to be annoyed at the train conductor...

My nearly two year old and I were travelling home on the train from my SILs (visiting new baby).. We stayed longer than intended so he missed his nap and was restless on the train. I had him on my lap, looking at a toddler game which makes a twinkling sound when he touches the screen (along with colours and shapes).. The "conductor" (was the London Overground - it said conductor on his jacket, he seemed to be getting off at each stop and blowing a whistle!) told me to turn the sound off as it was disturbing others in the carriage - I hadnt noticed anyone looking disturbed by it, nor disturbed by a woman who kept shouting down her phone whenever it rang..

I did as I was told - turned the sound off - but my tired and grumpy boy had a meltdown and cried on my lap for the next few stops, and only stopped when I let him get down and wandered the carriage with him..

Surely the twinking mobile noise would have been better than a screaming child?!!!

Yabu, I'd take the screaming baby over irritating repetitive synthesised mobile noises any day. Sorry it upset your son but it is vvu to inflict mobile noises on fellow passengers (same goes for the person bellowing on their phone).

Beeping would send me over the edge - I can't stand it and after a day at work would have been glad for the conductor to say something to you. Take a book and read to him next time maybe?

YABU. Audible noise from computer games on a train is very selfish and inconsiderate to other travellers, be it "twinkling" noise or otherwise.

Just because other people didn't have "disturbed" looks on their faces, doesn't mean they weren't finding it annoying. The phone woman was being inconsiderate too, but two wrongs don't make a right, etc.

Letting him play the game wasn't the only means you had of stopping him from crying, as he stopped when you took him for a wander. So using the game is just you being lazy really, sorry if that sounds harsh.

Can't you find him something visual to do on the iPhone that doesn't need sound f he likes the iPhone so much? My bro has an app where beautiful fire work type patterns explode where you touch and change as you move your inher around or tap harder. No noise needed. Happy baby happy train.

YABU - crying baby I can deal with bleep bleepy bleep bleep would drive me round the twist.

I've been on a couple of train journeys recently with carriages full of raucous and hysterical women on hen parties and the guard/conductor has done nothing, on other journeys with people breaking into song(!) and a whole host of electronic noises, over-loud music etc. In my humble opinion your train conductor was over-reacting.

Twinkling music or screaming baby, either way I'd have hated you.

Mostly electronic 'music' though.

YABU. Nobody else wants to listen to the noise, those games can be pretty annoying! find something to play which doesn't make a noise.

After a few minutes of twinkling I'd have gone to find another seat.

I'd take twinkling (low volume) over screaming child any day. I get enough screaming children at home

I have NEVER seen a conductor on the London Overground, let alone one who cared what the passengers were doing.

Yes, probably was being lazy, but cancer treatment and a toddler does leave you a little tired. Probably the toddler more so than the cancer treatment!!!!

What a bunch of joyless bastards on MN. It's a noisy tube train. Those games are annoying but I'd rather that than a screaming child. Needs must when the devil drives. Get headphones

I'd be happier with a twinkling child than a group of raucous adults any day! The single most irritating thing on any journey is the sound of an adult who likes to let the whole world know everything he/she says.

There are some very miserable people about!!!

I was on the train last Thursday and a family got on with 2 dc including a girl of about 4.She had an interactive toy laptop which made constant repetetive noises.I was in a booked seat on a crowded train but after 30 minutes [when everyone from neighbouring seats had moved] I couldn't stand it.I apologised to the family saying,"Sorry the noise is interacting with my hearing aid[true] but I can see it is keeping her entertained so I will move."
I did.I wish they had switched it off.YABU.

I hate noise on trains. And certainly not bleeping toys. I think the conductor was right to tell you to switch it off. I'm afraid I'd have moved away too.

It was a tube, right? They are so noisy anyway.

My worst in order...

1. "BLART, 6 figures, BLART, investment, BLART, little woman harr harr" on a mobile.
2. Sweary, shouty people.
3. Drunk, borderline violent people.
