to that place without having to read the whole thread. Because I can find that magic way.

Apologies in advance for being so dim.

ProcrastinatingPanda · 21/11/2012 22:11

Yeh kind of, in threads I'm on it shows you the replies since you've commented, and if you make your posts show up in a certain colour you can just scroll back until you find that colour and read from there.

ReallyTired · 21/11/2012 22:12

I suppose it bumps the thread and keeps it in the active conversions

marquesas · 21/11/2012 22:12

I don't know why it's done either. Watching the thread and bookmarking is much more efficient than faffing about looking for the colour of your post. Maybe posters just like to join in.

takataka · 21/11/2012 22:14

so it shows up in your 'Im On' list?

Bongaloo · 21/11/2012 22:14

.

Marking my place

squeakytoy · 21/11/2012 22:14

I have no idea either.. it always makes me cringe a bit when I see people do it too.. the bookmark facility is very easy to use.

Anythingforabitofpeace · 21/11/2012 22:16

I get that it shows up on your I'm on page but surely it just shows the there's from the start and you still have to browse through.

Not sure how to make mine a different colour or book mark. Sigh, more time needs to be spent on mumsnet.

OP posts:
icapturethecastle · 21/11/2012 22:20

Maybe they don't have anything to add but want to show they are interested in the thread. I sometimes do it on the telly threads -just like a check in!

Mintyy · 21/11/2012 22:20

I find it quicker to find threads in Threads I'm On, rather than in Threads I'm Watching. Customise so that all your posts are highlighted, then you can scroll back through a thread to find where you last posted really quickly.

marquesas · 21/11/2012 22:20

You turn on the colour and the bookmarking by clicking on "customise" at the left hand side of the talk menu at the top of the page - it will change your MN experience for the better Grin

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 21/11/2012 22:26

If you go to customize at the top if this page you can make your posts and those of the op different from all the others. It's pretty too.

Smile

When you look at the I'm on section, if you click on one of the posters rather than the thread title it will take you to that recent post, then you scroll back to your (now highlighted purple or grey and so easy to find!) last post and read on.

D'ya get meh?

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 21/11/2012 22:28

Grrrrr...... customise not customize

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 21/11/2012 22:28

marking my place tooWink

hugoagogo · 21/11/2012 22:35

I think it's a throwback, it wasn't always so easy to bookmark. or else it took me 2 years to work out how Blush

WorraLiberty · 21/11/2012 22:38

Whenever anyone says they're marking their place...I get a mental image of them pissing on the thread.

MrsHoarder · 21/11/2012 22:45

I don't understand why they don't watch either.

marks place Wink

You can change your colour settings in customise (just above "threads I'm on"

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 21/11/2012 23:00

When you click on bookmark and it changes to saved , what happens next? What do you do with it? Are bookmarks saved somewhere?

BadgersBottom · 21/11/2012 23:06

No kitty - when you return to the thread it goes straight to your bookmarked post.

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 21/11/2012 23:17

Oh right. Thanks badgersbottom! So why do people mark place too then? Oops perhaps I should read the thread again! Blush

Anythingforabitofpeace · 22/11/2012 08:44

Thank everyone. I get it now Grin. But I guess I should try in customise on my laptop as opposed to the mumsnet app that I'm normally use.

OP posts:
BIWI · 22/11/2012 08:47

You can't bookmark unless you're using Mumsnet 'new'.

I wish we could colour code our posts on the app - it's a feature I really love when I'm on the laptop/pc

valiumredhead · 22/11/2012 09:45

For me it just means " I am marking my place to come back to this later and just wanted to let you know I have read your thread but I'm not ready to post a comment yet."

kittyandthegoldenfontanelles · 22/11/2012 15:47

I'm on my phone biwi, don't have a laptop or pc. I can colour code and bookmark though..

BIWI · 22/11/2012 20:29

Oooh! How do you colour code on the phone?
